Please can you one day breakdown the 2013 finals. A lot of people talk about Tim Duncan not being in the game but I believe the mistake began before that game. Kawhi was on LeBron who didn't score 20 points in the first 3 games. Pops switched it up cos in the regular season Diaw did a great job on LeBron so he implemented it in the playoffs but that was were the mistake began. Only if Pop left Kawhi on LeBron. Spurs go on to win. This is the memory I have, I was young at the time. I've never seen that series since. Could you please breakdown why Spurs lost in 2013. Where did it change truly.

That’s what made the older years of the nba so great. We’re finally seeing some resurgence of different play styles after 5-6 years of every team trying to be the warriors. I still hate the amount of 3’s teams take. When they’re going in for both teams it makes for a great game. But if one or both teams have a bad shooting night it’s just not fun to watch. I also hate how defense has been completely reduced to a degree that it’s almost a joke. Averaging 30 points a game used to be iconic. Now there’s like a dozen player in the league currently averaging over 30. Guys are putting up 40 points nightly. Seeing someone put up 50 isn’t even a massive deal anymore. Some of the stars you can barely touch without them getting free throws. Hell, sometimes they just throw their body into the defender and toss the ball up and THEY get free throws. Not to mention carrying being essentially legal now where you can just put your entire hand under the ball without it getting called. Then you have traveling. That’s gotten to the point of absurdity. Every night I watch players not only take an extra step but you see plays where a star will take 5 steps without a whistle. I understand people like offense but they’ve taken it way over the top IMO

Crazy tidbit about the 96 Bulls - their last three regular season losses were all by one single point (L v. Pacers 100-99, L v. Hornets 98-97, L v. Raptors 109-108). They could have gone 75-7 had those three losses gone the other way!!! (And they never won a game by one point - all 72 wins were by two or more points)

MJ averaged 41 in Finals while Pippen played MVP caliber ball and the Bulls shot 40% Threes for Playoffs (46% in Finals) while Horace Grant kept Barkley at his season averages... fax!!!

The Bulls followed up the 95-96 season by going 69-13 the next year and winning another title. In the 3 seasons of the Bulls 2nd three-peat, they went 203-43 during the regular season and 45-13 in the playoffs for a 248-56 overall record. That is a .815 winning %. I look at kenny Smith speak of there 2 championship seasons and how they would have beaten the bulls. But where were they in 93 or 96. I heard said that if Jordan wouldn't have left to play baseball that he would have lost to them, but I say different. Jordan was was at his prime with the same supporting cast minus Rodman. The only missing component during those years was Jordan, who pushed his team during practices to be ready for any team any time any era.

My pick is the 2001 Lakers. Not only did they go 15-1 in the playoffs, but they did it while obliterating the competition. The Spurs team that they swept in the WCF was ELITE. And they won by an average margin of 23 ppg. Not only that, but statistically they had the 2nd most difficult playoff run in nba history, only after the 1995 Rockets. Question for you. Do you think opponent regular season record an effective way to compare difficult playoff runs across years? I started questioning it when someone said Denver's run this year is historically easy. On paper sure their opponents have poor records, but the LA & Phoenix late trades definitely made those teams more competitive than their record would suggest and Miami is obviously no joke. This year's weird scenarios aside, I wonder if league-wide parity plays too big of a role. If there are a few great teams and a lot of mediocre teams, a good team's record would be inflated compared to a similar team who plays in a league with a lot of solid teams. You'd expect even a historically great team to lose a few regular-season match ups against good teams, and that might not happen if there is less parity. Thoughts?

Nah! You need to take in concideration pace of the game. During Rodman's era pace average was in the 90s pos pg. Chamberlain and Russell's era 125 avrg X 2 teams. There's a difference of 70 more posesions a game in the 60s with less scoring eficiency which equals more rebounds, blocks and more everything. That's why the numbers are so inflated. If you adjust for pace Rodman was a better rebounder than both. Not to mention Wilt's a 7 footer.

That 72-10 win Bulls team had a rebounding, size, tough, perimeter/interior defense, and 3pt shooting roster that no assembled team could touch including the Warriors... Especially considering the Warriors lack size. MJ, Pippen, and Rodman are interchangeable in terms of matchups and could guard multiple guys. The warriors especially Draymond aren't defending a 6'6 MJ who both was the scoring champ and who made 1st Team All-Defense leading the league in stls along with Pippen who as a 16-19ppg scorer made 1st Team All-Defense. And Rodman who was a trb champ on top of also making 1st Team All-Defense. Between the 3 of them alone made 26 1st Team All-Defenses and 27 in total along with 3 DPOY, 7 trb titles and 4stls titles. Individual stars are great things, but when a group of greats play team ball like that, it is a thing of beauty. Even Parrish and McHale were making great passes. Also, what makes Bird's stats more impressive is that he did not play as much because the Celtics destroyed everyone. Bird had big numbers in close games, but when the Celtics controlled a game, Bird was great about getting others involved. A true team player. The most dangerous thing about the 1972 Lakers was the fact they had three guys who could go off for 40 points per night if they wanted to. Also Wilt Chamberlain on that team, there are videos of him blocking double-digit shots in games in the playoffs. The 2001 Los Angeles Lakers were the best team I ever saw personally play. If the question which team was functionally the best at playing basketball its the 16-17 Warriors. The team that went 73-9, that then came back from down 3-1 to the pinnacle verison of the KD and Russ OKC teams, then took a 3-1 lead on a legit Cavs superteam with prime Bron & Kyrie and Love and a ton of great complimentary pieces in JR, Tristan, Shump, Mo, old RJ. LeBron and Ky went supernova and got a bit lucky. Your taking that exact same dominate team and swapping Barnes out for KD, who is a 10x better player across the board. Steph, KD and Klay giving 85 points by themselves, Draymond the perfect defensive / playmaking swiss army knife, him Looney and Paculia doing the dirty work setting borderline illegal screens. Iggy, Livingston playing great defense and running the offense, Clark getting his shots up when he can, and even David West is sitting on the bench if they need more screens or someone to run a post up. KD, Iggy, Klay and even Livingston were all dogs defensively that had the length, IQ to hound the other teams guards/wings and cover up for Steph on D, Steph and KD P&R or pops alone were enough to scorch every team im history, let alone Klay,Iggy and Dray had enough shooting, play making and shotcreation to run their own seperate offense, they would bomb every team in history away, best bet is 96' Bulls, they can actually sorta match up GSW17 on D, but they wouldn't be able to keep scoring at the rate GS would with the 3s and having 3 stars who can score at will, Bulls only really 2, then you got Dray and Iggy, who can both always get it to whoever is open. Pippen would probably be to dead from chasing all of GS wings, Rodman cant score so your banking on Jordan to outscore 3 guys, 3 guys who have more and better depth. Even tho Jordans is still the GOAT, GSW would be too much of an onslaught, 5 maybe 6 game series Jordan herro balls himself 1 maybe 2 games.

No other team made the league as unfair as 2017 Warriors. Honestly 2017 Cavs might be one of the best teams to not win a ring and they almost got swept. This team looked like they never played with 100% effort, yet noone ever looked close. They were so good they basically destroyed the sport. No other team can say that.

all great teams for sure. In regards to which team would win and come out on top I think that it all depends on which teams can minimize the others style of play and strength. As an example that Spurs team with Parker Timmy D etc the 2001 Lakers with Shaq and Kobe would win. Shaq would dominate this version of Tim and their D as he did against Prime Tim along with young Tim and David Robinson. He would steam roll them add in the perimeter defenders they had to take away the 3 along with Kobe and to me its a wrap. The Warriors team would also beat that version of the Spurs with Steph Klay and KD sure you put Kawhii on KD ok you still got Prime steph Prime Klay to worry about and you arent going to get abusded in the paint as zaza and Dray would hold up as Tim was no longer at a point to take 20-25 shots a game and this team wasn't a huge beat you off the dribble team. I take the Warriors over almost any of these teams and the shaq Lakers over almost any of these teams. The 1 wildcard to me is the Jordan bulls. MJ can not be stopped and both him pippen and Harper make an almost impenetrable wing defense teams for guards tho Shaq would just eat them alive in the paint.

Read Rodmans book. Its a trip. The guy didnt even play basketball in highschool. Just started playing at his community college at like age 20. He made friends with this guy and he was like adopted by his Midwest white farm family. He talks about how decided to score more one year so he scored 14 ppg one year for the Pistons and even shot three pretty well. Then kind of decided scoring bored him. "Im going to be weird and dye my hair like Wesley Snipes in Demolition Man now." His battles with Pop. His Bulls years. Hes an "interesting" guy.

Of all the great teams in NBA history, there are really only 2 I can think of where the whole season felt like a foregone conclusion: the 96 Bulls and the 17 Warriors. I think the greatest of all time is one of them, but I'm not sure which. Gun to my head I guess I take the Bulls, but the Warriors felt even more inevitable at the time. Everyone knew they were already the best team in the league, and then they added Durant, whereas the Bulls were coming off Jordan's baseball years and it wasn't completely clear if they were still the killers they were before.

I wasn't old enough to watch the 86 Celtics but my dad calls it a foregone conclusion, after losing the Finals the previous year they went 40-1 at home...no one was beating those 5 HOF'ers and that front court in a 7 game series that season. Same goes for the 40-1 Spurs in 14, their ball movement was above the rest and great defense to boot, they felt different. Also, there was huge hype for the 96 Bulls. MJ's full season back with a chip on his shoulder plus they acquired one of the best defenders/rebounders ever, Rodman. The Bulls defense was insane, plus Kukoc was 6th Man of The Year. They were rockstars everywhere they went. The year prior without Rodman plus MJ getting back in shape at the tail end of the season they pushed the red-hot Finals-bound Magic 6 games. In 96 as the season rolled on, it was apparent the Bulls were frighteningly great.

How old are you? Do you even understand that in the early 80s there were 3 superteams by today standards and the packed with 3 all stars Backs trying to eat each other playing incredibly fast and hard defense full of 50 top players and other all stars..Lakers had Kareem Magic Mcadoo Wilkes Nixon..Celticks Bird ,Mchale,Parish,Cornbread,Johnson,Tiny..Sixers had Dr J,Toney,Cheeks,Bobby Jones and Moses..they would eat these warriors babies alive..

@@andreaspapadakis2602 Ah, the classic old head. "They were so much better back in the day, young 'un! You don't even understand!" The further back you go the more concentrated the talent gets. The further forward you go the more talent there is overall. That's how it's always been. There's more talent today because basketball is bigger than ever. The parity is also better because even mediocre players are incredible now, and there are more teams in the league competing for their services. And so we compare within eras and attempt to extrapolate. And within their eras the Bulls and Warriors dominated the league like no one else. I'm a Laker fan from the 80's, so yeah, I grew up watching the Lakers and Celtics. The 76ers were incredible for 1 or 2 years as well, as were the Spurs in the 2000's. Those teams were fantastic but they didn't overshadow the whole league like the Bulls and Warriors did. So to me it's one of those teams.

@@jgray2718 have you ever heard and considered the term relativity and variablles..if you have then you surely know that it is impossible to compare different eras without placing all the relative variables into scope, which is a task that needs a lot of unbiased analysis and not some echochamber soup of arguments like the oldhead or wishfull thinking..its absolutely indifferent wheather x or z dominated their relative competition on face value period and some opinion about something..2004 nba forced a major rules change with very given results due to the rules. Exactly like an economic outcome due to given economic policy..that hard fact alone is making the post 2004 era statistically uncomparable with the pre 2004 era..in the 60s the game had a lot more fg attemts than later on with low fg percent..that created significantly more rebound opportunities so rebounders in the 60s look like superhumans compared with the other eras etc etc etc..do you know that against popular beliefs all jumping world records(high, long, triple) stand for decades for example and how does that relates to the myth of the Nba most athletic era and the plummers echochamber?

It's impossible to say which team would win, especially with the difference in rules, playing style, and level of competition in the various eras. I believe several of these teams would do well in any era if given a regular season to adjust, such as the 2014 Spurs. Also, every team on this list would likely have a problem matching up with a least one other team on this list.
@walterrussell6584

Its not impossible at all because the 96 Bulls who stilled played in a tougher era would be an even better team in the modern era based on their size and the way they played. Spurs and Lakers would have played well in the old days but not as well as the Bulls would in todays game and I dont believe the other modern teams would have stood a chance in the 80’s or 90’s.

I agree completely with the matchups point, and it makes for some interesting thought experiments. For example, take the '17 Warriors vs the '01 Lakers vs the '96 Bulls. The Warriors match up nicely against the Bulls with their strong shooting and ball movement that doesn't rely on the low post, but they have no answer for Shaq on the Lakers. The Bulls have better answers for Shaq, though, and the Lakers would struggle to deal with Jordan and Pippen.

Rodman's role was also to screen for Jordan with Luc Longley - Luc was expert at this. Those screens with offencive rebounds where Rodman was number 1 was the reason Jordan had so many middle range shots. In fact Rodman is number 2 behind only Moses Malone with near identical numbers for offence rebounds per game and the third one is not even close.
