Vincent Damon Furnier aka Alice Cooper, been at it 60 yrs. Quit drinking in the 80's, plays golf everyday including when on tour. Not bad for a kid from Michigan making up and playing this character on stage for all these years. Always has had the best band members, all legends.

Lita Ford covered this song on her album "Stiletto" in 1990. She kept the same feel but at the same time made it unmistakably her sound. There's an unconfirmed story going around that Alice Cooper heard her perform it one night at a concert, and later, when he saw her backstage, said, "That's your song now."

he is awesome live. Once in around 2004 or so he played a show in my city. It was a free concert, outdoors, and anyone could go. So we went and saw him and the he was meeting and just talking to everyone afterward too. He’s really nice, and personable and just normal and nothing like his stage persona in real life at all.

I’ve been listening to this album since it came out and I love it. It’s only recently though that I’ve come to understand the meaning behind the song in context of the album. I’ve always thought of this as a man singing about his woman or women in general, but it’s actually seen through the eyes of a child - I never realized that. The whole album is fantastic. And some of his biggest hits are ballads - “You and Me”, “How You Gonna See Me Now?”, “I Never Cry”, to name a few.
@weshoward45020 сағат бұрын
I have a slightly different interpretation of the album, but I totally agree this is part of the larger story, which seems to get overlooked a lot

I always thought that Alice's willingness to portray himself as the monster by changing the lyrics to first-person in this video was courageous in a way. Doing so increases (I think) the emotional impact of the performance. Fyi, Alice has released a bunch of live concert videos over the years, but i think this one (Alice Cooper Trashes The World) is my favorite. I especially like the part where Alice, dressed in typical 80s rocker garb, is dragged off the stage, and the makeup and stuff are forcibly added to him before shoving him back on the stage. Good stuff

Alice Cooper has tons of killer songs that you can enjoy as stand-alone stories. But if you REALLY want to enjoy Alice, you need to jump in the deep end headfirst and start listening to full albums. You will find a LOT of his songs are in the context of a larger story line (like this song). I am pretty sure that he has more concept & theme albums than any one else, and some stories carry across multiple albums. He also does a lot of moral story lines. When playing live, this song sets up Alice (the character) as a villain that will eventually pay for his sins.
@jamesdamiano889422 сағат бұрын
YES definitely check out a ton of Alice. So many great songs. If you like ballads like this then there are You And Me and How You Gonna See Me Now are good ones. You really should check out The Ballad If Dwight Fry. He met his wife during his tour for the actual album. She was a dancer and they are still married and is a very loving husband. She and his daughter Calico tour and are in the live shows. He’s a Christian who plays golf and is nothing like his stage persona. If you want more bangers then Hurricane Years, Feed My Frankenstein, and Cold Ethyl. As far as physical abuse against men, have you ever heard of John Wayne Bobbitt. Not to say he was an angel but he got a bad one.

Everytime I've seen Alice back to the 70s, at the end of this song, the girl (his real wife) raises up and cuts his throat or stabs him. A more fitting end. The Ballad of Dwight Fry is a song about him actually being in an insane asylum in a straight jacket. He doesn't make it out because they chop his head off with a guillotine. That's a must see! Thanks for the great reactions.

Some radio stations in the US banned the song because they thought it was about the menstrual cycle although I think Alice was using that as a metaphor for domestic violence as the lyrics tell us Alice in real life is the complete opposite of his stage character and has set up youth centers for art and after he managed to get himself of alcohol abuse to save his marriage has gone on to help other stars with their substance abuse.

I've never heard him sing it in the first person before, it's always the third person. He performed this song to bring light to domestic abuse which in those days was swept under the carpet and not spoken about. He didn't believe it should be a hidden issue, it needed to be out there so that it could be better dealt with.

As a woman I love this song. And I think some men should listen to it very closely. Alice tells whole stories in his concerts. He invented "Alice/Steven", a fictional bad character. "Alice" always has to pay for his bad deeds at the end of a show. But don't confuse Alice Cooper with "Alice", the fictional character. Alice Cooper is one of the nicest guys you can imagine.😄

Alice got so much hate for this song when it came out, "Those" people just looked at the title of the song and ran with it, not that the song was about domestic abuse, as he said here. Another song is by Pat Benatar; Hell is for Children; they ran away with the title and tried to get it banned. But they didn't know it was about child abuse.
