Getting ready to DIY herringbone as part of a fireplace makeover. The tips on centering, and especially for finding the midpoint of the sheet (I absolutely would have just assumed the tip of the tile), was worth the cost of admission. I have much more confidence I can make this look good. Thanks for taking the time to create this content.

Thanks for the instructional video. I’ve done lots of tile but first time doing herringbone so wanted to see what I could learn that would help. I think the most important parts of the video are doing a dry layout first as that is always the same even with square or rectangular tile. The other important part was the focal point. It’s easy when you are just splitting a space in half but when the focal point is not center of an area, as in a stove mounted left or right of the center of a countertop. Working from the center of that spot where someone would stand frequently and be looking directly forward you’d want to see that center line of the tile. I’ll add that ceramic and porcelain tile often get chipped along the edge. Use a rubbing stone to polish the cut edge and that will reduce the visibility of the chips. You’ll find those where the tile tools are in most hardware stores. Anyhow, good video.

So glad the video was helpful 🙌. Thanks for your input, it's good to know what tips were most helpful. And yes, hundred percent agree with you on stoning the tile edges. I keep a rubbing stone on hand, but I usually use a polishing pad on an adjustable speed grinder 👍. Seems to work faster and smoother....I demonstrate it in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGjYi31peallp7c if you wanted to check it out👌

Solid video. One question though. What is the minimum wet tile saw one could use to cut these properly? I tried with a very basic wet tile saw and that didn't work!
@HowToTileLikeaPro3 ай бұрын
Great question. I would highly recommend the saw I'm using in the video. It's the 7" Rigid saw from Home Depot. It's small, lightweight, and doesn't cost too much. I think I bought mine on sale for $300. It can handle most projects. If you are only tiling a small project, Home Depot does rent out tile saws as well👍

Love this video! Question though… how do you cut herringbone tile around outlets?
@HowToTileLikeaPro Жыл бұрын
The easiest way is, once you find out which small tiles are going to go around the outlets...separate them from the sheet, then you can individually mark, cut, and install them👍

This is the best video I’ve seen on the herring bone tiles! Thank you! How do you pick the focal point? I have an oven on this wall and the end comes out into the room (it’s an L shaped wall) Would you line up the oven or the end so it ends perfectly? Also I’ve heart some who say start in the corner?
@HowToTileLikeaPro2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that! 🙌 The best rule of thumb is to always center above the oven👍. The end and corner can have a cut, but above the stove should be centered 👌

Could you provide tips on installing tile over a humpy floor. 3/8 inch gaps with 12x24 large format porcelain tile. We dry fit and it looks fine, but we know that we need to be careful and get it right the first time
@HowToTileLikeaPro11 ай бұрын
Yes, if the floor is humpy, it's best to grind the high spots or fill the low spots to make it flat👍

@@HowToTileLikeaPro we did some.... Then we tiled over the ditra using a level and caliper to check for lippage before applying the wedges+the clips that they go into. We made the floor level and flat by adding however much mortar it required to get them level and flat. We had a few mistakes and had to smash a few to redo them. They came out fine and were VERY difficult to smash. We will level the floor using a 50 gallon drum next time we have a large area to level, but I think this will work well

Question: on the herringbone mosaic sheets, do you back butter the sheets? Thanks for your videos, Tile Pro! Your other video, backer-board for the saw bed when cutting mosaic sheets... what a great tip!
@HowToTileLikeaPro2 жыл бұрын
Grateful your getting value from my videos🙌🙌. And no, you don't need to back butter small sheet mounted tiles, as long as your thinset is fresh & tacky. Back buttering the sheets will make it more likely to get thinset in the joints, which would create alot more work👍. 1/4 inch trowel depth usually works best for this thickness of herringbone 💯
@jefandbac70602 жыл бұрын
@@HowToTileLikeaPro Had good luck today with my 3/16" V-notch trowel, no back butter because you're right, it makes a mess. My herringbone mosaic sheets are 5/16'" thick (stone) and approximately 12" x 15" sized sheets. Would I be better off going up to a 1/4" notched or v-notch trowel? Watching more of your videos, they're great. I'd love to see a video about basics, like how to manage the trowel, loading it with thin set, how to keep a clean and organized workspace. Seems like I'm wearing more thin set than I can get onto the backer board! 🙂Thanks again for the videos, they're clean, clear and well presented.
@HowToTileLikeaPro2 жыл бұрын
@@jefandbac7060 the 3/16 V notch is great too, I'd stick with that one. You can always check your tile to make sure you're getting good coverage👌. Thanks for the idea for a basics video, I'll put that in my schedule 👍💯

@@HowToTileLikeaPro Once I start at the center-line of the main focal point, do I keep chasing the pattern around corners, or, do I restart at the center of each wall? I've got 6 walls, pattern should match in the corners, yes? thanks Tile Pro!
@HowToTileLikeaPro2 жыл бұрын
@@jefandbac7060 yes, it's always nice to match the corners. It does get tricky though if you have 2 different focal points like on this Backsplash. One wall had the range hood area as a focal point, the other wall had a window as a focal point. I was able to center both, and fold the corners... but sometimes it doesn't work out like that. So you kinda gotta play with it, there's 2 ways to center, so center it the way it benefits both walls👌 Hope that makes sense 🙏😁

"When marking the tile I like to measure two points and draw a line for accuracy. This is vital if the area you're tiling isn't plumb or level." Ummm....draw a line.....where? I watched this part over and over and even having a visual available I STILL have no idea what you're talking about.
@HowToTileLikeaPro11 күн бұрын
@lana85290309 I appreciate your question and desire for understanding 👍. The line that you would draw depends on the cut you're making. @ 2:55 in the video, I show how to measure from your surface to the deepest point of the tile. To get your 2 points, measure the top part of the tile and the bottom part of the tile. These 2 measurements are you're 2 points to draw your line. Basically, what I'm saying is sometimes the wall you're cutting to is out of plumb, for example... it may be 5 inches from your tile to the wall at the top, and the bottom width may be 5 1/4 inches, so you'd want to check before you cut to make that angle. I hope this makes sense... let me know if it does👍
