Every spring more than 70 countries around the world turn their clocks an hour ahead for daylight-saving time. If billions of people are literally shifting time twice a year, there must be a pretty good reason why we're doing it, right? Not necessarily.

We have DST in America because planet Earth has seasons in the North/South pole. The Equator doesn’t have seasons, which is why they don’t have DST. Earth is at a tilt, which is why days get shorter in the Winter, and which is why they move the clock to accomodate for less sunshine. It get’s worse if you live up north, you’ll see the sun less too. Go back to 6th grade, this is basic knowledge, smh.

DST was certainly designed by politicians, economists, and businesses-or simply people and organizations with little understanding of (or interest in) science. It is unfortunate how much power these individuals with little understanding (or interest) in nature have been provided in this democratic system. It shows that the majority of people electing politicians do not care (or understand) themselves physiologically and/or their environment.

They make the day shorter by running the clock up an hour earlier. We automatically get and extra hour sunlight in the summer because the sun stays out longer during the summer. During the day around 9:00am they don't really pay that much attention to the hour, because after you get up you body automatically adjusts. So they don't make that extra buck as they think. . 😊

Unfortunately, the talk now is about keeping DST permanently. The closer you get to the equator, the less impact this tends to have when it comes to sunrises and sunsets. However, the farther north you get, it becomes more problematic. With those long winter nights with a much later sunrise means that much of what people are doing at the beginning of the day (waking up, getting the kids ready for school, etc) happens in the dark anyway but it just means that condition will go on for an extra hour in the morning every day. If by some chance your kids walk to school, how happy are you going to be if they hare having to do that in the pitch black for longer periods of time in the winter? We typically switch the clocks in March because it is about that time that the days are starting to get longer but it can still be pretty dim at the beginning of that cycle. Making DST permanent means that issue is going to be more pervasive for longer amounts of time.. I expect to see more accidents with pedestrians going forward as when this gets implemented you are going to have a lot more morning activity happening in the black. It seems like a lot pf people have issues with shifting clocks. I expect that a lot of people are going to have issues with the lack of a shift as well.

There's more light to enjoy in the evening because the Sun sets later. Iit actually lowers overall traffic accidents over time (not the the immediate day after sure) because more people are driving between 5pm-7pm which is given more light then between 5am-7am when we impose extra darkness. It is shown to lower the crime rate in that same 5-7pm window, whereas there is nearly zero crime rate to benefit from it being darker between 5am-7am.

Exactly! Let’s get rid of Daylight Savings Time USA. I know for adults we all work year round except for school employees and during summer kids are not out of school so they do have time to play sports or do other outdoor activities, but for people who have bonfires a lot during spring-fall early darkness is not a bad idea. Disadvantageous for Permanent DST: during winter months the sun won’t rise til 8:00am in the morning this means kids will be watching for the bus in the dark and especially during winter months when it gets icy out everyone who makes their morning commute to work will be out on those roads while it would be a great idea to play outside in the afternoon, but later sunset with permanent DST means we’ll be turning on our outdoor Christmas lights later instead of earlier. Permanent Standard Time is a go to so we can have light on the way to work, during summer kids and school employees will still be able to have daylight to play outside until the street lights come on and during winter it will still be able to get dark early enough for us to turn on our outdoor Christmas lights displays. Let’s get rid of DST all together U.S. pick a time and not have to change our clocks twice a year. If you don't want to change your clock twice a year (once forward, once backwards) than your state has a legal option ... observe permanent standard time... you know the one called standard because it's the standard ... that's what Arizona and Hawaii do, they never change their clocks. Summer months: 5:58 AM Wednesday, June 21, 2023 (EDT) 9:16 PM Wednesday, June 21, 2023 (EDT) If standard time was permanent: (which is what most people would rather have) 4:58 AM Wednesday, June 21, 2023 (EDT) 8:16 PM Wednesday, June 21, 2023 (EDT) I don't know about the evenings, but 4:58 is too early for sunrise, imo. Wtaf no if there’s no daylight shifting time, it will get light out even earlier in the summer than it already does. If you live in NY for example, it will get light out at 3:50 instead of 4:50. What we ACTUALLY need is AN EXTRA HOUR of daylight savings for a SMALLER PART OF THE YEAR. So, on April 12-18 (or possibly 5-11) depending on which one is a Sunday, there would be another clock shift forwards at least further North in the USA because the sunrise gets close to going below 6:00 again, and then it would shift back on August 30-September 5 when it goes above 7:00 by somewhat amount. Also, you can do stuff in the dark anyways, so having more daylight later into the afternoon doesn’t just make you go out more, plus it’s still fine if the sunrises slightly after 7:00, and also if it rises too early, such as before 6:00, that’s an unreasonable sunrise time the other way around because it’s too early. On top of all that, we are on daylight savings time more than half the year, so that is technically the standard time, and the so called “standard time”, the behind time, is the daylight wasting time. Sure, we love the extra hour of sleep, but it comes at the cost of losing it an hour of sleep in the spring! When we give up getting that extra hour of sleep in the fall, we also no longer have to lose an hour of sleep in the spring! Plus, we get more sensical daylight times, with later evening daylight times! Sure, who wouldn’t fear sending their children to school in the dark in winter? Spoiler alert, that is already the norm in Idaho for the Mountain Time Zone portion, the Mountain Time Zone portion of Oregon, the Central Time Zone portion of North Dakota and South Dakota in the western region of that time zone, the Eastern Time Zone portion of Indiana and Michigan! They can tell you all about it! Don’t forget Alaska, that is the norm for much of the year! Alaska gets the most extreme of both worlds, the shortest days, and the longest days! Speaking of permanent daylight savings time, I do think it makes sense to give a bit more discretion to those living in the far west region of the time zone. Like one example, a city in western Oklahoma, where during standard time, its latest sunrise is at 8:04 AM, and its earliest sunset is at 5:34 PM. In permanent daylight savings time, their earliest sunset would be at 6:34 PM, but their latest sunrise would take a huge bite out of the morning and plunge a significant portion of the morning into darkness for the latitude, making latest sunrise to be at 9:04 AM! And its average sunrise time would be at 7:45 AM, compared to that of San Francisco being at 7:10 AM on permanent daylight savings time! And going back to the concern of sending kids to school in the dark in winter, another possible solution that can least disappoint those who want permanent standard time and those who want permanent daylight savings time (in regions of the time zone that is not far west in its time zone) would be by putting it halfway in between. One example for San Francisco, daylight times looks like this on permanent daylight savings time: Summer extremes: Sunrise: 5:47 AM Sunset: 8:36 PM Winter extremes: Sunrise: 8:26 AM Sunset 5:50 PM November 1: Sunrise: 7:36 AM Sunset: 6:11 PM Daylight times look like this in San Francisco on permanent standard time: Summer extremes: Sunrise: 4:47 AM Sunset: 7:36 PM Winter extremes: Sunrise: 7:26 AM Sunset: 4:50 PM November 1: Sunrise: 6:36 AM Sunset: 5:11 PM Daylight times look like this in San Francisco in permanent halfway in between time zone: Summer extremes: Sunrise: 5:17 AM Sunset: 8:06 PM Winter extremes: Sunrise: 7:56 AM Sunset: 5:20 PM November 1: Sunrise: 7:06 AM Sunset: 5:41 PM Another example for Seattle, Washington, daylight times looks like this on permanent daylight savings time: Summer extremes: Sunrise: 5:11 AM Sunset: 9:11 PM Winter extremes: Sunrise: 8:58 AM Sunset: 5:17 PM Daylight times look like this in Seattle on permanent standard time: Summer extremes: Sunrise: 4:11 AM Sunset: 8:11 PM Winter extremes: Sunrise: 7:58 AM Sunset: 4:17 PM Daylight times look like this in Seattle in permanent halfway in between time zone: Summer extremes: Sunrise: 4:41 AM Sunset: 8:41 PM Winter extremes: Sunrise: 8:28 AM Sunset: 4:47 PM

Why not permanent daylight savings time? Did you know that in San Francisco, with permanent standard time, latest sunset would be at 7:36 PM instead of 8:36 PM? Don’t we love the late evening daylight? I sure do! Not only would we give that up, we would make the daylight to start ridiculously early in the summer! In San Francisco, its earliest sunrise would be at 4:47 AM instead of 5:47 AM on permanent standard time! And one thing also is that there is a spike of evening car accidents in the first night back on standard time when clocks go back by an hour! And in the day before clocks go back, if it goes back on November 1st, the sunrise time in San Francisco is at 7:35 AM, and the sunset time is at 6:12 PM. Pretty reasonable. The next day sunrise is at 6:36 AM and the sunset is at 5:11 PM! Why do they need daylight to start at early 6 AM only for it to end shortly after 5:30 PM!?! That is literally wasting daylight time! Sure, there is one drawback in permanent daylight savings time too, if that was adopted too, like San Francisco’s latest sunrise would be at 8:26 AM instead of 7:26 AM (latest sunrise during standard time), but its earliest sunset would be at 5:50 PM instead of 4:50 PM! That feels pretty nice! Don’t you agree? And what purpose does sunrise before 7 AM really serve? Sure, we love early sunrise, but I like it accompanied by late sunset time too! Why should we have it to get dark at 8 PM in Central California in the summer instead of 9 PM only for the daylight to start at 4 AM instead of 5 AM? That would be disrupting your sleep! Daylight time starting at 4 AM sounds beautiful, only if the daylight time ends even later like 10 PM, and that belongs to higher latitudes like Washington and British Columbia and Alberta! And the daylight times don’t only depend by latitude, but also by longitude of the position in the time zone! In the northernmost point in the far east edge of California, in the city nearby it, the earliest sunrise in the summer is at 5:25 AM, and its latest sunset is at 7:57 PM. The latest sunset sounds fine still. But when it is on “standard time” in the winter, its latest sunrise is at 6:47 AM, and its earliest sunset is at 4:27 PM! That is crazy early of a sunset time for that latitude! There are many regions in the far eastern edge of California that wants to be put on the Mountain Time Zone due to their crazy early winter sunset! And in the first day on standard time in that city, when it is on November 1, it’s sunrise is at 5:59 AM, but it’s sunset is at 4:46 PM! Just picture that, daytime starting at 5:30 AM, just to see it end shortly after 5 PM! That is pure nonsense! Another thing that would be purse nonsense for that city, is that with permanent standard time, their latest sunset time would be 6:57 PM instead of 7:57 PM, and their earliest sunrise time would be at 4:25 AM instead of 5:25 AM! So in that place, the daylight already starts at late 4 AM in the summer in the days of earliest sunrise under daylight savings time! I think that might sound early, but it’s reasonable if it is on the far east region of the time zone. What would not be reasonable is if it became late 3 AM just simply because those areas had to be put on permanent standard time as well! Like, everyone is sleeping at that time, it’s not time to get up yet! Most people there would likely love to make daylight savings time permanent rather than making standard time permanent! Just think about it!

"reasonable" sunset? What the hell does that mean... That's completely subjective. If you ask me, the sun setting before 5 without DST in the wintertime is not a reasonable sunset
@jasons5916

They picked 5pm because that provided them with 2 charts that wouldn't change much if the time was ST or DT. The sun almost always sets after 5pm except for a few weeks during winter and at high latitudes. They should have picked the average sunset time over the year to be more objective and reasonable.

All for ending time changes but at the darkest time of year have more light is far more necessary psychologically than sunrise which few people are awake or have time to observe. I still don't understand why people hate DST so much and why it causes sleep problems for many. I usually go to bed about 10:30pm. Even though I have blinds and dark curtains in my bedroom, daylight still seeps in and wakes me up. If we stay on standard time, daylight will be waking me up at 4:30am in late spring / early summer. But DST gives me another hour of sleep in dark at that time of year. So isn't 7 hours of sleep with DST better than 6 hours of sleep with standard time? Am I missing something? Maybe I am just different from most people.
