I saw him in Terre Haute, Indiana when I attended ISU. I remember that Juice Newton was the opening act. I just checked play dates for CD at Terre Haute and I was surprised that it must have been August 31, 1981. I would have only been at ISU for a week or two at that point. I recalled that it was later in the fall. Funny how your memory can play tricks on you like that. I mean, it was only 40 years ago.

Charlie Daniels bought my buddy a beer once. My buddy and his friend went golfing at a local Nashville golf course one Saturday. As they were rounding the 9th hole, my buddy looked over and thought he recognized Charlie Daniels golfing with a young kid, but couldn't really tell. They began to play the next hole and my buddy got a closer look and it was Charlie. Anyway, my buddy and his friend finish up their round and go into the club house and have a few beers. Well, in walks Charlie and his grandson 20 minutes later. My buddy casually asks Charlie how his round went and they strike a up short convo about golf. No autographs were exchanged as that sort of thing is frowned on here in Nashville when celebrities are out doing normal people stuff. So, Charlie and his grandson go up to the bar and Charlie orders a Coke for his grandson and then points at my buddy and his friend and tells the bartender that those two guys look thirsty and to get them one of whatever they're having. He pays the tab with a $100 bill. says bye to everyone and leaves. My buddy asks the bartender if Charlie paid a $100 for a bar bill of $15 and she says; "Yes, he does that kind of thing all the time." Anyway, my buddy gets to tell people that Charlie Daniels bought him a beer once.

Its a variation of the American Crossroads legend of Robert Johnson an America blues guitarist from the early to mid 20th century. Legend has it that Robert Johnson was a gifted guitarist but unhappy with his own playing thought to make a deal with the devil in exchange for his soul the devil would give him the gift of perfect guitar mastery. So the myth goes that there was this magical crossroads where if you went at a certain time you could meet Satan and make your deal. Many musicians over the years have composed songs about the Crossroads. Starting with Robert himself and the song describes his deal with Satan and how it was such a mistake to do what he had done. Even decades later Eric Clapton covered Johnson song. There was even a decent movie around 1986 with Ralph Macchio(Yes, the Karate Kid) elaborating even more on the Crossroads by including an ending battle with Satan and his henchmen Jack Butler(played by Steve Vai) over the fate of a man who sold his soul many years before. If you get the chance check out the movie, it inspired me to take up the guitar.
@xraysteve
@xraysteve 3 жыл бұрын
I caught the tail end of that movie not long ago. Right before the battle. Ralph had a look on his face similar to the final fight in karate kid. Like, ‘oh shit, I’m fucked’. I’d much rather fight a black belt that battle Steve Vai.

I've heard many country music fans say that the difference between a violin & a fiddle is that a violin has strings, but a fiddle has STRANGS! Mr. Daniels doing a little bit of Southern rapping before the word "rap" was barely known to mainstream media. This is one of those fun upbeat songs that crosses genres that makes everybody clap their hands & tap their feet. :-) Charlie passed away on July 6th 2020 at age 83... RIP

Hey guys, Happy New Year. If ever there was a year for "out with the old and in with the new" this was it. Charlie was a legend. He was an accomplished musician. He played fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin and bass. He primarily played guitar for a number of years. He was working on his ranch back in the early 80s (I believe), digging holes for new fence posts. His shirt sleeve got caught up in the power auger and broke 2 of his fingers and his arm in 3 places. He was out of action for several months. When he was ready to go back to work, he was still having some trouble with the guitar due to his hand, so he started playing more fiddle. The rest as they say is history. He has been a sought after studio musician for many years as well as his performing. He played guitar and bass on a couple of Bob Dylan's albums back in the day and also played on a Leonard Cohen album. Years after that he played fiddle on a Hank Williams Jr. album and several others as well. He is in several Halls of Fame as a musician and as a performer. He sadly passed this past year at 83 years old. There are so many great songs from The Charlie Daniels Band. Some fun and some serious. Some with strong political statements as well. His song "Still in Saigon" is a shout out to all the Vets who suffered PTSD and other problems after their time in Viet Nam and a wakeup call to governments to provide more help for those guys. Hell of a guy and a great entertainer. Stay safe and well. Hope to see one or two of the recommendations I have sent you links to one of these days. I will keep watching either way though.

There's a sequel to this song, called "The Devil Came Back to Georgia". It's set ten years after the events in this song, and the Devil wants a rematch. Johnny Cash is the narrator, Travis Tritt is the Devil and Marty Stuart is Johnny. A session musician named Mark O'Connor joins Charlie, and plays his own fiddle so fast and frantic, it's surprising the fiddle didn't catch on fire.

We weren’t best friends or anything but we hung out and we had fun together anyway she was 19 she married her high school history teacher they were in love during high school, but didn’t do anything because I mean you know! Anyway, when she graduated, he asked her to marry him and this was their wedding song. This was the song they dance to and let me tell you it was fun as shit! I saw Charlie Daniels and Travis Tritt in concert (for my first time) in Oklahoma in December of 2019. Charlie was so dope and could still shred on his fiddle. He expressed his love for the USA, it’s citizens, and especially its men and women in uniform protecting our freedom and there was not one dry eye in the theater. He also saw a young boy in the front row who was dancing to the music and Charlie walked right over to him in the middle of the song and gave his bow to the boy. Pretty awesome souvenir and memory for that youngster. Now that he has suddenly passed I’m deeply saddened but also thankful that I decided to buy that ticket and drive from Texas to Oklahoma to see him perform. As I sat there just a few rows back I was amazed at how spry he was for being in his 80s. It just goes to show you that live is precious, health is paramount, and every day is a gift. RIP Charlie!

In the Charlie Daniels song, The Devil Went Down To Georgia, when he says, Chicken in the bread pan pickin out dough. They used to let chicken's peck out the baked on and burnt bread dough from the pan to make the cleaning easier. Charlie Daniels is very missed. You guys are awesome 👍.

I live down the road from the country music capital of the world Nashville Tennessee. Charlie is a legend. When he died it was one of the saddest days in country music. He was such a good man. He loved his country his bible his fans and his music with a passion. WE MISS HIM SO MUCH !!!

It's not a Violin it's a Fiddle. What's the difference? A Violin is a Fiddle that hasn't had enough beer spilled on it yet.

I saw him at the Santa Clara County Fair - in the summer of 1986. He was white haired by then. We were probably the second or third row of people in front of the stage, but off to the side. Sounded just as good as this recording. My first impression was - wow, he is shredding his bow - hairs were coming loose all over the place. Second - he spits when he sings - a lot. I was glad that I wasn't right in front of him. But, it was a great show! We saw the Gatlin Bros at the same show. A good time was had by all.

Rip Charlie Daniels who we lost July 6, 2020. He was a great entertainer, humanitarian & legend of southern rock music with a little bluegrass thrown in. CDB headlined the 1975 homecoming concert at Tennessee Tech where I attended university.. What a show!! I saw him several times after that. Forr those who might not know, the call outs that he does, chicken in a bread pan picking out dough, etc are old square dance call-outs. Yes, Office Bloke Dave, there is a lot of Scottish and Irish influence in the South, particularly in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. The country square dance is straight up a cousin of the highland fling and the country form of dancing called Buck dancing (and you can look both up on KZbin) is descendant of Irish line or step dancing. Tere must have been a lot of Scots that settled in and around Fairview, Tennessee. I have worked in many states & taught in a dozen schools. I've never worked with as many redheads in one place as there LOL My dad who was a musician for fun, swears that the banjo, an instrument that is used a lot in bluegrass & country music is a string version of the bagpipes and iis tuned exactly like a bagpipe including with a drone string.

I remember it coming out around the late 70's like 78 or 79 I could be wrong. And it wasn't just Irish and fiddles it was all 3 Celts all kind of migrated and stuck together. There's fiddle players with Scott ancestry and Welsh.

Charlie played at my local theater 2 weeks after Itzak Pearlman. All the entertainers autograph the walls going to the dressing rooms. Charlie wrote ,"Itzak Pearlman is one damn fine fiddle player"

Guys! You’ve got to look at Jerry Reed! He played a song called Lord, Mr. Ford. He was also gave an award by Chet Atkins (regarded as the best by many in the industry). The award was basically a recognition of his fantastic abilities on the guitar. He uses a method called the claw. He played backup on Guitar Man for Elvis. No studio musicians were able to reproduce the sounds Jerry could make. And he’s a character!

Most people don’t know he was a Amazing guitar player as well as a fiddle player. The top requested session guitarist in Nashville at one point. The song came out in the late 70s crossing waaaaay over on the pop charts. He also performed it in “Urban Cowboy” movie with John Travolta at the Huge Gilley’s Honkey Tonk.

If some of you like bluegrass, Chris Stapleton used to be in an AMAZING bluegrass band called The Steeldrivers. You should check them out! He's from the hills of Kentucky where many people from Ireland settled many years ago 😊
