I'll never forget going to Sandy's Records in Dee Why in 1982 to buy the latest indie records that I'd heard on Radio JJJ FM. I said hello to Nigel and Jenny, then went to the 7" vinyl section and flicked through the records when I came across a copy of "But Jacques, the Fish?" I grabbed it with the excitement of youth. Nigel gave me his usual 'background' story about the artist I was purchasing. At the time I didn't know I was buying an important piece of history. One of my treasured vinyl Singles is "Sometimes" "Sometimes when I get home I just wanna go out again" One of my favourite gigs was at Bryant's Manly Vale in 1983 where I saw The Scientists and The Celibate Rifles. I always got a laugh when Couvret wore his Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles footy jumper on stage. Another great memory is seeing The Rifles at The Strawberry Hills Hotel, SurryHills back in the hazy 80's when Damo told the crowd they were going to attempt a new song. Damo then proceeded to read the lyrics from a sheet of paper. Damo asked the people in the crowd "how do you like it up the back?" "There's a lot of people in Sydney that like it up the back!!" We loved Damo for many reasons and his dry humour and high level of applied intelligence were just two of them. Oh and he wasn't a bad frontman for a great Rock Band either. Remembered forever, the great Damien Lovelock.

Half-finished houses, the smell of new paling fences, when you turned on the garden hose in summer the water mixed with the sawdust from the tradesmen to create a sort of milk which soaked further into the ground. Music floated in the hot air but it was not the Rifles out there or in the housing commission areas then. That came later when JJ became triple J and young Australians around Sydney and wherever the signal reached slowly became aware of new possibilities. We could reach out and embrace a new kind of music and something which fitted with our Weltanschauungen. JJJ seems so different now, after all those years of hope.

Good work tumbleweed giving credit to the rifles. I remember a time in the 90s bands like rifles were considered uncool as the influx of trendy bands took over- stuff like nine inch nails, faith no more. But I kept wearing my cellies shirts back in the day and was proud to vocally support them

I practice the art of listening, film clips are not audio, film clips are visual, I really like the aussie relaxing straight-up punk style, fucking awsome!

One of my all time favorite shows was a Tuesday’s lunchtime ‘Rock Against Work’ show by the Rifles at the Hopetoun Hotel, 83 ? That was epic. RIP Damien.

God this is cool. Thanks very much for posting. It's a pity The Rifles are so criminally unknown in the States. Rock on guys.. Kent, you're my guitar HERO!
