I know this is an old comment, but we are currently looking at a 2007 Eddie Bower edition, with 190k miles for $6k. We are in the northeast, so rust is *always* a big deal. But if we can get them in decent shape, undercoating is a blessing. I don’t like newer cars. I like to buy older with cash, then drive them for a decade or more. I would be able to buy this SUV, and keep driving it for another decade.

I bought a 2007 Expedition EL 4x4 with 200,000 miles. It had a perfect CarFax that showed it was serviced every 5,000 miles at the dealership. I drove it for 3 years and gave it to my son with 240,000 miles. It's still going strong. The only issue is both rocker panels rusted out in the Michigan winters.

Mileage: I can get 20 - 22 mpg over the road, if I keep it on cruise control at 70mph. Above, it quickly sinks to 16 when I push it to 80 to 85. Just change the oil every 5000 miles; the 5.4 L engine is prone to oil passage blockage from sludge. Keep the insides clean, use full synthetic and a new oil filter every 5K. It just may last forever.

The Expedition has the rear hatch while the Excursion has swing doors with a hatchback like glass. 7.3 Diesel will get better mpg and is Fords best diesel. Easier to put a lift on the Excursion with the solid axles. Love the rear hatch of the Expedition (glass goes up also). 3v 5.4L like this one has more engine issues compared to the old 2v.

Have 04 Ford Expedition w/5.4 3v still going strong. Has 220k miles w/OG Engine. She’s does tick, but still doing regular Maintenance. Like Scotty said not good fuel mileage, but she does have tons of room. A far as replacing or fixing spark plugs or anything engine bay wise. You’ll have it hard. Theres not a ton of room, but still manageable. I Plan to run this SUV until she’s done. Definitely will install A new engine that’s been updated.

I use a 2010 SSV Expedition at a towing company for a roadside assistance vehicle. It was bought at government auction from a fire department where it accumulated about 75,000 hard miles. Even came with the red lights and emergency stuff on it. Now it runs 12 hour+ shifts in the snow, mud and super cold and hot weather alike. Has about 900 lbs of tools and equipment on it including a 12k lb winch for pulling vehicles out of ditches or off road recoveries, and it's occasionally used for towing trailers as well. It's a beast of a truck. It goes where others can't, and it even has mud tires on it. I'd take driving it over the tow trucks any day, and the tow trucks are almost brand new! Very solid, and dependable vehicle.

Agreed. From what I heard from Volt owners, they just plugged it into a regular 120v socket at home. They said the gas engine would maybe kick in once a week. And long trips were no problem because of the gas engine. GM probably spent a billion dollars on this thing and then dropped it. All the RD costs and manufacturing costs were paid for. Coming from a family Navigator owner (Literally same thing) if you can afford it, I’d recommend getting 2010 or newer. Seems that’s when Ford fixed all of the issues on the Expedition/Navigator. When I think of reliable engines the 5.4 Ford 3 valve V8 isn't one of them.
@Wade-lk4yo

If you change your oil religiously (so the cam phasers don't fail) they are actually really bulletproof. But that's just not something most people are thinking about... Also spark plugs, of course.
@Mach141
@Mach141 4 жыл бұрын
Wow, didn't Ford have one of their biggest set backs ever with the 5.4 3V motors? Infamous for cam phaser and timing chain issues, as well as the spark plugs blowing out of the heads. Come on Scotty, dig deeper. "2009-2010 The 5.4 -liter V8 improved in 2009, fixing the cam phaser issues and all but eliminating the spark plug problems."

5.4L have there faults like any other engines, I don't understand the hate about them... Every engine has problems, even Toyota built cars that has problems, *cough* older generation Prius, Camry and Corolla for a couple years. I have one myself 06 Expedition 185k on the clock... Only major I would say is the flywheel going out a couple times, other than that mines has been dead reliable. You gotta take care of them, that's all. I'm never getting rid of that SUV until it dies, nobody wants that gutless older 4.6 and 5.4. lackluster

Change the transmission fluid every 30k miles, watch out for cam phasers (diesel sounding engine), be prepared for blend door actuators to fail (temp control and buried in the dash), a few other issues. Good luck.

derekisthematrix Thank you very much. Already did some research and find out about the cam phasers and the spark plug issue. Right now I can’t figure out why it only lets me fill it up 3/4 of a tank. After that I have to keep pressing the nozzle little by little if I want to fill it up all the way.

My personal reason for not picking up a full EV is not just because i think the lowest range of an EV should be atleast 600 miles (967 km) but if or rather when you get stranded because it probably going to happen to some. You cant just bring a spare jerry can and get up to 100+ miles in an instant but you have to tow the car what ever happens. You cant just bring a small powerplant or new battery if you run out. Living in more open areas and difficult terrain doesnt mix well when you suddenly need a tow to get to an outlet. I like the idea of hybrids more
