The Christian Pastor Who Tried to Kill Adolph Hitler // Travel with Shaun King to Berlin, Germany

Very few people have had as big of an impact on how I see myself, my faith, and my role as a leader in world as Dietrich Bonhoeffer - the German pastor, scholar, and anti-Nazi dissident. As far as giants in modern history go, behind perhaps Malcolm X and Dr. King, the writings and life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer have shaped me immeasurably.
While I was in Berlin, Germany to advocate for Gaza, I had the opportunity to visit the home where Bonhoeffer was literally arrested by Nazis for his plot to kill the genocidal maniac Adolph Hitler. Imprisoned for years, the Nazis eventually executed Bonhoeffer, and his body was never recovered.
Here, I want to take a moment to teach you some of his story, but I also want to ask some very important questions about why this man has been (rightfully) lionized and made into a Christian martyr, almost without question, while other people throughout the world that put their lives on the line in similar ways are demonized and made into monsters.

This conversation and the questions you raise are so pertinent to how we treat each other or think about victims of crimes whether they be someone like Sonya Massey or people in Gaza vs the victims of the past such as the ones who suffered during the holocaust. They are not looked the way they are unless history is forced to look at them differently. Regardless of how many monuments are built to honor the victims or heroes of the past we almost always never seem to run out of enough structures of evil in the world that undermine those monuments and the empty statements printed on them.

Although I may not completely agree with Bonhoeffer's means, I truly respect his passion. Unlike many 20th century theologians, Bonhoeffer was willing to die for his convictions. For him it was more than scholarship and academia, but rather a practical theology - one of life and ultimately death.

My brother Shaun King, in ancient and modern Islamic history, there are many beautiful stories that can be learned from: Such as: 1. the story of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal with Caliph Al-Mu'tasim Billah, who tortured Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal to impose the Mu'tazila doctrine that the Qur'an is a creation and not the word of Allah. The Biography of Imam Ahmad bin Hanble - Darussalam Authors: Salah Ud Din Ali Abdul Maujood 2.The story of Ibn Taymiyyah’s imprisonment in the Citadel Prison in Cairo due to the claims of some Ash’ari scholars against him in proving the attributes of the Creator mentioned in the texts of the Qur’an and Sunnah, but the Ash’ari reject these attributes. Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned the story in Majmo’ al-Fatawa, Volume Three, all of the events, most of which were slanders against him, Ibn Taymiyyah was later imprisoned in the Damascus Citadel until he died because he prohibited Muslims from traveling to migrate to the grave of the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace. Because cemeteries are not sacred in the Muslim faith, we do not migrate to them. Rather, we migrate to the three holy mosques, and upon arriving at the Prophet’s Mosque, we can visit the grave of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. The Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, told us that migration can only be to the Grand Mosque, the Prophet’s Mosque, and Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Citadel Prison is a prison located in the Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi Citadel in Old Cairo. It has been turned into a tourist attraction. It dates back to the era of the Mamluk state, and the most famous person imprisoned there is Imam Ibn Taymiyyah. The books of Imam Ibn Taymiyyah are considered among the most important books of aleaqida Which Muslims must read, including: 1. The Creed of Al-wasitiyyah by Ibn Taymiyyah Sharah al Aqeda al Wasitiyah 2 Volume Set by Shykh Muhammad bin Salih Al Uthaimin 2. Explanation of a Summary of Al Aqeedatul Hamawiyyah: Authored by Ibn Taymiyyah 3. Towards Understanding of Tadmuriyyah by Shaykh-Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah 3. Sheikh Muhammad Abdul Wahhab: One of the greatest innovators of the Islamic nation. He saw the Arabs indulge in polytheism during the time of the Ottoman Empire, which was Sufi. He began calling on the Arabs to return to Islamic monotheism to understand the first generation of Muslims, but he was expelled from the Emirates of Najd and threatened with death, so he resorted to Prince Muhammad bin Saud for his protection and support. In correcting the Islamic religion to what the first generations were, it was the reason for the establishment of the first Saudi state, which was overthrown twice by the Ottoman Sultanate and returned for the third time. We can learn not to surrender, Dawah, and the necessity of correction, because even though Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab was attacked, he did not surrender.(Diriyah is the first capital of the first Saudi state in which Sheikh Muhammad Abdul Wahhab lived, and it is classified as a World Heritage Site in UNESCO) The most important books in understanding the first Saudi state, how it was established, and the ideas of Muhammad Abdul Wahhab are these books: 1. Biography and Mission of Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab by Jalal Abualrub 2. The History of Saudi Arabia Hardcover by Alexei Vassiliev 3. Explanation of the Book of Tawheed by Ibn Uthaymeen or Sheikh Al-Fawzan. (This book is very important in Islamic aleaqida to understand the meaning of Islamic monotheism) This book is also the reason for giving the name Wahhabism because Sufis and Shiites practice polytheistic worship and Salafi Muslims reject these worships because they conflict with the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace. There are other Islamic figures who had a great impact in returning Muslims to the right path After the introduction of some new and modern ideas, heresy, philosophy, heresies and superstitions into the religion, there are those who deviate intellectually and religiously from the understanding of the first generations of Muslims who understood Islam directly from the Prophet Muhammad or his companions or the sons of his companions. Therefore, these three had a great impact in returning Muslims to the correct understanding of Islam and challenged the political systems and deviant religious scholars who were part of the political system and tried to corrupt the Muslim (eaqida)faith. I love the stories of Muslim scholars and Muslim rulers who have a strong and significant positive impact on the Islamic world and establish social justice and goodness for humanity.

As a Stanford student I lived in Berlin in the 1980s and studied the history of Germany. In my family of 4, since the 1970s, there have been 75 arrests for nonviolent direct actions for environmental and social justice, including against the state religion in the USA -- militarism. Before George W. attacked Iraq, after which some 1M to 3M people died due to US militarism in the Middle East, I was arrested, along with my father, trying to stop the invasion and the whole war machine. I'm wondering, Shaun, given your beliefs now about Gaza and war crimes, what you wish you would have been doing about the international crimes committed by the US prior to the current tragedy. Would your resistance have been the same? I hope so. (And as for Israel, since its founding: Hurt people hurt people.)

I would say in many circles Bonhöffer is celebrated in Germany. You can hardly go to town, at least in former W. Germany, where there isn’t at least a street named after him. Not mention the numerous public schools and other institutions.

I had the privilege of going to the EHZ Bibliothek in Stuttgart-Möhringen and reading through many of his meditations and letters he wrote while in prison and it was very moving. He was such a deep thinker yet so humble. The fact that he was killed just days before the end of the war breaks my heart.
