One fun tech with Volrath's Shapeshifter is that if there's a creature in your yard, you get the etb when you cast the Shapeshifter. It wasn't the most optimal play, but the casual in me enjoyed casting a Shapeshifter with Hypnox as the top card in my yard when I played Full English Breakfast in Premodern. I get the Hypnox etb of exiling my opponent's hand, and then as soon as the shapeshifter becomes not Hypnox, their hand is gone forever.

I would definitely consider adding: Lord of the Forsaken (4{C}2{B}) 6/6 Flying, Trample Demon | {B}, Sacrifice a Creature: Target player mills 3 cards. | Pay 1 Life: Add {C} to your mana pool. Spend only to cast a spell from your graveyard. Just nice all around. Good creature to shapeshift into. Let's you self mill yourself for a few targets and pay life to hold that mana and cast those creatures you just created.

I played against a deck similar to this concept at my LGS. He ran the partner pair of Sidar Kondo and Tormod. He didn't even cast his commanders the entire game but it was a knight tribal deck with shapeshifter in Abzan colors based around Haakon. He discarded a Filth into his graveyard while he had Urborg out, making all of his creatures unblockable through swampwalk. He repeatedly crib swapped my Korvold and controlled the rest of the board with it. He eventually played a Mirror Entity and pumped his entire board up to like 10/10 double strikers and killed the entire table at once. Was honestly one of the most interesting and novel deck ideas I've lost to in a long time, had to give the guy credit for that.

I just built a ramos deck that's split card tribal. 24 cards are split cards. It's not particularly good at anything, but, it can fo absolutely everything. It's very fun to always have an answer

This deck is an excellent home for Krovikan Horror(Horror Spirit)(2/2): At the beginning of the end step, if Krovikan Horror is in your graveyard with a creature card directly above it, you may return Krovikan Horror to your hand. 1, Sacrifice a creature: Krovikan Horror deals 1 damage to any target.

I did saw this idea on one of your jank deck videos. I do use volrath's and the torture in my Kamiz deck. Since it is a 0/1 you can always give it double strike and turn it into something bigger before damage, or you can turn it into Medomai and take an extra turn out of nowhere.

Ashes of the fallen is a good way for Haakon to do his thing Also Conspiracy I'm slowly gathering cards for Haakon as the commander, because I am a mad lad Also kicking around putting him into a Muldrotha deck with ashes of the fallen (if anything should happen to the ashes, Muldrotha can recast it) - the deck is already going to feature Nettling Imp and Maddening Imp. Edit: Dryad Arbor, Tortured Existence, Bone Miser. GO!

​@@Vektor480 How so? It gives all of your creature cards in the graveyard the chosen type (knight in this case) The only condition for Haakon is that the card in the graveyard has the type knight, once cast it doesn't matter if the card suddenly loses it.

@@markcahalan5698 It used to work with his original wording, but they errata'd it to be "...you may cast knight SPELLS from your graveyard." So you attempt to cast a creature that's not originally a knight, it goes to the stack before it's finished casting, which Ashes of the Fallen doesn't see anymore, reverting its creature type to normal. Pretty lame interaction if you ask me. Was one of my favorite cards in my Haakon deck before I realized they changed the wording of his ability. Though I still have it in mine and ask my playgroup if it's alright. They usually say it's alright since I'm playing Haakon as my commander and need all the help I can get lol.

I absolutely love Volrath’s Shapeshifter. I have it as a win condition in my Muldrotha deck, and it does so many things. With a Gravebreaker Lamia in your graveyard, for example, play the shapeshifter to get the lamia’s etb, and the shapeshifter becomes whatever you search.

I love this deck idea and plan to build it as well, I like to think of it as the T1000 shapeshifter from Terminator 2 based on how lethal it could be from Inkwell Leviathan protection into Plage the Untouchable or even infect with Skittles maybe. Would you consider Rona, Herald of Invasion (MOM) or Likeness Looter (WOE) a better or alternative commanders from Vohar, Vodalian Desecrator? Curious on which one better fits the synergy of the deck.

I love Haakon. He goes in my Syr Konrad deck and he allows for an infinte combo with any knight and a mana altar. Cast a knight from the graveyard, Syr Konrad deals damage to each opponent, use Ashnod's/phyrexian altar to sac the knight, use that mana to cast the knight again, repeat.

Built a Raffine (esper) deck around finding Haakon following your deck idea. Connive works really good when you want to be chucking knights in the graveyard, and can be a wincon on its own. I also run Maskwood Nexus, Ashes of the Fallen, Arcane Adaptation and Conspiracy to turn all into knights and white helps with Pull from Eternity and cool knights. Thanks for the cool ideas! :)

This feels like a lot of my raffine deck was read back to me lol. I added a lot of creatures that can bring themselves back to the battlefield in that deck though. I also like filth inbdiscard black decks too. Surprising how many games you get to swampwalk at least one player.

Jank is where it's at. I love running super janky or flavorful decks but slipping in a couple of insta-combos. When more competitive or pure combo players get SMOKED on the 2nd or 3rd turn with a lucky Yargle draw it's really the most satisfying feeling there is. You'd be surprised how well an Ihsan's shade white color-hate theme does in large groups. Lol

I used to play a vintageish haakon deck before commander was a thing. And one card that i love with the haakon nameless inversion combo is Door of destiny. Obviously its important to say that it Was a knight tribal deck but still really enjoyable. Anorher card to consider null brooch. Keep doing your great work!!!!

This might be spreading it a little thin, but what about Runo Stromkirk? Between the Changelings, Maskwood, and Shapeshifter it wouldn't be too terribly hard to meet his requirements for the double tokens, and we already want a bunch of high mana value creatures in the deck. We don't actually have to cast them for him, so the core of the deck could remain unchanged. Idunno, maybe I'm reaching because I've wanted to make my Cthulhu deck since Runo was released lol

I've been building a really similar deck with Vohar / Volrath's Shapeshifter and found Burning Rune Demon to be a good include, especially if you have Tortured Existence out. Phyrexian Dreadnought is also a great consideration if you can afford the $100 price.

Nice video as always ! It seems to me that the "copy text" ability of the volrath's shapeshifer does not change power and toughness. Then you would need to increase power to at least one to deal combat damage to a player with the phage ability. If you do so with an instant, the problem is that the instant will be the top card of the graveyard... Am I wrong ?

Volrath's Shapeshifter becomes a copy of the card with its ability. When a card becomes a copy it copies everything written on the card (type, cmc, textbox, p/t).

I literally just made a Deck using volrath's shapeshifter but it is more of sacrifice reanimate type deck with lots of graveyard and deck manipulation. I also am using Cepholid illusionist as a win condition.

I want to make an Offspring's revenge/dollhouse of horror deck with a little combo with pull from eternity on isochron scepter Cadric, Soul Kindler and anointed procession. To get a bunch of high value legendary creatures. The problem is I can't find a good Mardu commander for the deck.

I'm not sure which deck I've tried to build most. It's either a deck where you deal a bunch of damage to everything but you have protection or whatever on your creatures, essentially making board wipes tribal into one sided board wipes tribal OR it could be the Experience Counter tribal. I tried it in Mardu and in WUBRG, but I might again now that Mardu has another experience counter generator that just came out.

the new sidar jabari from commander 2023 would be absolutely disgusting as a commander for this deck and give you access to some of the powerful white knights, though that would mean you would lose the ability to discard with your commander at instant speed as opposed to only in combat but might be an interesting thing to build around

I have a question regarding an interaction that I'm hoping someone can clear up. I'd like to know if the interaction between Stonebrow, Krosan Hero and Wulfgar of Icewind Dale would give each creature with trample a +2/+2 twice or just once. I'm not sure if Krosan gives each creature a triggered ability that would trigger from Wulfgar, or if the triggered ability is Stonebrow's. Would a Battlemage's Bracers placed on Stonebrow cause his ability to trigger twice or would it have to go on the attacking creature or would it work at all on any of them.

Another thing to consider with Volrath's Shapeshifter is infect. You can turn the Shapeshifter into a vector asp or pestillent souleater, give it infect and then turn it into a Phyrexian Dreadnought or something else with 10+ power.

Isn't there a rule in Magic now where you can literally just reorder your graveyard whenever? Im pretty sure thats a thing, like you wouldn't necessarily HAVE to have the card be on top of the grave through card effects, just mill it and set the card you want on top. Which like sounds like Volrath's Shapeshifter is kind of busted, but a headache when the peeps across the table will say your a cheater when you very much are not cheating

That rule is for formats with no cards that care about the order of your graveyard. Commander uses all cards through magic history, so that rule does not apply.

A player can examine the cards in any graveyard at any time but normally can't change their order. Additional rules applying to sanctioned tournaments may allow a player to change the order of cards in his or her graveyard. And from the magic tournament rules: 3.14 Graveyard Order In formats involving only cards from Urza’s Saga™ and later, players may change the order of their graveyard at any time. A player may not change the order of an opponent’s graveyard. I got this from a reddit post, so you might want to double check it reading the actual rules book or something.

Lyzolda is only at the beginning of the video to mention a separate deck of his. He said that's the *commander he's built the most, but the Dimir deck described in this video is the *idea (discard archetype or "shell") that he's built the most. I am definitely warming up to trying to build a shell of a deck that can swap out commanders without too much fiddling, it's a fun deck building strategy.
