Fair play to Terry Chimes for giving such a warm shout-out to Topper. Terry always was a gentleman

It's just one of those sad realities that Joe Strummer died right before this induction. He was up for playing and they probably would have scorched it. Rumor has it they intended to play but one song, rent a hall across the street and then play for free all night for whoever showed up, which probably would have been half the city of New York. Easily one of the greatest bands ever, and the best live band in rock's illustrious history.

Yawn. Only Joe wasn’t and he was living in squats for years. Also, people love to point out that his dad was a diplomat but they never add that his dad also grew up in an orphanage in India. Selectivity is a wonderful escape clause to push any agenda.

I was lucky enough to see them at The Palladium in NYC with Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen standing near me in the audience, and also at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ. The latter show was the most violent concert I ever attended. The audience kept fighting and shoving each other. I actually feared for my life. They had an opening girl band called "Pulsalama" that was the worst band that ever existed and pissed off everyone in the audience. Will never forget seeing the Clash!

Both are my favorite bands too, awesome. And not too different, why? Here's why: 1. Both experimented with reggae, and other forms of music; not just one formula 2. Regardless of trends, record executive pressure, severe lack of radio play (until late in their career); both did WHATEVER THE FUCK THEY WANTED TO DO!! Both Rush and The Clash never compromised their art to sell records, they realized their legend and influence was much more important. So, no; not too different from each other!

Not only got to see them live, at thebarton theatre, adelaide, south australia in 1982. But had the privilege of going backstage with their entire road crew and around 50 other lucky young punkers! Stoll is one of the most memorable times of my life. Everyone was totally wasted, but topper had to be the most smashed! Got a t shirt signed by the entire band and road crew, but over the years it has become misaced, or stolen by a jelous mate. Anyway, great memories and great live. Ive seen a lot of bands over the years but these guys gave it all for over 2 hours. Brilliant, and a huge part of my teenage years and beyond still till now. Legends.

I was 15 in 1977 and went to see the Clash. My mate's brother was a lot older than us so we had heard Iggy Pop,the stooges,ny dolls,mc5 we had john peel on the radio we loved cpt beefheart, you could send away to trojan records for cheap singles that didn't make it in the uk. The Clash on stage changed me from being a spectator to a doer,I enjoy painting, drawing, guitar, bass, poetry I love my work as a carpenter. I am shit at all of that except I am a good carpenter and well paid to do it,but i love my hobbies too. They gave me access to music and bands who I never would have heard of. In total I saw them 5 times everytime they were perfect( musically too, never a bum note never a mumbled or forgotten vocal by Joe,all the band everytime so pleased to be on stage never a cross word😌)shame is they were perfect when you saw them and no live recording of them can ever really show you what it was like.So get all your mates into a room invite some wierd looking men and women into your bedroom and turn the volume up way too loud and listen to a live set or put on a live dvd.The walk outside and get to see all your neighbours moaning at u and the local goon squad raring to beat the shit out of you . Happy times Bless the young who love this they have found this music ,much in the way I now love the blues from way before I was born

Strummer Cash no offence mate, I was being a little glib with that comment coz it's often deliberately overlooked by critics and fans. When I listen to 'This is England' (which, I agree, is the best track on 'Cut The Crap') it just makes me wonder what it would've been like with Jones and Headon on board. There is a demo version on KZbin which, for my money, is better than the album version (less Bernie involved) and well worth a listen. For me 'Cut The Crap' is a big 'if only ...' and makes me just a little sad.

Doubt Lydon was touched. He saw the HOF as a joke. In fact he often bashed The Clash, said they were never a punk band, bashed them since the 70s saying punk died when they signed to a major label (how many majors did the Pistols sign and get dropped from?). He even took some shots at Joe after he died but that is who Lydon is. He does a lot of it to be controversial, for attention. He still claims the Ramones had no influence, were also never a punk band but every band that came out of England back then can tell you the Ramones had such a massive impact on that scene when they came over there. Lydon and the Pistols were of course at that show.

Had not seen this in about a decade. Surprised there was no thanks for Mikey Dread, he saved their life in Jamiaca when in the studio they had no extra money to pay off the gangs in the area like the Rolling Stones did. No mention of Don Letts was weird too.

It still sucks watching this because Joe so badly wanted to reunite The Clash but sadly passed away. It was going to happen.Mick said Joe was working on songs for The Clash. Paul at the time didn't seem on board though but I am willing to be he would've joined them. It's so sad Joe couldn't be there and his career was so on the way upwards when he passed. Just not fair. So thankful I got to see him perform live. Joe's passing had such a impact on Mick and Paul. Both really got back into music after he died, especially Paul. They of course also were in Gorillaz together as well.

Classy for Mick to mention Bernie Rhodes because I know they certainly had their issues with each other.

@@Vichedges No it isn't. Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious are plastic punks, they never believed what they sang... Johnny Rotten is a trump and Farage supporter, and loves the queen. He is the definition of fake poser punk

Major Credit for Mick there. Could you Imagine Rotten and co saying the same for The Clash? Not a chance, that's why they'll always be much higher thought of...well certaintly be me.
