I thought the same thing. And I actually found such a book, called "The Chronicles of Riddick", but it turned out to be what they call "novelization", that is just a book retelling the movie and not very good at that. The only interesting thing about it was that they have added a short history of the "necromongers" as an appendix in the end - not a bad world-building if it was a series, but the story was nothing more than we already knew from the movie...

I agree. I've rewatched this so many times and always loved it. Such an ENTERTAINING film. I feel like Riddick as a character was still honored in this film, even if the movie surrounding him was just so out there compared to the previous one. It shows there's a lot going on in this universe worth exploring, and even to this day it is still unique and interesting. The first and third movies were better and stuck to the concept more faithfully but I wouldn't say the second movie was bad. It had a lot of flaws but also a lot of fun and charm. Like you said compared to most of what comes out today, this is actually almost necessary to combat the blandness. It is no different from a comic-y style batman or blade film.

Yes. The movie had a few small problems like exploding rocks but nothing that would make it a bad movie. Like, Riddick getting to a "good" planet right before the invasion seems unlikely at first. But then you remember that guy from the first movie sent mercenaries for Riddick exactly *because* he knew about invasion coming. Very logical. And mercenary/bounty hunter catching up with him happened because Riddick used his ship. He tracked his property. Again, makes sense. Etc, etc. - Overall it's a good movie, and vast majority of its problems can be solved with some editing. A few seconds of explanations here and there and some calm periods between action letting confused people to process and understand what's happening and why.

@@mattstorm6568 that, and it feels like Pitch Black isn’t from the same setting as TCoR. Everything’s way too stylised, and because we have no frame of reference for the setting of this movie, we don’t know the _why_ of the stylisation. Where are the elementals from? Is there lots of them? Crematoria is pretty cool, but who owns the place? Who pays the guards? The Necromongers are said to be an existential threat, but to who? Humanity as a whole, or just people in the way of their pilgrimage? Who’s paying the mercs to catch Riddick? What laws did Riddick break? Those weren’t questions in Pitch Black, because Pitch Black wasn’t about any of that. The Chronicles of Riddick *is* about that stuff, but we have no idea as to what any of it means and why. Granted, there’s some cool ideas at play, but because they’re thrown directly into our face with no explanation, we can’t appreciate or enjoy them. It honestly feels like Both Diesel and Twohy had this really cool grand narrative and setting worked out in their heads, but didn’t have a way to introduce us to it, thus ended up making essentially a sizzle-reel for them.
@mattstorm65683 жыл бұрын
@@Ebalosus Yep, I also thought even the action was poorly choreographed. Everything was just like Riddick slices everyone up, 1 guy, 10 guys, 100 doesn't matter. I think the problem lies in that this movie should have been split apart into 2 movies to make a trilogy rather than 2 movies and a tie in animation (which is great btw). The necromonger parts and the bounty hunter/prison escape parts are fine on their own, but like drinker said they clash terribly in the movie. It's like lobster and chocolate ice cream, great on their own but together becomes a mess. The movie introduces the necromonger characters in the begining only to put them down to introduce new bounty hunter and prisoner characters halfway through the movie. Worse the new characters die within 15 minutes having basically no characterization outside of 1 guy so the movie shifts back to the necromonger side characters... It's so strange how it feels like frankenstein of a movie. Say what you want about Vin, but Riddick is his best roll Imo and I think he agrees, and I think this would have been split into 2 distinct movies, rather than the 2 halves we got.

What the real shame is, is that the character of Richard B. Riddick had the potential to become an iconic role for Vin Diesel, much like the T-800 became an iconic role for Schwarzenegger, and it would have been a much better character than Dom Toretto from the Fast and Furious franchise. But, nah, they shat all over it. Hell, they even made a videogame with Riddick, voiced over by Vin Diesel himself, and the story of this videogame actually connects with the rest of the movies, and with the short animated movie they have made with this character. So there was a live action movie, an animated movie, and a videogame (or maybe there were two, I'm not sure, I've only played one), so this was a fantastic opportunity because it is very rare for a movie character to appear in this many areas of entertainment. But they screwed it.

And the whole universe being colonized by humans without shoehorning aliens in just because it's space. You could replace aliens with humans in almost every science fiction space movie nowadays and plotwise it wouldn't make a lick of difference.

I fucking loved it. In 2004 six of the ten highest grossing films were sequels, and Twohy at least had the courtesy to give us visuals we hadn't seen before and a universe that was massively expanded. I get that saying 'they took a risk' is practically a meme at this point, but a younger me watched that DVD probably a dozen times.

I also liked it, because i watched this one first and then learned that there was another movie before this one. Playing "who's the better killer" and to kill someone with a coffee mog was funny. Or when he killed that one guy and then had to rate the knife... or how what the flying (elemental?) lady said turned out to be true in the end... that wasnt so bad in my eyes, because till the last seconds i didnt know what will happen... till the bad guy needed to get himself killed my Riddick so "drago?" doesnt kill him. The end somehow made it so that the evil guy (what ever reason he had) wasnt that insane and still logical, because he didnt want the person who betrayed him to win. The enemys are somehow stupid, but young me didnt mind it and stealing someones soul with magic powers was what the stargate fan in me wanted to see in SciFi. I also laughed when he said "we can take this planet... that doesnt cost more than X ships... i swear" making fun of commanders throwing away lived to win a war.

The relationship between Riddick and Toombs is great on it's own. Their dialogues are easily quotable. "You made 3 mistakes..." "You shoulda taken the money Toombs" "I should of taken the money"

I'll gladly dissagre with you on this one - I like this movie verry much. It have its flaws, but is verry entertaining. It's verry different than Pitch Black - for me it is positive, because why not. And I'll gladly return to this universe - I have it on my DVD collection :D EDIT: Congratulations on 733k subscribers - you deserve this kind of rapid grow!

Same for me. I’d like to see a proper sequel to CoR. The lore of this universe with necromongers is intriguing. Plus Karl Urban as Vaako. I want to see Vaako come back from the underverse.

@@clarity2199 While I really liked Pitch Black, I also really liked Chronicles of Riddick. The follow up Riddick where they tried to take the franchise back to Pitch Black's formula not so much.
@randysmith98413 жыл бұрын
It was entertaining, but formulaic and pretentious at the same time. The 3rd movie was just a pitch black nostalgic remake.
@mattstorm65683 жыл бұрын
I think the point is "Pitch Black" was kinda the small budget teaser and with "Chronicles" it was supposed to be the big budget masterpiece when the reality is it was just a "shut your brain off" B-Movie. I don't hate this film but I thought the character of Riddick could've done something much better.

"And the movie ends with Vin Diesel sitting on a throne, trying to act" So brutal! 😄
@Dutch_bastard_233 жыл бұрын
I actually really loved this movie and had zero problems with Vin Diesel's acting. He's great as riddick. This movie has a special classic cult-sci-fi feel to it and the morbid appearance of the necromongers is quite unique and fitting.
@OronOfMontreal2 жыл бұрын
Vin Diesel has done some very good acting in other movies, but this one wastes his talent, I find, and undoes all the magical surprises and delights of the first in the series.
@michamarkowski22042 жыл бұрын
@@OronOfMontreal There are some great non-FF and non-Riddick movies starring Vin Diesel (e.g. "Find me guilty). All you need is a good script.

Totally agree... I saw this before I saw Pitch Black so I had no frame of reference and just accepted it as-is and it was great. It's also the first Vin Diesel movie I ever saw (because I don't count The Iron Giant) so that probably helped a lot too.

To be honest, I'm a little surprised the Drinker is so hard on this film. I really only agree with his sentiment that the film is bonkers. Perhaps that's one of the reasons I like it. It is all over the place, and completely nuts. I hope, before Vin is too old to play the character, that somebody or some company ponies up the cash to give us his journey into the Underverse. My Dad also really likes the movie, to the point that he's the only 60+ years old retired podiatrist that I know that would unironically say "you keep what you kill....it's the necromonger way!" while eating a steak.
