Sometimes you just have to wait them out. This cold spell we had really stalled the fish but it put the shad in bigger groups. So made the fishing tough but did pull a few.

That net was plum full of juicy bait. I need to get me one of those tapped nets.

That was one heck of a shad haul! One decent fish is always better than none! This cold snap has been just that, COLD!

Yeah it has definitely been cold. I was really surprised to catch a decent fish. Didn't really think I'd catch anything but it worked out.

Great job my friend. You said it before, a good cat fisherman has to be able to adjust when it comes to finding bait. I’m starting to have withdrawals myself 😂 enjoyed it👍

Man I have experienced that throw with little threadfins when hunting gizzards, but I can't wait to get a net full of those and literally have to toss some back!

Lol yeah it was pretty awesome. Could have kept them to freeze but I don't care for frozen when I can get fresh.

Amen, can't wait to get out! (Subscribed & liked) Excellent explanations, I learned a lot. I've only ever parked over points, and hills with nightcrawlers under slip floats. Enjoyed your day with you, and appreciate the video. (I also let them go.)

you can use plainer boards while anchored in current to spread the baits
@mickaburkhart144 ай бұрын
Yeah I have done that. I find that you really can't control the slack from the planer boards to the hooks. But it does work. I've caught fish doing it for sure.

If you will soak your net overnight with fabric softener it will really help soften it and make it easier to throw. Just add one capful of softener and fill your bucket with water until your net is completely covered.
@mickaburkhart144 ай бұрын
OK awesome thank you. That's a neat tip. Yeah that first throw the net was still very stiff. I'll soak the net today.

Awesome video. Thanks for the information about the shad and what to look for after bad weather. The rivers here in SC have been so flooded that I have been fishing small lakes for bass. But over the last week or more it's been too cold and windy for that. I may try the Broad River tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Well, you just learned me a thing or two. I hadn't thought about the shad kill much. I have caught some notable big fish. Our area has experienced some cold weather since fall. The most drastic being here recently. Temperatures dove down to single digits. I wonder how cold it needs to be to have a shad kill?
@mickaburkhart143 ай бұрын
It typically happens when temps hit the teens and single digits. Not so much the temperature kills them its the drastic chage in the water temp when that happens.
@markybob_bassplaya14624 ай бұрын
You sir are dedicated. First day the temps get above 32, and there you are. I guess the coming rains made today the day. Thanks for the content! Do those triple threats have an offset eye? I always fished straight eyes (trigger the hook), but I am thinking I could improve hook up with no "trigger" action on the hook, especially dragging. Nice haul with the new tape net. Gone twice using my new one, all I am catching on Watts Bar is small bream. I have casted on about 8 schools down in 40 foot, and they are all bream. Maybe if I get more experience using the scope I will learn what to cast and not to cast to. If you get a chance, maybe a shot of your livescope showing what you are seeing?
@mickaburkhart144 ай бұрын
Thank you. Yeah them triple threats have an offset eye. I was using straight eyes for a bit but still didn't out perform the triple threats. Well I don't have live scope on my boat yet. I just use my side and down scan and sonar to find them.

You can soak that net overnight in scent free fabric softener and it will work great! How you liking the MadKat reels so far?
@mickaburkhart144 ай бұрын
Yeah your the second person to let me know that. See those are the little kept secrets I like lol. All the years I've been using throw nets I've never heard that. So thank you for sharing that. The reels are still doing good. I'm liking them more and more each day.

Great video and informative, I wonder if you might have done better with a suspended setup.. what's your take on that..
@mickaburkhart144 ай бұрын
Thank you. Well I always have one rod suspended over the boat. It never got touched. But maybe if I had a few more out it may have worked out.

Just wondering why you didn't take shad home and freeze Them?
@mickaburkhart144 ай бұрын
Well I'm not a big fan of frozen bait. If I can catch it fresh then that's what I do. Typically I can do just that. Sometimes that's bit me on the butt 😆. Most times I'm able to find fresh bait. I use to freeze shad and skipjack all the time but noticed a big difference with always having fresh.
