Let me make something clear because there's a ton of confusion in the comments I never expected GOG to make changes to any of the games, their purpose is to preserve old games (Thats Amazing!). My disappointment is directed at Capcom not having prior plans to do something with the trilogy therefore giving GOG the greenlight to do barebones ports.

@@Bawkbasoup I still want my dream re-release. All costumes and weapons across all releases. Battle mode from Saturn. Built-in rando. Mario Maker-style map editor that can connect assets from all 3 games, giving people freedom to just make mods on the fly, right there, in the game. And hey, why not let them upload custom backgrounds and build their own rooms? I mean shit, Forge mode in Halo came out 20 years ago. Map editors existed in the 90s.

@@philthestampede Sadly, map editors seems to be a thing of the past... Very few games nowadays bother including one (this is why the ArmA franchise will forever be goated, they all come with one, and it's really easy to use too)

Sphere Hunter went over some details. It seems GOG actually just took the Windows versions and got them up and running again. It was a little passion project. They had to ask Capcom to let them do it. At least that's how I understood it.

Literally just the old version, GOG asked for permission to patch the game and share profits, basically. There was actually a time when this was all GOG was, actually. That's why it's called Good Old Games, they were old PC versions from the 90s and early 2000s that they got running, having modern releases on there DRM free is relatively new to the platform. Essentially, what you should be saying is that everyone who let's GOG do this is lazy and doesn't care unless it's $$$ but you won't say that because things like this are only bad when Capcom does it.

BAWK you need to know that GOG is basically just a storefront for Good Old Games. Hence the name. It is because most old PC games have compatibility issues with modern hardware and Windows/Mac/Linux so the point of GOG is to just have the same games exactly like they are on disk but streamlined and available instead of being "abandonware" and would just work directly on your OS instead of needing some thirdparty tools and fan patches. For example you can find Silent Hill 4 in GOG but not on steam. Konami outright abandoned Silent Hill for the longest time especially the classic ones. So GOG made it available again. It is a storefront for mainly game preservation. Think of it as just a catalogue for publishers to keep their games available instead of being pirated. It was the original project of CDProjekt, hence their name. That they wanted to make games more available in Poland because of the history of piracy and even sanctions.

Tbh GOG is now just....GOG. They just concentrate more on modern indie games than older ones. If anything, ZOOM Platform (no not that video conference Zoom one) is the one that genuinely cares about preserving old games and they seriously mean it as their work on getting the old games work are just superior to what GOG does and have more content with it. Incoming for example on GOG lacks one more expansion whereas ZP has all of em. Hell if they have something exclusive they will publish it on Steam themselves later on.

Adding a bit more info from GOG: They started by selling them as shipping (back in the 90's/00's) and made translations into polish from scratch (for every single game), they sold very well through the years and they created the first witcher (before enhanced edition) and with a few sales, they had the idea of GOG (around 2004 if I'm not mistaken) and like Half-life 2 on it's release: they made a "remaster" version of witcher 1 (enhanced edition) and created the page as we know today. From 2 bros to a whole company (with rises and fallen achievements through this 2 decades).

That's the big thing for me and GoG - it's DRM free. I don't need a launcher, everything is prepackaged. You actually own the literal game that you've purchased. Many of the older games are dirt cheap too. I really can't recommend supporting GoG enough.

I thought about this and the only thing you have to worry about is denovo anti tamper which does checks periodically. Otherwise the steam deck would be a failure because how could that go online away from home? I use both. Also I don’t have enough space to download a copy of each game but that’s the only way you will “own the games” on GOG Anyone who bought alpha protocol on steam before it was taken down, can still play it.

According to Hideki Kamiya, Capcom probably lost the source code for RE2/RE3. So the reason they haven't done an official re-release and even seem reluctant to talk about the originals is because they're too embarrassed to admit they lost the code.

I can understand that excuse in the case of SEGA with Sonic Unleashed. Developing for PS3 was very complicated and cannot be reverse engineered. But in the case of CAPCOM there are no excuses. They can perfectly hire expert modders to port content from PS1, Saturn, DreamCast and Nintendo. These consoles are easily emulated and developing for them was not so complicated. A phone call to Martin BioHazard and they recovered 99% of the source code from the betas 🤷🏻‍♂️

This is an unfortunate truth for several Japanese developers in the 90's. However Capcom does have a vault for some of their history, but it is uncertain what all of it's contents are. I think reverse engineering should be considered as an option if it is a worst case scenario. Bottom line for me, i strongly believe they don't see the classic games as profitable at this point regardless of the whereabouts of the source code. Maybe this release is a way to gauge interest, but that remains to be seen.

I don't think that's the case they clearly have the source code for all the Marvel verse capcom series games and they have the source code for all the mega man games. Why on earth wouldn't they have the Resident Evil source codes. At dimension people started saying that about final fantasy 8 and then when there was a remaster of it so take the source code thing with the grain of Is salt

I somewhat agree on what you say Bawk but I think people have the wrong idea for this release. As I read in some comments in this video, people still say stuff like "remaster". Yes, remastered collections usually come with special bonus content and HD visuals and whatnot. THIS ISN'T A REMASTER COLLECTION and Capcom never said it was. It's just a GOG release of the original PC trilogy for convenience for modern PCs. I know we all want something like Tomb Raider Collection but Capcom never said it was going to be something like that. Personally I'm glad they're doing something like this, game preservation is something not many people take into account.

The fact of the matter is that it's a shadow drop but Konami of ALL companies did a better job with SH4 than Capcom did with Resident Evil 1. They added a bunch of quality of life stuff to SH4 such as wide screen, 4k, controller support, optimizations. Even RE2 OG that is coming out next is the old version and not the newer version that is much better. You don't find it stupid that Capcom is putting less effort into the first 3 mainline RE games than Konami put into a re-release of a not as popular Silent Hill game? Why even play these GOG versions of RE when better versions exist somewhere else? There is no incentive. There is incentive to play SH4 on PC though because they made the user experience better.

Something to note: in *many* cases you are far better off obtaining copies of old games on GOG than on Steam. GOG versions frequently function properly out of the box and may come with popular fan bugfixes pre-installed (such as all of the old Sierra games generally being installed with ScummVM by default) while Steam versions often need some troubleshooting to get working right. GOG also sells games DRM-free, while Steam does function as DRM for those titles.

RE 1-3 was basically done solely by GOG. Capcoms whole involvement was basically giving GOG permission to port the trilogy and where GOG can send the royalties. That's probably why there's no HD remaster version of 1-3. Plus the classic games department at Capcom probably have their hands full getting MvC Arcade sorted and ready for launch. That's not to say though that if we make enough noise about it then who knows, maybe Capcom will see the dollar value in creating an officially sanctioned/developed HD Remaster update for the GOG versions.

Yes, I agree Bawk! Have a Tomb Raider Trilogy approach complete with achievements. Combine the different ports of each respective entry in the first three games in an all-in-one package. There is so many different kinds of "modes" and options from all the ports that you could literally play for years. Not even dipping into the mod-ability portion which of course would make it definitive and tell Capcom to shut up and take my money 😄.

Anyone who wants to see a Capcom-developed, or even an outsource-modded Deluxe Ultimate Super-Final Edition of Classic RE, should just drop the 25 bucks. If enough of us do that, they'll consider it. At this point, they could even turn the job over to modders and tell them they want Rebirth and Seamless HD in a format that boots up and runs on a modern machine without the end user needing to mess with the files, and to add a few more options and unlockables. It would actually probably be a faster, cleaner job than Capcom could do themselves since the modders are more used to working with classic RE, whereas Capcom's teams are mostly concerned with developing modern AAA titles.

the difference with Classic Trilogy and Origin Collection, Classic Trilogy is thirdparty GoG Origin Collection is in-house Capcom, which is why they're able to add more than just Remaster like Wesker mode But I think, they could finally port Code Veronica on PC for the first time.

But if you google re classic rebirth you’ll find that website where you grab the rebirth dll and patch 1.1, drop that exe and dll in install directory. After you grab that google seamless hd mod. They have a website and discord for help. The re1 hd mod still has some ai ugly but re2/3 mods are on version 2 and look amazing.

It being a project that essentially came from the GoG wishlist I didn't expect much beyond, these now work out of the box on modern systems, no need for compatibility modes or community patches. Would have been great to get some sort of Remaster trilogy, but as I see it, Capcom doesn't care enough as they don't have the appeal of full fledged remakes. These will still work fine for now, played a bit of the first RE port and it's working great so can't complain about anything, it's OG Resident Evil trilogy now on PC, easily accessible without strings attached.

GOG is a games preservation type of deal. Usually it's all about patching the good old executable to make it more W10/W11 compatible. But the thing is, these games did have a number of PC releases, each version different in some regard, and some of the QoL patches could've been easily applied at that point as it's a matter of injecting very little code (that's how the community patches do it anyway). Overall, I guess I'll be buying it once they release RE2. Paying upfront for 3 games while only 1 is playable is not my thang.

I'm glad that mods can work with these GOG versions. I was hoping these Resident Evil classic collection games would get the same treatment as the Tomb Raider Remasters as well. One thing to add on top of the negative critique is I've seen a tweet from Gman Lives & multiple playthroughs from other streamers of the GOG Resident Evil game having some kind of frame skips. There seems to be a frame skip every 2 or 3 seconds. I just don't know if something in the setting would fix that or if the HD mods could fix that?

The reason why these games are on GOG and not Steam is because GOG were insisting to Capcom to re-release these classic games going so far to develop and sending a demo of the original RE running on modern computers. Capcom reluctantly gave them the greenlight to develop the ports and released them on their platform. The reason why these are bare is because they're in fact modify versions of the original PC releases because Capcom couldn't be bothered to look for the original codes.

The Tomb Raider remastered trilogy will now be known as the definitive remastered mark to hit for classic games that will end up getting a remaster. The only problem is that Capcom has a tendency to lose their source code for games so unless they do what Aspyr did for the TR remasters then there might be some hope for the same treatment to the RE trilogy

Anyone thinking/or has thought that the GOG version is gonna be the ultimate version of Resident Evil Trilogy needs to get off of their high horse and has no clue what GOG is for. GOG is not a competition or anything to Steam, Epic, or anything like that. GOG's original mission was to preserve classic games that have been forgotten, maybe a little outdated (like the original Warcraft 1 and 2 on DOS) and make them available to people who used to play them and want to replicate the same experience they had when the game originally came out. So while people out there moan about "There isn't this feature on the GOG version" or other stuff, others can jump back into the game of their youth or something like that. Is it perfect? Hell no! You may not be interested in looking at games like that through NostalgiaVision, but some people do.

The main difference between RE and TR1-3 Remaster is the fact that original TR games were available to buy FOR YEARS so even without the remaster you could legally play than. Not so much with RE. But now if the sales are good maybe Capcom would decide to make them like the TR remakes but still: LEAVE THE OG RE alone. It's great example of game preservation.

I absolutely reject any rhetoric about "this is a bare bones re-release". Of course it is, it's all it should be. Its entire point is to make these games accessible for current year, it doesn't need a billion options and features that are unnecessary in order to have this classic gaming experience. My theory is that they just did this as a preservation of the original games because they will release on all platforms the true remastered trilogy or maybe just RE1 remake, so the 3 remakes would be like the way to play the trilogy for modern audiences (I hope that is not the case)

While i can see what you meant in the video, the whole point with GOG is to be able to play the PC release version on a modern PC, not the Saturn or N64 versions.

I really want to be able to buy the Japanese versions and change the language to English. I love resident evil but I'm not "great" at it and I love that the zombies aren't bullet sponges in the Japanese releases. Especially in RE2 and 3.

I knew that some people would be disappointed with the re-release of the classic RE triology on gog, because it didn't have anything new, but I kind of expected that because all the ports of resident evil on pc like re4 hd, re1 remake and resident evil revelations followed this same pattern for example, re4 at 60 fps, some reload animations are at 30 fps, and the remake has some area that received a terrible upscaling that you can't see anything, an example is the piano room, the only exception is re0, which received a real remaster but because capcom still owned the source code. but I'm happy with launch on gog. It could be worse, they could sell each game for 40 dollars like some game companies

Rather have it on GOG than on any other platform. Being DRM-free is a really dealbraker in the release of the games(at least for me)

Gog released a patch for the first game as. It runs pretty good for me now. Don’t know how it would be for everyone else but I’m glad it runs now. Unfortunately the quality of the fmv scenes and intro still looks terrible.

The way the release and how they treated Dragon Dogma 2 makes me fear a little for capcom. But i am glad these at least exist.
