Nice vid Liam, can you explain how you connect 2 songs on the ableton set? Do you stop the session at end of a song and start another session for the next song with a pause in between? Or do you flow all songs into the same live session? If so just changing tempos between songs? That's been a burning question of mine for live sets. Thanks for the advice.
@LiamKillen16 күн бұрын
With full songs it would be tricky - there’s a bit more of a sense of improv to what I do because I’m literally just looping my own samples and jumping from one to the next to create a set. If you did a full song thing I’d imagine that the transitions would have to be more or less rehearsed, or you can work out a loop at the end of one song to transition into a loop of the beginning of another song. Hope this helps!

The APC-40 is dope and removes the need for an 8x8 Grid controller. Allen & Heath Xone K2 is an even more simplified approach for Ableton and gives you more knobs and encoders for fx. However it only works if you have a 4 track setup in Ableton instead of 6 like in your video (luckily for my hip hop sets I only need 3 tracks for Drums, Music and Vocals). I love it because I can scroll to and select the exact clip/scene that I want to launch like a CDJ, saving me from accidentally launching the wrong clip or scene lol

I found that working with Ableton for a live set is way way better. Better plugin, easier to organize and you can really customize your workflow. Ableton + push2 + MIDI controller beat my Octatrack 10 times overs and still have energy to beat my MC-707. For an event I would have to add a laptop, but for liveset to stream or just composing a track, that setup is king. I was a fool to want to go dawless, that's so a PITA!
@LiamKillen16 күн бұрын
Yeah - for a live thing nothing beats software or some sort of software hybrid

Great setup! I love my APC40 as well. Just have to comment on your remark that Stutter effects are "overused".. I would agree but I think it's a bit more accurate to say that they're "over-relied upon." Growing up listening to glitch masters like Flashbulb and BT, they're using stutter effects as their own language, making music practically from the processing itself. Most ppl throw a stutter on as a fill and then it sort of does sound a bit out-of-left-field or slapped-on because they're just expecting the effect trigger to do something cool *for them* instead of using the effect as an element to do something intentional. I think glitch effects properly utilized can alter the track's landscape, but again, it has to be appropriate in the track too.

I have been planning to buy this now as i am slowly transitioning from Logic pro x to Ableton to get back to more of experimental music which revolves around sampling. The only question i have is, would investing in this help me with any of the production i will be doing in Ableton or is it just a good control surface designed for live for live performance? I already have an Akai mpk3 mini and another 37 notes midi keyboard. Would adding this would bring any utility value? Appreciate all the answers!!

Both of these instruments are also very proficient in a production setting. The Big Six is arguable MORE proficient in that sort of setting honestly - here's a video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nH_YlGWMl5uHd7c

Great video great sound. The SSL Big Six is huge to haul around especially if your live set is centered on Ableton and you don’t need the inputs. Is there really nothing else with the same tactile experience in a smaller for factor? Awesome work always.

I like it precisely because of the size and feel! But yeah there’s for sure smaller options. It is big but I have a backpack I can actually fit it in along with my laptop + APC 40 mkii Thank you for watching 😊

Cool stuff! I'm debating getting rid of my syntakt for a more simple drum computer like the tr8s, but on the other hand the syntakt has so much to offer I feel like I havent scratched the surface. I'm not one to compose tracks, I just want to jam and have fun and have trouble with that using the elektron machines. Ah maybe I just need to dive into it a lil more (and pick up a torso t1 since theyre siiiick). But yeah, simpler instruments do make for more enjoyment in jamming for me.

Have you set up any FX "scenes" for your X-fader, so you could do Octatrack like FX fades? I've never seen anyone use the X-fader on the APC.
@LiamKillen16 күн бұрын
I’ve never seen it either actually - something I’ll def consider though
@olafsigursons16 күн бұрын
That's not how it works ;) The fader is for cue A or B. ie, you can set a track to send audio either to A or B, and the fader mix those two bus. See A and B as two output bus.
@isaac.anthony16 күн бұрын
@@olafsigursons so couldn't you have a different FX bus on A and B like the Octatrack? Generally A will be blank and B will have a different FX combo, depending upon which scene you choose.
@maikvanrossum15 күн бұрын
@@isaac.anthony yes you can, but as far as I know that’s not how Octatrack works. Scenes consist of different settings or states, and the crossfader transforms between them. Another device I know that can do this is Maschine / Maschine+, that also has scenes. But it uses automated transformations by activating another stored scene / snapshot.
@isaac.anthony15 күн бұрын
@@maikvanrossum and the X-fader on the APC is just a macro controller. I'm pretty sure you can delete it's dedicated function of A-B and make it a macro controller, which is what the X fader on the octatrack is.

all the sounds you are making sound like something I would describe as 'ableton trash' its the really tinny house loops, that a lot of people with ableton make with that same sound.
