The religion of the abyss is probably pretty integral to the story, the idea that souls churn in the abyss. The final layer is called the eternal maelstrom, my guess is that it is a confluence of souls, probably a product of an ancient artifact. Likewise the time dialation effect is probably the work of, or byproduct of such an artifact (we know of the unheard bell which stops time) Artifacts are attuned to souls, and some can only be used by "processed" or specially prepared souls, but that's a season 2 spoiler so I won't be getting into that. But the idea of the movement and use of souls shed some light on some mysteries. (Some light season 2 spoilers ahead for the purpose of theorycrafting) For one, we know that Riko had a dog named Reg, we also learn that Reg were called Reg, even before meeting Riko. We also see that Reg's mentor appear to be Lyza. knowing that souls can inhabit artifacts, and that they are probably being gathered and recycled through the abyss it is very likely that Lyza put the soul of her dog into an aubade, which might be a soul recepticle. Producing the being we know as Reg. It explains his loyalty for Riko, and why he sought her out in the first place. It also explains his smell fetish, fondness for fluffy things and unwavering loyalty and generally nice disposition. Riko is a whole other kettle of fish. She was stillborn, so in the context of the abyss, the infant which were put into the preserving relic were souless. Yet, when it was, it began crying. My theory is that that relic draws in nacient or nearby souls into empty recepticles that are placed in it. (such as the piece of meat which got animated) This means that the soul inhabiting Riko's body isn't actually Riko, and my theory is that it is actually the soul of her (then) recently departed father. But it could be the soul of another member of Lyza's party we have not yet met, or the soul of some other raider, or even Riko's actual soul which got shunted back into her body, or perhaps even multiple souls if Riko's soul had not yet fully left her body, producing coumpounded soul. (this could explain why Riko is so knowledgable about the abyss or quick to learn in general) When we see Riko recounting her experience on death's door, she explains the process in which her being is being processed into a soul. She describes it as being compressed into something else, where she loses her sense of self, or her souls attachment to its body. If Riko is a amalgam of more than one soul (as commented on by a certain character from season 2, as her soul is unusual) then it is even possible that Mitty moved into Riko's body and became one with her. But that's really speculative. One hint that it might be the case, is the immediate attraction Riko had to Nanachi, which could be put in to show that a part of her felt kinship with Nanachi. On the nature of the abyss itself, I have two theories. One is that at the bottom of the abyss there exists an artifact, or number of artifacts being powered by the presence of myriad of souls being attracted to it. One of, or the chief artifact produces the time dialation effect which increases in intensity the closer you are to it. Essentially stopping time around it, but growing weaker the further away you are from it. Moving with its current, you feel no effect, but going against it you are hit with, essentially rapid evolutionary mutations. Your body is rapidly trying to mutate randomly to adapt to the time dialation effect. In most cases the mutations are detrimental, as most mutations are, causing you to melt into a blob and die. What happened with nanachi is that the positive mutations occured exclusively, whereas the negative ones were shunted into Mitty. Now Nanachi is a being that is adapted to life in the abyss, whereas Mitty rolled 0 on the luck die and got a double dose of unlucky mutations, causing her to be unable to even return to the cycle. The other theory I have is that the forcefield isn't actually time based, but an effect of the myriad of souls slowly, ever so slowly being drawn into the bottom of the eternal maelstrom. The closer to the bottom, the thicker the concentration of souls. going against the current causes the souls to stick and seep into your body, causing the effects of ascension. The forcefield is in that sense "living" and perhaps it is why light from above is shone through them, or kept within them which causes the abyss to be lit up. "Reading" the forcefield like the creatures of the abyss or Nanachi can do, might then actually be some sort of communication or understanding of the souls where they can see the movement of creatures as the souls move in anticipation of what is to come. The time dialation can also be somewhat explained as an after effect of the weight of souls layered ontop of those below. unburdened, those above seem to move in fast forward time, but from their perspective, those below move as if slow motion, or even frozen in time.

@@hiphopapotamus7274Nah, they just smelled funny from digging through garbage, which makes the fact that they apparently smell nice… oddly sad? Regardless, Tsukushi (the mangaka) has been pretty firm about not specifying Nanachi's gender, to the point of gently razzing the Japanese fanbase about it.

Yeah, skip the first 2 movies. Dawn of the Deep Soul picks up where S1 ended and S2 will pick up where Dawn of the Deep Soul ends. You might want to reconsider doing a reaction for movie 3. I guess all of your audience would enjoy seeing your reaction to it.
