Today I spoke with Anthony Dominello, who grew up grew up in a Catholic home and trusted Jesus as his savior at a young age, but ultimately deconverted as he examined the truth claims of the Bible and Christianity.
We touched on many topics, including:
• "Accepting Jesus into his heart" in his teenage years while switching from a Catholic to an evangelical church.
• Facing a great deal of anxiety over science-related topics and stories.
• Getting exposed to Jehovah's Witnesses, Quakers, and even Wiccans/Neo Pagans.
• The importance of being skeptical and carefully examining our beliefs and assumptions, even long after deconverting from Christianity.
• Realizing our tendency to lean toward established narratives -- regardless of whether they are true -- and admitting we all have blind spots in our thinking and research.
• Seeing that we tend not to question the beliefs we were taught as children and thus need to develop critical faculties as adults.
• The importance of practicing radical candor.
• How being on the autism spectrum can affect the way autistic people interpret the Biblical stories and their Christian experience.
• Understanding that the competing narratives of the books in the Bible were written by people who were interpreting the Yahweh character in wildly different ways.
• How the Recovering From Religion organization can support those who are deconstructing their faith.
