The video was a breakthrough, and director Jeff Stein won a lot of awards for it. For voices other than lead singer Ric Ocasek, try "Drive", which was their biggest hit. Ocasek still wrote it, but it's the bassist (Benjamin Orr) who does the singing there.

Second that - Drive is a beautifully written and produced song. The video (starring 80s model Pauline Porizkova who was also singer Ric Ocasek's girlfriend at the time) was equally intriguing - depicting her having a mental breakdown and the fallout from it. Very haunting and certainly one of their finest works.

The Cars were on the bleeding edge of the emerging new wave sound in the late 1970s. Their first two albums (self-titled and "Candy-O") are fire. This album came out circa 1984 and it is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I prefer their earlier stuff, but there are some great songs on this album including this song, and "Magic" (which also has a very creative video). As to ballads, on this album there's a ballad titled "Drive" which is actually pretty dark if you listen closely to the lyrics. But great songs to react to are any on the first two album. From Candy-O, you could do: Candy-O (title track) Let's Go (ultimate party song when I was in high school and this song came out) Double Life Dangerous Type Those are just from the top of my head. The whole album is great.

Nobody thought of songs like this as "stalker" music at the time. Not even "I'll Be Watching You" (which won three Grammys) was seriously thought of as stalker music back then. Nobody believed that stalking was the intent. The ironic thing was Sting, while admitting it sounded like a comforting love song when he wrote it, said that he didn't realize how sinister it sounded until much later. It's just that nobody thought of it that way back then. It seemed romantic. They were playing it at their weddings! It was couples music and nobody from those days will give it up. I love that song and so does almost everyone from those days. It will never be a stalking song to us. It kind of like how the Christmas song "Baby, It's Cold Outside" from the 40s has been considered "rapey" by some people in the 2000s when it isn't in a way a "rape" song. So, with this song by The Cars; it's definitely not a stalking song. It was just music about really liking someone and really wanting to be with them. There is nothing wrong with that. None of it was about being with someone against their will or forcing themselves on someone else. The girl certainly didn't seem "threatened" in any way. Maybe he's persistent and perhaps even annoying like a fly but, that is very different from threatening or stalking. I don't think referring to stalking in reference to these songs is very fair. Many of the rap songs of today talk about women in deliberately very demeaning and vulgar ways.
@rsw12273 жыл бұрын
I agree! I'm pretty sure if our relatives/ancestors weren't a little "rapey" or "stalkers" most of us wouldn't be here. Ha! How many stories do you hear of older people and how they got together? Most of the time your Grampa or Uncle kept "chasing" or "pursuing" and trying to "win their heart." How many times do woman say "you got to make him work for it" or "you have to play hard to get"?

Meaning if our male relatives took "no" for an answer a lot of us wouldn't he here. I meant they were persistent and they courted the women. Not that they clubbed them over the head and dragged them by the hair like a caveman!!! Do you get it now or are you still triggered?!

Yesss as an adult I really hear the stalker vibe of this. As a kid I found it romantic LMAO. But this video was really famous for the animation and effects, very much ahead of its time. Music videos were in its infancy, most videos were experimental as opposed to being really serious. Solo artists as well as groups or bands would make silly, fun videos to show people that they are likeable and in all counts, normal people. "Magic" and "Shake it up" are the embodiment of the 80s sound. Going to the mall and the arcade in the 80s were the places to be. The Cars are my third favorite band after The Beatles and Pink Floyd. Let's Go by The Cars is my favorite song of all time. Thanks for this reaction. Love it. 💘

Yes they have a ballad "Drive". Other quality songs "Since You're Gone", "Good Times Role", "Tonight She Comes", "My Best Friend's Girl", "Let's Go", "I'm Not The One", "Magic", and "Shake It Up".

"GOOD TIMES ROLL", "MAGIC", "MY BEST FRIEND'S GIRL", "LET'S GO", "DRIVE" are some of my favorite's of theirs. Yes, the music video is a whole new medium thanks to MTV - who didn't have enough videos to run the channel 24 hrs. early on, so a lot of bad videos were hastily made, and bad bands got some air time, and for a while a handful of music videos seemed to air almost constantly, but it was a remarkable time. Tom Petty put out some great videos. In his last interview with Gary Shandling he said when you put music to video, there's a million ways you can go.

I would also add "Just what I needed" to the list...

The cars have tons of song... They had multiple hits off of all their albums. One of my favorites is "Moving In Stereo". It had a bit of a different sound than their other songs... I always felt like it was eerie and spacey with an infectious beat.

The Cars started in the 70s as a New Wave band and then polished their sound to become more mainstream in the 80s (like this one) but they are a band worth diving into. Alot of material and it's all different, quirky with great musicianship and songwriting!

I prefer their earlier stuff from the late 70's. "Just what I needed" (1978) is one of my absolute favourites...

The model in the video was actually the singer's- Ric Ocasek- real life girlfriend. They were just having some fun. These are the Cars songs you have to check out: "Let's Go," "Let the Good Times Roll," "My Best Friend's Girlfriend," "Drive," "Moving in Stereo," "Touch and Go," "Dangerous Type," "Bye Bye Love." Those are just a few from their library. They were a few years ahead of everyone else. They already had an '80's sound in the mid to late 70's. A very unique band that saw me through my teens. We were lucky to have them.

The problem with "Every Breath You Take" is how the music reflects the lyrics--those Andy Summers add9 chords really give the song an ominous edge that helps emphasize that "stalker" feel. This song, on the other hand, is so upbeat and jovial (with a hint of irony) that you don't really feel threatened by the singer in any way.

They were a great band. Last album they did was in 2011 before the lead singer died. Good track off that one was Blue Tip.

Good selection. The group is a definite favorite of mine, another one with strong Boston connections. David Robinson grew up just down the street from me. Eliot Easton is a phenomenal guitarist and Benjamin Or was a 1st class vocalist.

Hell Yea! This video won a lot of MTV awards. This was the era of the video being creative. Videos were designed to outdo each other.

Great reaction guys to a fun band. Quirky is a good word to describe them. A bit of info if you don't now about this video. MTV started a music video awards in 1984. This video from the Cars won the first video the year award. It was one of the first to use computer graphics in its video.

When MTV began in the 80s the best way to get your video played more was to have a unique one. In 1984 "You Might Think" won MTV's first video of the year award.
