When I got to the panel when Norman finally caught up to Ruby, I was genuinely shocked by how incredible it was. I have no idea why, but Kusaka and Yamamoto really came together to make that man Him for some reason. And when all of Hoenn was being ripped apart, he was out there riding Rayquaza into the fray like a boss? This arc was different.

Winona got a crazy glow up in the manga, she's the only one to beat Sapphire on her first try and leads the leaders association. Having her and Sapphire parallel Wallace's mentorship of Ruby is clever

Her and Wallace's relationship is also really interesting. He turned down the Champion position to be able to spend more time with her as a fellow gym leader but then she got upset because she KNOWS he's better and should be at a higher rank. I genuinely want a proper conclusion to their story.

For real, one of the cooler aspects of the Manga is how they characterise all the gym leaders giving some of them vastly different personalities to their game or anime counterparts, and even changing up how important each one is. It’s never just that the eighth gym leader is the best, there’s always a middle ranked leader who gets greater prominence. In this case Winona is the leader of all the gym leaders, and Norman is referenced as the strongest (despite being 6th and 5th in the games respectively.) It's no coincidence that the Manga versions of Erika, Pryce and Winona are my favourite versions of those characters.

I love how this arc deals with bigger stakes and consequences. Like we see Kyogre and groudon actually destroy hoenn and kill many people. It also has a great love story arc between ruby and sapphire.

I'm so glad to see this video today. The Ruby-Sapphire arc has always been my top fave from Adventures. And rewatching this, I was reminded just how much of a lovable, chaotic duo Ruby and Sapphire were! Really great video! I can't wait until we get to the DPPt chapter!

The 4th chapter is the pinnacle of the whole Adventures manga in my opinion...the amount character development and complexity of all the side stories (like with Maryann and Tyler), combined with the shipping at the end...just wonderful storytelling

Great summary once again! I'm more than a week late to comment, but I really enjoyed this summary. The RS arc is a fan favorite for a reason, and it's also the arc where we start seeing Yamamoto's style shine through after he had tried emulating Mato's style during the last half of GSC. It was really fun reading this arc and seeing essentially two separate journeys play out for most of the arc, which I think really helps with fleshing out each character when not in proximity to each other. interestingly, we won't get another arc where the protagonists travel on separate journey's for most of the arc until the current SV arc...like, as of now, Scarlet and Violet have not formally met at all, and I'm really enjoying it. We don't get a lot of development on Sapphire's end, since she seems pretty well rounded and her only real issues seems to deal with trusting Ruby specifically, but she is a fun character to follow. She comes of as a bit strange to the people that meet her, but she has excellent intuition and is willing to help out others even if it does slow her down. She loves her home and the people and Pokemon that inhabit it, so of course she'll give it her all when it comes to protecting it. She also knows when to let others take the reigns if she feels that they're better suited for it. It does frustrate her, but she also understands. I wish we could have seen more development on her end, and just more of Sapphire in general since I think she's cool. Still, at least we got to see Ruby's journey juxtaposed with her own. And speaking of Ruby, boy howdy is this boy a mess and a half, and he sure was entertaining to see grow as a person. He is unabashedly selfish in most scenarios because he doesn't want to involve himself in conflict, since that would mean going back into his battling habits that he wished to get away from, even though his actions would put others in danger. He has high expectations for the person he wants to become, but fails to see that by pushing himself towards that goal, he was only hurting himself, his pokemon, and the others around him, most notably Sapphire and FeeFee. The Salamence attack may have traumatized both Ruby and Sapphire, but Ruby clearly didn't handle it nearly as well as Sapphire (which I mean, she still has trauma related to that attack which is what leads her into throwing herself into situations to help others even if she is out of her league, but at least she had a supportive father...) Seeing him reconcile the part of him that wants to become a great Coordinator and the part of himself that is an ace at battling so that he can let go of his selfish tendencies and actually help others was awesome to experience. It's also cool to see how the people he encountered on his journey also slowly helped push him to become a better person; from Captain Briney giving him the information about Relicanth that he'll use later when getting to the Seafloor Cavern, to the Swimmer insisting he keep FeeFee because he could see that FeeFee would be loyal to him, to Wallace not only coaching him on contests but also really tearing into him for his selfish behavior. He's still a frustrating person (as we'll see play out in ORAS...oh boy...), but has incredible character development in this arc. There's so much to analyze about Ruby alone, but that would take a while to do. He needs to be studied under a microscope. Also, I get why people really wanted Wally to be the official third Hoenn DexHolder, but I'm still glad we got Emerald. I'll save that discussion for later though. I just like Wally. :3 Great work again, and I'm looking forward to both your FRLG summary and Emerald summary. Enjoy the shorter arcs while you can before jumping into the Sinnoh arcs.

Pokemon Adventures truly is the pokemon equivalent of the Street Fighter comics by UDON. The lore is there but the changes from the games ends up making it more unique since the games themselves don't focus too much on the story or are even consistently interconnected with each other aside from Gen 1&2. I like Emerald and Wally. The issue with both characters is that they just don't interact with anyone else for the most part so you don't get to see any cool dynamics in the protag group like you do with the Gen 1/Gen 2 cast.

I remember casually finding the second volume of this arc at a news stand a few months ago. Since this march I think the manga is being distributed here at news stands and although I missed the Kanto and Johto arcs I decided not to miss the opportunity and bought that volume without a second thought. I quite enjoyed reading it and got myself the following chapters whenever a new volume released, and even managed to get the first volume of the hoenn arc which I had missed by just one week. Although I felt the finale of this particular arc was rushed with a confusing deus ex machina I am really glad I got the chance to read this story and I'm currently through the 4th volume of the sinnoh arc. I still haven't got my hands of the first 3 parts of the adventure manga but I'll get those too should I ever afford to do so.

This arc was the first I read in the Pokémon Adventures series, and I thought that it was an absolutely fantastic introduction. It not only had a great story and characters, but it also got me used to the trend of manga being unable to stick the landing. Seriously, the final battle lasting for thirty days with a training arc in the middle of it, only to be won in the end by one of the main characters having a legendary Pokémon this whole time that they never talked about and it's never explained how it got there? ... Not good. But at least the stuff leading up to the ending was great. The Gen 3 gym leaders were never as fleshed out as they were in this manga, and all of them had extremely memorable personalities that I wish other adaptations (like the remakes) would have drawn from. Ruby and Sapphire were also really good and really flawed characters that fit together so well. Plus, I really liked how even minor characters, like that swimmer, got their chance to shine. I actually don't remember too well what happened in the FireRed/LeafGreen and Emerald arcs, so I'm looking forward to your recap videos of those.
