S+ tier ending lmao 😂 I've got lucky during my lifetime of bowling. Nothing cracked or compromised... Yet. Also storing all of my gear in plastic storage bags to help protect the coverstocks from artifacts. I've invested way too much money into my arsenal in the last year and a half since starting the sport again. No way in hell I'm leaving any of it in my car even overnight lmao.

A great video Luke on a topic that too many ppl like to argue about. I’ve heard too many times ppl complaining about they will never buy a particular brand of ball because they had one that cracked while never considering that maybe they were the reason. I’ve been bowling since the mid 90s and only had one ball technically crack at the bridge. Currently I own 28 balls across SPI, Brunswick brands, and Motiv and no issues. I consider every ball, even the ones I don’t use, an investment and I take care of my investments. Keep doing what you always do with giving us unbiased honest information we can digest and use. Thank You!

Wow, interesting video but yet very important. Thank you for sharing Luke. I might need to rewatch this because that was a lot of good information. Now I did make the dumb mistake the one time of leaving my ball out in the car in my bag, but one day I was bowling and it cracked after I went down the lane after that I was make sure to bring my bag inside no matter how many days in between Bowling, and none of my bowling balls since then except for wear and tear, sometimes slipping out of my hands or hard down the lane

Having lost many balls to cracking over the last 6 years I agree. Most have been temp controlled, but open. Only time I post em though is to give em a send off like an obituary to an old friend. Saddest losses so far: a US made Pink Widow undrilled as we were shut down for Covid before I drilled it, Statement Solid, loved that ball, 2 separate Storm Fights, and a Street Fight. Those were my favorite classic Storm balls. Have one of each left fingers crossed on those lol.

Great video content, thanks,A friend gave me a ball I took it to get it plugged and re drilled, it literally blew up 😅 so I just threw it away. Pro shop operator didn't charge me for regrilling it. I mean for plugging it up, I tell my bowling associates about what you are saying. I'm always reading up on stuff. They still leaving the ball outside in the hot car in the winter time in the cold and the cold weather so it's up to them. I got plastic bags. I got a couple bowling balls laying around right now. I got to put on some plastic and put them back in the box. Put them in the closet where it's dark. I just have one ball that was on the carpet and I woke up one day. It was cracked all the way around so I threw it away. Now I just storm in the boxes that they came in. I got to get some more plastic bags and I don't let them sit on the directly on the carpet after anything like that. Thanks again. Have a nice weekend. Thank you. The holidays coming up for her I think. What is it? Labor Day or you know what I'm talking about. Take care of yourself, you and your family. Thanks for the info. I'm out of here.

I take the best care I can. I use Immortalizer bags, store in controlled area, store fingers down, use the balls as much as I can, and have a pro shop that uses best practices in drilling. From the beginning of resin balls, I have had 1 crack. It was a plug and redrill with interchangeable thumb. It cracked from the plug to the thumb. I agree completely the cracking issues are almost user caused.

Plastisizer evaporates over time. Some coverstock formulas allow off gassing more than others. As the coverstock shrinks stress is created and cracking occurs at a weak spot. Halo cracks occur from impact near a hole.

I have only had 4 bowling balls crack on me. 2 were my fault and left them in the car in extreme temps. One was a used ball I got a war eagle from someone and loved it but it was stored in my locker at the lanes and went to the bowl alley a few weeks later and it was cracked. I was sad but I was like oh well. I got it for free so I wasn't upset. The other one I have to commend Motiv or their reps for this one. I had a ghost jackal that cracked around the emblem. It was out of warranty but I saw it was an issue with the early jackals. So I messaged Motiv bout the ball. They didn't even ask what happened. They just asked for a serial number and told me they were sorry and they sent me a brand new one at no charge.

Been bowling 30 years. In that time I've only had two Roto Grips and one Columbia crack. All of them were 5+ years old undrilled and still in their boxes. After drilling they cracked within two seasons and one within 2-3 months. One of the Rotos did have sharp edges on the fingers but the others were beveled. I guess your statement about old balls getting harder and more brittle is the likely cause.

I had about 7-8 balls crack from sitting in my house. They all were balls that i had put aside for months or years. I have concluded the same as you that it is drying out from open air. GREAT VIDEO, what about JOPO thumb installation, they say not to bevel the hole. is it because the outer sleeve will help protect the edge from cracking on impact?
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 3 ай бұрын
No, it's actually to protect the top of the jopo sleeve. If the top of the hole is beveled away, when you cut the top of the jopo sleeve off, it's going to be exposed a little and it's just plastic, so it's super fragile and won't absorb anything.

My thick shell balls have never cracked since the 80's Hammers were introduced. I've had three piece balls crack in a few weeks to a year or two. The scientific me says it is due to the three piece balls have three different densities that expand & contract at different rates. When the holes are drilled into the ball it allows moisture & heat to be introduced via environmental factors. I've not had any crack since I've used Zip Loc Jumbo 2-1/2 gallon bags for storage. None of my cracked balls have been near the finger holes either. I have two OG 1980's Columbia Blue Dot polyester balls that I still use for spares and they are crack fee.

Yeah I've said that in a couple other comments but it didn't make it into the video as a specific, it's just kind of involved in the higher performance ball category. That's what I meant by saying if you want durability, just drill a urethane ball, all the current urethane balls are just as good as the ones from 40 years ago, or just as durable at least. If the manufacturers were intentionally trying to make stuff crack faster so people would buy more balls, all the new urethanes would be cracking too and they aren't.

Thank you Luke for all of the Classroom Series vids you have done. They are a wealth of great information. I refer to them when my game has a "me?" or "my equipment?" moment. Sightly off topic, but could you do a Classroom Series on ball layouts? Maybe some general thoughts or guidelines on what type of ball (high, medium or low R.G.) and how the core position/layout would affect each type of ball? Is using 1 standard layout on different equipment the best way to go? I had read a reply from you in the comments of an older video that you preferred longer pin layouts on a high R.G. ball. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated!

5:50 That's why you should RUN from any PSO who glues your grips on the bottom of the ball and especially those who don't cut their grips perfectly flush when putting em in. As soon as that glue touches the cover of the ball and it's been laying in your extremely hot (or cold) car, its on borrowed time and it's only a matter of time before the ball gets cracked all the way around. Classic ripple effect.
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 3 ай бұрын
They shouldn't have to cut the grips except in extreme circumstances. The grip should be glued at the point where the natural top sits flush with the ball, wherever that is depending on pitches, and then at the opposite side, which should be pushed down to sit flush with the ball. With MOST people's pitches, this can be achieved without distorting the grip and also leaving the top of it with the natural finish so it's not sharp or irritating from being razor cut. Naturally, more extreme pitches make "top trimming" a necessity. But yes, lots of stuff can be done to significantly reduce the probability of cracking or even eliminate it completely.

R2S is also on a lot of SPI stuff, so it'll naturally have more cracks. What's your opinion on type of equipment that cracks more often? Of the ones I've had crack, almost all were large asymmetric cores. Also funny that you mention urethane. My biggest loss was probably a Storm Thunderflash. One of the thickest covers of any ball I remember seeing.

Manufacturers are too nice tbh. The number I've gotten replaced for people because they didn't bevel the holes enough is wild. I'll tell them hey I'm pretty sure this isn't covered but this guy is really annoyed and get a response like "you move a ton of product or they buy lots of stuff" and they take care of it. My favorite is Dot stuff drilled upside down getting replaced. It's actually insane.

Very good video to inform people. I think however that cracking has increased from decade to decade or resin balls. Which would indicate that something changed in the manufacturing side. Whether this is intentional or not, i cannot say. But based on human nature and about the "planned obsolescence" which we see in other industries, i would bet it is not "by accident".
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 3 ай бұрын
It's just that 3 piece balls with higher performance covers are just more naturally fragile. The current urethane balls they're making now will last just as long as the urethane balls from 30 years ago did, it's more about what they are than how they're currently made
@bowlingxp8345
@bowlingxp8345 3 ай бұрын
@@LukeRosdahl Then that would mean that some of the materials are significantly different in the coverstock i guess. The urethane base (i assume) has no reason to change. The other additives have been around since the 90s-2000s, and i don't know of any changes in the manufacturing process. The only thing i can think of is some of the additives make them more fragile. Or maybe more/different plasticizers? But there is a limit for that i guess, as then a ball might be softer and beyond the limits allowed. I got nothing. I just mean that i wouldn't be surprised (with the difficulties the industry has had over the years and since sales went down) if there was some planned obsolescence in there as well.

I really haven't seen any increase in cracking over the last couple decades personally. I started in a shop in the early 2000s and I think there was actually more cracking back then than there is now, I know certain balls were famous for it because something in the chemical makeup was wonky. People were using stuff longer back then too, they didn't have as many balls available, so most people didn't have 20 different reactive balls laying all over their house.

I have had approximately 15 to 20 bowling balls in the back of my car for the past 3 to 4 years in Arizona. I primarily use Motiv balls, I think I only own one storm ball. I'm not quite sure why cracking happens or whose fault it ultimately is, but I'm not sure I believe the Heat myth. I am simply far too lazy to drag all the balls I own in and out of my vehicle all the time. If a ball cracks I will just buy a new one, but so far thank God nothing has ever happened.
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 3 ай бұрын
Heat makes the ball swell and 3 piece balls components all swell and shrink at different rates. It's definitely not an absolutely going to happen if you leave your balls in the car thing, it's kind of like drilling near the pin. Not a good idea, but not always an absolute death sentence
@myshield142
@myshield142 3 ай бұрын
@@LukeRosdahl I certainly agree with this. I wasn't going to get this far into it, but I work for the world's largest Coatings manufacturer. I know Coatings very well and how much they can change on a molecular level with tiny changes. I think there may be structural issues on how some of these components are made, sometimes things simply do not react well with expansion and contraction dynamics. I am certainly no expert in how bowling balls are made, but on some level it works just like everything else. In other words, there is no such thing as just being an acrylic purse' (my coating reference), there are a million different ways that you can make (alter) an acrylic so it can have different uses or purposes with its own levels of strength, bondability or permeability. So my only slightly educated guess in this whole scenario is that we simply do not have the right chemical makeup in some of these balls to appropriately deal with expansion and contraction issues and they crack under the stress. Which makes it a resin design problem versus just a heat problem. P. S. love the videos 😁
@myshield142
@myshield142 3 ай бұрын
To add an additional thought that nobody asked for... but I'm bored so here it goes. My suspicion ultimately is that it has something to do with the interior of the bowling ball not necessarily the cover stock. Virtually all cover stocks that I can see that have a permeable surface AKA non urethane balls or polyester balls, under no observable pressure the oil will dissipate into the cover stock almost immediately. This would lead one to believe that flowing the opposite direction with relative ease should also be true. Which means that the problem ultimately lies somewhere underneath the cover stock that under resistance is not able to pass the fluid back the other direction. Thus causing cracking under the extreme pressure. Also forgive me as some of this doesn't read quite right because I am doing voice to text for this while I'm driving, lol.
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 3 ай бұрын
All good! Yeah some specific balls have historically cracked quite a bit more than others, there have been a few pretty famous ones for that, and that falls under the manufacturing defects territory. I used to work in the concrete world too and some of the things you said are familiar, I used to run strength and permeability tests almost daily. I know that Storm cores swell and shrink a little more dramatically than other companies, and manufacturing in north Utah I'm sure has something to do with it too. Plus the modern 3 piece balls components all are different densities and swell and shrink at different rates.

People should look into Life After Death by CTD. It replaces some of the plasticizer that gets lost over time so it doesnt lose moisture over time. Another thing is to periodically rotate balls if they are not in use and sit in a closet or elsewhere. I have a few bowling balls that I do this to and have had no issues with cracking.

You can’t replace plasticizer after the ball has been made. Sorry.

What ball did you hate that you intentionally let crack?

Hustle PRO, just absolutely awful for me lol. I left it on a rack on the back in the shop for a few months and it started cracking so I helped it out lol

The reality is, that anyone can speak to their own experiences. And if I say I've had 3 storms balls crack out of 15 storm balls I've owned. And 0 brunswick balls crack out of 70. You make of that what you will, because someone here is also going to say I'm wrong. Even though this is my experience.. I'm not a statistician, but it's clear what my opinion is. Some pro shop guys might want to stay in someones good graces at the companies they do business with..🤷‍♂️

Interesting because it’s been the opposite for me. While I have a much smaller sample size, out of the 30+ Storm balls me and my younger brothers have owned at some point or another, none have cracked. While of around 10 B7 balls we have had, two of them have cracked. Although both of them were Hammer Raws.. odd

Had my tropical surge crack on carpet downstairs in basement, 1 Gold rhino (remake) and a Columbia 300 wicked encounter (pre B7). Owned mostly B7 and had the one crack. 4 storm balls. I wished my Wild Thing cracked (I threw in the dumpster after a few years of trying to get it to roll well for me.

@bunker5696 in all fairness, I have seen brunswick balls crack before. Just not one of my own. And I leave them in the car most of the time. The last one I saw crack was the reactive phantom from a few years ago.

Yeah I'm just saying I have enough general experience to say it happens to everybody, especially when dealing with hundreds a year in a pro shop

Wow allow me to interpret the last 30 seconds of this video. If you have a different opinion it isn't open for discussion. There will be no critical thinking and conversation about this topic. What I say is fact and if you disagree you are dumb. Great to see we can exchange ideas and opinions and are very receptive to open dialog and discussions. This type of thinking is exactly why the country is in the state we are in.

That's not it, you completely misinterpreted what I said 180 degrees the wrong direction. It's not about what I'M saying or about me, it's about fact being fact and not open to interpretation or subject to someone's opinions. People try to argue or drop their uninformed opinion in there like it should cancel out actual objective fact or should matter. If you've watched my videos at all, you know I'm ALL ABOUT critical thinking and conversation, not going along with the groupthink or the narrative or the agenda, breaking away from that and thinking on your own and having actual dialogue. However, this is a different and unique situation. People argue about this topic endlessly, and most of them are wrong about it, so in this specific instance, the facts are what the facts are, and facts should matter. I've argued for YEARS with people about these topics, and people continue to reject facts for their own ignorant opinions and I'm not going to tolerate any of that on this video and this particular subject because the ignorance just confuses people. I don't want to allow people to be misinformed by those who don't know the facts or don't know what they're talking about. So I agree with you 100%, we need more critical thinking and conversation, we need exchange of ideas and opinions and if you look at any of my comments sections, they're filled with me having open dialogue and discussions, I have dozens of hours long livestreams where I talk to my chat the entire time. However, again, this isn't an opinion topic. This is a don't drop heavy objects on your ipad screen or it'll crack, change your oil or your engine will seize up, fill your car up with gas or it won't keep moving type of subject. These are scientific factual causes of cracking that are indisputable.
