Twenty years ago, in October, the first Americans entered Afghanistan with a mission to defeat al-Qa’ida and unseat the Taliban in response to the 9/11 attacks. These CIA intelligence officers entered into northern Afghanistan, joining local militias, and mounted a truly unconventional campaign. While they would achieve successes that surprised even the officers themselves, their victories were tempered by the first casualties of what would become America’s longest war. Joining CSPC is author Toby Harnden to discuss his new book “First Casualty: The Untold Story of the CIA Mission to Avenge 9/11”. Mr. Harnden will be in conversation with CSPC’s Mike Rogers Center for Intelligence & Global Affairs director, Joshua C. Huminski.
