Tourism on Trial: In Egypt security problems have collapsed the tourism industry, one of the cornerstones of its economy. As radical Islamists push for strict regulations on tourists, Egypt's population is struggling.

"Before the revolution, we used to get ten buses here every hour," a stall keeper sighs. The lack of tourist business has afflicted over 3.5 million people who depend on the traffic for their income. But while they had hoped that the end of the revolution would bring tourists back, there is now another threat looming on the horizon.
It may sound bizarre, but the radical Islamist Salafists believe that tourists should only be able to see the pyramids through a veil of wax, arguing "there is a religious decree against keeping them as they are". Unfortunately for the tourist industry, they hold 25% of the seats in the new democratically elected parliament. Under the Salafists public displays of affection would also be banned, as would men and women swimming together. In fact, their decrees would probably force Egypt's most famous beach resort, Sharm El Sheik, to close down. But as tour operator Abdis Salaam says, those in the industry are braced for a fight: "We will stand up against them. We are prepared to create a new revolution if our livelihood is affected."

Its not just Muslims either , all the ones in charge don't give a toss for the common folk and are just concerned with keeping their snouts in the expenses trough ( or crib if you're Muslim or Jew I suppose ) .Religion has a lot to answer for and it keeps dragging us all backwards with the clerics desperate need to hold onto power through fear and superstition .

A friend of mine, a world traveler, went to Egypt 5 years ago. Walking WITH HER HUSBAND, arms covered with a long shirt, she felt such hostility in the stares of the Egyptian men directed at her, all she wanted to do was go back to the hotel. She said they really seem to hate women over there.

I just came back from Egypt. It’s selfish but it’s actually a good time to visit because there are hardly any tourists and the sights aren’t crowded at all. The only bad thing is the hassling from people selling stuff is more intense because they have fewer tourists to harass.

It's a pity, Egypt is a country with so much potential. Excellent weather, remarkable ancient relics, good amount of water from the nile to support high populations, amazing beaches, the gem of Africa and yet it's still closed off. Sucks for the youth, they have so much ambition to open up their country to the world yet the old religious folks won't have it.

Being a fan of the National Geographic documentaries about Ancient Egypt, I've been to that country thrice. The first two trips were great but my last time there I saw these Islamists harassing some Coptic females and I was even heckled by a man who looks like a cleric just for having coffee with an Egyptian girl. I was shocked. It was a facet of Egypt that I never knew about. I've been to that beach on my first visit and I've met and mingle with Egyptian men and women, they didn't come to me as backward folks but modern and fun loving ones. But nowadays, based on my last trip, things have changed. I'm not planning on visiting anytime soon.

You let one experience tarnish and ruin your view of all of Egypt and its people. As you stated you've had many good times there too. You had coffee with an Egyptian girl and chose to focus on the person who reacted negatively rather than the Egyptian who treated you normally. There's bad people everywhere, non Muslims included. Non Muslim countries included. I feel like the comment section is strife of people with irrational judgements and fears.

A Sphinx is still a Sphinx whether you pour syrup or wax on it. If those guys think pouring wax over the Sphinx makes it halal... they are so sadly mistaken because wax does not cover "sin", especially if it's clear wax. People are such great liars and fantastic at adapting the environment to suit their needs. And religion is no different. It's man-made and subject to our whims and fancies.

As a muslim woman I would never visit Egypt because of the lack of respect for women. The fact the men in Egypt feels no shame about cat calling and rape. It's not just uncovered but even women in hijab who are treated badly.

I would travel every year to Egypt because Ancient Egypt is the origin of all religions. All our spiritual beliefs and life are shaped because of the ancestors and culture of the Pharaohs Kingdom. But if you travel there you can get the head chopped for nothing, one more in the list of meaningless kills. So...maybe in next life i will be able to travel there.

Egypt is a beautiful ancient country with amazing places to visit and things to do. Unfortunately Egypt's problem is the inherent belief with many locals that the tourists owe the populous. Been once, seen enough. How can you travel somewhere a large part of the population will only make you feel unwelcome if your not giving them money?!

This is six years out of date isn’t it? I went to Egypt in Feb and March this year (2018). Cairo, Alexandria, and Luxor, and many small villages. Tourism seemed slow, but people are coming back. The exchange rate is ridiculously in favor of tourists. $1 is good for £E17. Egypt is beautiful. The sites are phenomenal. The people were lovely and very friendly, nobody cared what my beliefs were. They were happy to have tourists. I can’t wait to go back.

You have to be honest here, if it wasn't for the pyramids, who would actually go to Egypt? The world is a big place with thousands of tourist attractions, why spend hard earned cash going to a place where a good percentage of the people claim to hate you? Why go to a place where you run the risk of attack? I'm not saying this will happen but why take that chance? The constant badgering at the markets is a pain in the arse as well. Tourists travel, but to somewhere they can relax, not to where you may get shot on the beach. It's just not worth it.

I travelled to Egypt in 2014 and I had an incredible time, mostly because there were no tourists. No lines, great photos, ease of choice in what we wanted to do. But it seemed very bleak for the tour operators, those selling trinkets and goods, etc. I feel really sorry for them, to be honest. Egypt is still the first place I would send anyone with even a mild interest in history. It's phenomenal.

Safer is not safe. I went to India and was told that it was so dangerous and my wife and I didn't have any issues. Egypt has the pyramids which can't be seen anywhere else. Not really any country is safe. I mean France has had more attacks than any other country. USA has been hit and UK. So you can stay inside and never go out but the moment you go out there are risks. Getting killed on the way to the airport is higher than travelling to Egypt. Stay away from the churches and your even safer.

I went there earlier this year and found it a very enjoyable and pleasant experience. There wasn't a single time when I felt unsafe. Yes there were terrorist attacks there but they've moved on. These risks are unfortunately everywhere these days and letting fear control you will really limit the wonderful experiences you can have.

John Hylton interesting you say that. Perhaps you are right. I have lived in the UK my entire life & I have travelled to many different countries. Often (psychologically) I have felt safer in predominantly Muslim countries purely because I wear a headscarf and I don't feel/look like a minority. Admittedly in Egypt I was mistaken for an Egyptian or at least an Arab on a few occasions (I'm not). When I have travelled to Eastern Europe, for example Croatia or Serbia I have felt a greater need to be more careful & alert because I am a minority in those countries and also because of the history that places like Bosnia has had with Muslims. I subconsciously feel more judged, stared at and intimidated for some reason because I know that the indigenous people probably have limited knowledge about Muslims and most of it is probably based on what they've seen in the media. On the other hand, I do believe in white privilege. I have never travelled anywhere alone because I wouldn't feel safe (regardless of the country). A) because I am a female b) because I am brown c) because I am Muslim and it is visible (headscarf). I know that white people are treated like stars in South Asian and African countries. They seem to have more respect and a grand welcome wherever they go (i.e. random people wanting to take pictures with them etc). They are more stared at but it's out of curiosity and awe rather rather than anything negative. Also if a white person goes missing/dies on holiday or in foreign land, western countries are more active and involved in investigating. Citizens living in a western country have that advantage/privilege (me included). I feel like white people are more confident in travelling alone perhaps because they feel safer. In Istanbul I even met a white American woman who couch surfed.

I'm an Egyptian Coptic Christian and I am sooo proud and blessed .. I live peacefully in my town.. I do wear my cross and that doesn't cause me that much inconvenience.. bad people exist everywhere and racists too.. but I can't say it's a daily struggle.. my country will always be a great one and I condemn every hateful thing that's been thrown at it in those comments.. goes to show how tolerant and loving you all are .. if you don't consider coming back to Egypt then it's great cause you're not welcome anyway..You have to respect Egypt and Egyptians in order to have access to be received in the Country of a 7000 years civilisation before the world knew what civilisation looked like..LONG LIVE EGYPT

Audrey O`Callaghan waow!!! So you know my Egypt and fully understand why I love it that much!! We could not go through with the revolution only because it was the reason why those ugly radicalists came to the surface... on the 30th of June 2013 we as a nation through them off and regained our country the ugly faced one you see in this video is probably behind bars right now .. Egypt is back to what it's been..all is not perfect but we do get along really well like we always did before those ugly bearded monsters came out of their hiding after the 25th doomed revolution..anyway I am so touched it brought tears to my eyes to read what you wrote about my country and this is still so true.. I live in Alexandria and get to see the beautiful Mediterranean sea every day and think to myself I live in a beautiful city in an amazing country no matter what... Thank you so much and sorry if I did seem a little unfriendly..I m just a very proud and patriotic Coptic egyptian and sorry for misspelling Feroes it's just how I thought it was written in English😄😄
