This iceberg was a huge endeavor, definitely the most effort I've put into a single project yet. Huge thanks to everybody who helped in any way! Now you know the darkest depths of conlanging online. Is there more out there? Oh yeah totally, feel free to make your own icebergs if you want to go even more in-depth. My job here is done.

gotta say, watching through both parts of this was an experience, with how many of these entries are things that are directly connected to my own work. some important notes (in no particular order)! - jack eisenmann's works had a small but extant following before being featured on conlang critic; his video outlining vötgil was decently popular for a conlang showcase video at the time - an important step in the #RjienrlweyChallenge is step three: "do not actually do this". everyone who posted a video of themselves saying rjienrlwey failed the challenge - it's somewhat irresponsible, I think, to present "ghoti" in a fully uncritical way; english spelling is a little weird, but it's not THAT weird, and any english speaker can intuitively understand that no, it's not actually consistent with english spelling to spell "fish" as (but "pfysche" works just fine!) - come on you can't just talk about anthony mccarthy and the New radio shows? thread without talking about the SONGS smh

My problem with the ghoti joke is that it simply ignores the fact english ortography is context sensitive, it really matters what is before and after each letter or group of letters. I started thinking about context sensitivity in ortography when I explained to somebody what is the REALLY hard part of learning to read Japanese.

kay(f)bop(t) aside from the hats has a lot of amazing features, including but not limited to: - the bimanual click (aka clap) and the faciomanual click (aka facepalm) are phonemes - declensions for number are finite/infinite as opposed to singular/plural - there is declension for awesomeness, resulting in the _epic, awesomic, coolic, okayic, mehic,_ and _submehic_ grammatical cases

The Old Irish section didn't even mention the insane levels of verb suppletion (I don't blame you) which I will actually defend because it gives me confidence to add that type of suppletion to my own languages as a way to fake irregularity
@talideon
@talideon 8 ай бұрын
Yup! That's a much more cursed part of the language. Actually, count the verbal complex too: that's why the etymology of Irish verbs can be so hard to figure out. Old Irish phonology and orthography are nowhere near as cursed as the segment makes out, even if they're not simple. Even today, Irish orthography is two tonnes of phonology stuffed into the one tonne bag that is the Latin alphabet, and it still makes more sense than English orthography.

Wouldn't the first person singular exclusive pronoun be something used by someone dissociating without an alter? If they're performing tasks during dissociation, and there's no alter fronting for a system because the brain is literally devoid of self-awareness at the moment, then would that not be "I, without myself, did a task"?

My favorite conlang: *Plukanian language:* Koo - All words, with the following exceptions: Kyu (pronounced "kyew") - any profanity Ketseh (pronounced "keh-tseh", emphasis on the second syllable) - matches (or, rather, the chemicals ordinarily used on Earth for match heads) Chatl - a currency unit Tsak - a small bell worn on the nose to indicate the low social status of the wearer Tentura and Antitentura - two opposite parts of the Universe. Some planets and galaxies exist in Tentura (including Earth, number 013 in the Tentura, seventh in Spiral) and some in Antitentura Pepelats - an interplanetary spacecraft (from the Georgian პეპელა p’ep’ela, "butterfly") Tsapa - a component for different machines. A "big tsapa" is a very important component for the pepelats. A "small tsapa" is a component for the gravitsapa; without the small tsapa, a gravitsapa will not work. Tsapa is similar to a very rusty screwnut Gravitsapa - a component for the pepelats which allows intergalactic travel (from "gravity" + "tsapa") Tranklucator - a weapon Visator - compact device, detects difference between Patsaks and Chatlanians Kappa - a button or lever Luts - the fuel used by the pepelats, it is made of water Chatlanin - being with a high social status (detected as "orange" on a Visator) Patsak - being with a low social status (detected as "green" on a Visator) Ecilop - a policeman ("police" spoken backwards) Etsikh - a box for prisoners; also the imprisonment in such box (as a penalty); also "the Etsikh" is a jail with many such boxes ("Etsikh" is from the Georgian ციხე tsikhe, "prison"). "Etsikh with nails" is a hard punishment. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kin-dza-dza!

I mean traditional Welsh numerals are cool and all, but they've got nothing on Hindustani. OK, sure, Hindustani uses boring old base ten - but all the numbers from 1 to 100 are essentially irregular! And as far as I know, there's no alternative regularised system! And like 750 million people use this language on a daily basis! And somehow people don't talk about this! (Oh and by the way there's separate root words for 1.5 and 2.5, but that's actually practical so I think it can be ignored for now.)

I'm not that active of a member of the community (I watch conlanging youtube a lot, but I'm not on reddit or LCS), and I've only been watching your channel for a couple of days, but this was exactly the level of deep dive that I needed! I really appreciate this explanation, because I remember seeing this iceberg just as a picture some time ago and thinking: "well, yeah, I know some of these things, but I'm definitely not included enough to get most of it". And these two videos are so great, you really went so far to provide so much information both about actual "useful" things to know and memes, which is also so important for a community. Thank you!

I still can never believe that my native language language SENĆOŦEN ( 48:41 ) is seen as so cursed, it was created by my great grandfather Dave Elliot with the help of other fluent elders who were alive in the 70s and 80s. it was written in this way to show distinction from modern English using the limitations of a typewriter. This orthography is still new but I’ve grown up with it as being no different from how French and Spanish had different ways of using Latin characters. We have very few fluent speakers but this system has been effective in helping our dying language be learnt
@JoXnCostello
@JoXnCostello 6 ай бұрын
I was going to say, it’s a little cheap to make fun of SENĆOŦEN orthography without going into the historical reasons for why it is the way it is. It’s basically one guy trying to give his mother tongue an orthography you can type on an English typewriter, in the era before Unicode. So, underlines and strikethroughs are phonemic because English typewriters don’t come with a bunch of fancy diacritics, and everything is capitalized because “caps lock” ≈ shift lock, which made all the diacritics available without having to hit shift. Like @sproutgod1701 says, Dave Elliot’s work was a huge contributing factor to the fact that SENĆOŦEN survived long enough to undergo revitalization efforts. The ALL CAPS affect comes off as strange, but honestly, even that can be mitigated by font choice …

It does seem conlangers have a tendency to just point at things and go "its bad lol" without much objective justification... I can sorta see why some people see it as "cursed" (not that I necessarily agree), but if anything its the kind of "cursed" where I can completely understand why it was made the way it was. On the contrary, an example of something which is cursed in a way which I cannot understand in any capacity would be Poliespo.
