I can still picture myself standing in a night club staring at the screen and tapping my foot the first time I heard this song, I can still clearly see the faces of all of the people, the room layout, the level of beer in my plastic glass, the exact millimetre my cigarette was down to, everything so clear. Not many songs have had that impact on me to that degree.

Steve ( lead vocal/ bass player), is the last man standing in 2023 from the original lineup. Ian Haug formerly the lead guitarist in another great Australan band no longer with us, Powderfinger has been enjoying being a member of The Church since original guitarist Marty Piper Wilson exited .Peter Koppes later exited and his replacement, Ashley Naylor forner guitarist of local Melbourne band Even. Following Richard Ploogs exit, J Dee Daugherty (ex-Patti Smith Group) played drums from 1990 to 1993. Then Tim Powles ex 80's Australian band The Venetians joined and remains with them to the present day. Their new album is a good'un bringing new feels...

Nick was born in 88?!! Just a gurgling, gorgeous new BABY, while I was a poor mature age Murdoch uni student driving around Perth in my 4th hand old car with my double cassette deck radio, strapped into the seatbelt of my passenger seat, rocking out to all the retro 60's, 70's and latest 80's favourites that I'd laboriously taped off of the radio. That was before DJ's were given orders to talk over the start of songs and cut into the end of songs to give the chop to our little freebie recordings. I feel so old but sooo satisfied that I grew up here throughout the surrounding music sensations of that late 60's, 70's 80's era. Still enjoying some new music but that was such a different world back then.

There are numerous live versions of the song on KZbin- check out the psychedelic symphony version at the Sydney opera house with the orchestra. In 2005 this song was voted the best loved Australian song of the preceding 25 years and was included in the opening ceremony for the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. The Church were part of a “paisley “ revival in the early 80’s in Australia including The Sunnyboys and the Hoodoo Gurus. They played guitar rock, wore paisley shirts and had mod haircuts(except the Hoodoo Gurus didn’t have mod haircuts). They are all still playing today( Sunnyboys) playing their last gigs soon. I think they were trying to rebel against the electronic music that was happening in the early 80s.

The Church are on tour now. Of course Kilbey is the only original member left but he’s the singer and the songwriter and the Drummer has been with them since the 90’s. Ian Haug formerly of Powderfinger is one of the guitarists now with Jeffrey Cain (Remy Zero) and Ashley Naylor (Even, Paul Kelly) rounding out the current lineup. The new song “The Hypnogogue” is really trippy and has an unsettling video.
