Anyway, long story short, eventually after many adventures treading the jewelled cities of the world beneath my sandalled feet, I managed to usurp the crown of Aquilonia and I wear it upon my troubled brow....

Its very much a Sword-and-Sandals movie, because Scorpion King is one too and both movies have the similar plots using that genre's tropes. You have to see pitch black as the turning point in Riddick life. It's also important to understand why Riddick risks everything to save Kyra. Kyra was the first person he choose to save after the captain saved him. He really only saved the others because he choose to return and save Jack / Kyra. What makes the 3 movies cohesive is that the whole who saves who. Pitch Black Riddick takes on Kyra like a daughter he never could have. Chronicles he has to save the daughter he gave up to keep her safe but looses her. 3rd movie Riddick that father of John's from Putch black travels to seek justice for his only son who Riddick killed. Riddick and the father end up providing each other closure and Riddick is now ready, freed to pursue his homeworld Furya.

I agree. I've rewatched this so many times and always loved it. Such an ENTERTAINING film. I feel like Riddick as a character was still honored in this film, even if the movie surrounding him was just so out there compared to the previous one. It shows there's a lot going on in this universe worth exploring, and even to this day it is still unique and interesting. The first and third movies were better and stuck to the concept more faithfully but I wouldn't say the second movie was bad. It had a lot of flaws but also a lot of fun and charm. Like you said compared to most of what comes out today, this is actually almost necessary to combat the blandness. It is no different from a comic-y style batman or blade film.

@ImperativeGames2 жыл бұрын
Yes. The movie had a few small problems like exploding rocks but nothing that would make it a bad movie. Like, Riddick getting to a "good" planet right before the invasion seems unlikely at first. But then you remember that guy from the first movie sent mercenaries for Riddick exactly *because* he knew about invasion coming. Very logical. And mercenary/bounty hunter catching up with him happened because Riddick used his ship. He tracked his property. Again, makes sense. Etc, etc. - Overall it's a good movie, and vast majority of its problems can be solved with some editing. A few seconds of explanations here and there and some calm periods between action letting confused people to process and understand what's happening and why.

What the real shame is, is that the character of Richard B. Riddick had the potential to become an iconic role for Vin Diesel, much like the T-800 became an iconic role for Schwarzenegger, and it would have been a much better character than Dom Toretto from the Fast and Furious franchise. But, nah, they shat all over it. Hell, they even made a videogame with Riddick, voiced over by Vin Diesel himself, and the story of this videogame actually connects with the rest of the movies, and with the short animated movie they have made with this character. So there was a live action movie, an animated movie, and a videogame (or maybe there were two, I'm not sure, I've only played one), so this was a fantastic opportunity because it is very rare for a movie character to appear in this many areas of entertainment. But they screwed it.

I actually liked this movie. I think the Riddick universe is a pretty cool one. And the Purifier's death scene was moving and visually memorable. The most jarring thing was the vast difference between the technology we saw in Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick.

The riddick movies are so very strange. The first is brutal, the second batshit crazy, then the third is both. Only one speed XD
@shtimpo3 жыл бұрын
It is fun, yes. But just like in The Mummy Returns, sunrise is portrayed wrong: 1. You absolutely cannot run fast enough to be quicker than a planet's rotation cycle 2. Light from the star shines from the horizon over higher places first, and then the lower ones. It's like a wall of light descending from the sky on you. To put it simply, their heads will burn before their legs. Ergo, unless you wear some freaky sci-fi sneakers, you can never outrun a sunrise. Edit: I do need to correct myself, though. The sunrise is NOT portrayed wrong. As our heroes climb the ridge and the sunlight catches up to them, it is visible how it moves down the stone wall. And that is how it is in reality. I was going to go on a tangent about planet mass, surface types and so on, how they are related etc to shed a bit more light on why you cannot outrun a sunrise, but in the end - who gives a shit. The film not making a lick of sense does not stop me from liking it. Was my favorite for years.
@baishihua3 жыл бұрын
@@shtimpo Maybe the planet's rotation is slower hence the large temperature difference?
@eamonnholland53433 жыл бұрын
@@shtimpo #1 purely depends on the rotation speed of the planet. It varies a lot. In our own solar system, the longest day belongs to Venus, at 243 earth days, and the shortest is Jupiter, at 9 hours 55 minutes. The only gripe that Drinker had regarding this scene that is hard to explain is how the planet would have an atmosphere or oxygen to breath, given the extreme daylight temperature. Atmospheric oxygen is generally regarded by astronomers, planetary scientists, and exobiologists as being created by life, which is how a lot of them are, and will be (when we get better telescopes), searching for extraterrestrial life, via the specific oxygen signature in exoplanet spectroscopy. Explaining how oxygen producing life could survive on such a planet would be difficult to explain, but not impossible, especially in a scifi universe.

@hariman77273 жыл бұрын
Yep. It wasn't the same as the original, and it was a very enjoyable sequel to me. The necromungers want more followers. It's a Conan type legend, instead of another action horror movie. The combat shows the chaos and brutality of battle. The necromungers are also a very feudal/honor combat based society, and riddick knows that. Also the rules don't change, as the furian who helped Riddick showed earlier, the conditioning of the necromungers is not absolute. The movie also builds on the fact that Riddick was portrayed as extremely badass in the original, and has him be one of the most capable fighters pretty much anywhere. This honestly sounds like another standard "it's different so it sucks" review of Chronicles of Riddick. I'm also surprised you didn't complain that Judi dench did nothing in this movie. This is pretty much your most disappointing review thus far.
