Saudi is a tough one. We haven’t seen anything on this scale ever. I think it will attract players however it will never be as big as the prem or any other European league and it is due to heritage. They can throw as much money as they want but everything but for example the whole English game has loads of history. Same with all other (most) European countries.

Conspiracy theorist here but if Saudi Arabia pull it off and compete even fractionally to European football, could this give the owners and businessmen of the top clubs justification for the super league (and on top of that near control on the best tv/cable deals for locals worth tens of billions) with little opposition from UEFA? For all we know they (such as Perez or the glazers) might be indirectly working hand in hand with Saudi Arabia.

It's quite the insult that 4 South American countries, incuding 2 WC champions were not considered a suidatable place for a WC, but a country that has 0 football culture, where a the average league game has only 6000 fans is considered a suitable place. You bet they will pull anothe Qatar and brig foreign workers to pose as fans, and have slaves die in the middle of the desert building a super stadium. FIFA is what is wrong with football. I wonder where the following WC will be? Maybe Iran or North Korea.

We don't want to see a bunch of boomer greedy players when we make the best players in the world, and the Europeans don't want to see your product because they have the best leagues in the world. The thing is, sad or not, people who aren't directly affected will mostly not care about human rights issues - if they get to see their stars play on the field, it will be all. And since money makes the world spin, I think unless a huge crack or scandal within FIFA's bureaucracy attracts attention, nothing will stop hands shaking below the desk. That's the reality of it I feel. Also, did I just see Ronaldo in Saudi clothing?😂

Hosting World Cup in 2034, in my opinion, is an awful idea for Saudi Arabia. The capital city of Riyadh was also staged the Asian Games that year. This literally breaks the rule made by IOC, as a country couldn't stage 2 major events at the same year. In 2002, South Korea had both World Cups (co-hosted by Japan) and the Asian Games at Busan. I think the Asian Games should be moved to the other country to prevent this issues. Btw, HITC Sevens had already made this video about the 2034 World Cup controversy. You should check it out!

Interesting video, nice one Viz. I'm interested in the sportswashing debate, particularly over the last few days, as I wrote an article on it as part of my uni course. If I post it here it will probably go down as spam, but essentially the Saudis have been doing this over recent years because they've realised that countries are likely to withdraw their funding for oil over more sustainable alternatives. Saudis have seen this trend have therefore splashed the cash they have from the oil, and as a result, get more eyeballs and money in as an alternative revenue stream. That's what could be argued, anyway, Saudis will say it isn't sportswashing and they just like sport. However, the Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman said he will continue to do sportwashing as long as increases his GDP by 1%. I find it an interesting debate, I can see both sides. Cheers for the video, Viz.

i think the sportwashing aspect is seen too much from a western perspective, they aren't doing all of this to be liked by the west. it's about international reputation in general. other parts of the world will pay less attention to the problematic side of all of this and many have non-democratic governments and human rights abuses in their own countries. another aspect is that they do it to please their own population in order to secure their power. the country has many problems and it's economic situation is not like qatars, which is actually a rich country. the saudis have huge unemployment rates among young people and lots of poverty, so there is much potential for unrest. football is a good distraction. the irony of that comment from the prince is that he pretends this would make sense economically. my guess is that the crown-prince experiences some megalomania. their building projects show that very well. most stuff doesn't make sense economically and will most likely never be built or at least not finished. they have a history of this. this league will be similiar, when they realize that it takes time to build something, they might just lose interest or give up. in many ways they now try to copy qatar and UAE, which makes no sense given all the differences what people fail to understand is that saudi-arabia isn't in a good economic position despite having lots of oil money. their problem is that are running out of time. the must transform their economy completely and they can't really afford to waste money and time. one football league isn't a big factor in any country's economy, they will spend billions on creating very few jobs and almost no economiy growth

just one thing. with 48 teams in the world cup , why bother with qualifying for bigger teams ? I’d LOVE to see the Middle East be a larger part of global sports. Locker rooms create loyalty. With their hefty investments, they will also need to attract Westerners. This is far better than a strategy of chaos and conflict or North Korean isolationism. It’s financially obscene, but they DO have A LOT of wealth for such a small population. My best friend is from Iran. He’s cool as shit. His government? Not so cool, but him and his wife didn’t have to escape to come here. He’s free to come and go as he pleases. While infographics says he should have no way out. 🤔

As an African, I obviously see this as a western issue. Especially the whole LGTBQ argument. Every country has the right to govern its own people. No one said the west was right about anything except the west itself. And no one attacks the west on there exploitation of Africa. So if we're going to bring up human right issues in sports, then lets talk about the US, France and the UKs exploitation in Africa with no regards to "human rights". Either that or keep politics out of football.

If this 2034 world cup was about growing the game, I would be for it. I think there are plenty of places to host a good World Cup. Saudi Arabia is not one of these. It is a violent and oppressive state. And the argument that the USA also has issues doesn't track, because while it is a problematic country, nowhere near as bad as the Saudis. We had a lot of German players and officials say that protesting Qatar in 2022 was too late. Now there are 11 years to prevent this World Cup from hosting it and I hope that enough pressure is created to prevent this disgrace from happening.

The funny thing about Westerners when they start talking about human rights in other countries is that they expect the rest of the world to believe that they really care even a slight bit about these people. Talking about the rights of the Saudis and attacking their government in the ways it deals with them, while at the same time keeping silent about a genocide occurring to the same "people" and supporting the state that does it with their tax money, then using their moral superiority to criticize FIFA for its cooperation with Saudi Arabia and Qatar while remaining silent about the reality of wich a Ethnic cleansing state like Israel participation in the UEFA competitions shows the world the peak of hypocrisy. You think pepole care about gay rights or women rights when they wake up in the morning seeing their pepole blown to pieces in TV? A falling societies with no moraly whatsoever preaching the rest of the world on what is right and wrong I mean you can criticize anyone you want, but witnessing such hypocrisy specially in these days is jut disgusting and disgraceful.

It is the result of how we capitulated ourselves to greed. If UEFA can grant membership for despotic Kazakhstan back in 2002 that, by 2023, still imprisons and represses dissidents and flirts with dictators, then we can do nothing when Saudi Arabia won the 2034 bid especially when Saudi Arabia is far more powerful than Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan serves as the playbook to what to be next and we let it to happen, the Central Asian nation is the first example of how modern sportswashing could be. Kazakhstan has used both gas and oil money exploited from the Caspian Sea to bribe and corrupt UEFA members to stay permanently, while caring nothing about football; their shock 2024 Euro qualifying forms is not because they have any long term strategy, but rather pure lucks surprisingly spread out for them, Kazakhstan’s stadiums are majority abysmal and their grassroot structure is poor. Saudi Arabia is aware of it, they saw how Kazakhstan successfully corrupted football, and with the vast oil they have underground, they exploit it. They are also benefited from staying inside the authoritarian AFC (which Kazakhstan should have been), and now Saudi Arabia is having what they wanted. If UEFA wants to redeem, and maybe FIFA need to redeem, we should have done things differently. We should have rejected Kazakhstan’s UEFA membership as the mean to prevent Saudi Arabia from doing the same. It is too late now.

Even La Liga u complain that it's on between Real and Barca if not them it's Atletico Madrid. Abromović made Chelsea a top 6 club in PL, Girona now is a top team in La Liga table. So if your teams keep winning it's ok and laugh but when some clubs get money and start beating your teams it's wrong, it's oil money, oil club. Y'all such hypocrites

Well, if that's their only desire, then why not do so in Africa too and help to grow the sport by investing in it in the CAF region or extremely underfunded AFC nations like in ASEAN, especially since they need it more because Saudi is developed, no nation in Africa is and most in ASEAN aren't either. it’s just insane to me that people are willing to completely look past what saudi arabia is and does solely because they’re wealthy. shows you a lot about people. but all these footballers can go over there and play and get their insane contracts and paydays. but saudi arabia is a country that has had slaves being sold on facebook within the last decade. many wealthy saudis help to fund terrorist groups. many people there do not believe gay people deserve to live, and many are very racist against any non arab. of course many saudis are amazing people who are very friendly and welcoming. but their government and noble class are disturbing enough to merit a check of one’s conscience for doing business with them.
