Really excited to see if that Silkworm can be restored to Moon Patrol, as much as I love Silkworm if that's a dedicated MP cab with the artwork present it feels like the right thing to do. I'm sure Silkworm will be fine in a generic JAMMA.

Yep, 100% agree. Also, "Moon Patrol" is a stone-cold classic, whereas "Silkworm" is...fine.

It just wants the CP sorting out, the Moon Patrol PCB will plug right into the existing harness with an IREM JAMMA adaptor. I'm also very sure the paint can be easily removed. How do I know? I just happened to own it once.

Old arcade addict here. There were a group of guys at my local arcade in the mid-80s who could play Defender, Stargate, Robotron, and Joust for as long as we wanted on 1 credit. The all-time high score table on Defender was full of 999,975 scores. (The highest you can get without the score going back to 0). Rygar, you need to invest a credit or two jumping a lot in most levels, as there are LOTS of hidden "tombstones" that give you all sorts of things. The "iguanas" on the rope levels, if you have the power-ups, you can "bend" your shot. (Shoot it, and then move it around with the joystick while it's in flight). This allows you to shoot up, and then sideways to take out the "iguanas". If you had lived a little longer on that first life and gotten the "Invincibility cross" to complete the set you get a big bonus (I think It's 180,000 points!).

Thanks to Alex and the team! Me and my good friend Dave visited the Arcade archive and Alex and the team were very welcoming. They have such a great variety of different arcades. I played a few of the older titles for the first time and really enjoyed it. The condition of the arcade machines are amazing most of the images on the monitors are breathtaking the videos don't do them justice you have to go and see them for your selfs! Especially the ghosts n goblins which my mate Dave was on most of the night! 1cc getting to level 3 and then drying! cheers Alex I look forward to returning in the very near future and I would highly recommend a visit to anyone has has nostalgia and a love for the arcades! Cheers 🍻

One more Rygar tip I thought of while walking to the store! During the vertical roping section, if you start under the lizards you can actually fire on them without even entering their line of fire. Hold the stick up while firing the disc weapon and (this is the tricky part) let go of the joystick while the disc is in-flight upwards. If done right, this will cause the disc to spend its remaining trajectory in the default direction you're facing (left/right). You'll have to be using the rope-swing to get close enough to actually hit the lizard while doing this. The end result is a partial-up, partial-sideways attack that'll dispose of the lizards at much reduced risk. To a certain extent this technique of changing the disc's direction is also useful during the game's main sections, especially if you have the Sun powerup. Its a useful strat for taking out some of the flying enemies, if the situation calls for it - typically, in crowded situations where you don't have a clean shot at the fliers. The vertical sections are the best place to get used to this weapon behavior anyways! For me, this level of control is a key factor as to why Rygar is such a great game. Hope you didn't swap the game out in frustration already, haha! Its a tough nut for sure.

It will be interesting to see if the Moon Patrol cabinet also has its original art hidden away under the paint. Moon Patrol is another of my favourite games from back in the day and probably the game on my Williams multi that I play the most. Drop Zone was a fantastic game in its own right and Archie will be sorely missed, but I truely appreciate what he was able to create for us. I played Drop Zone first on an Atari 800 at my local retailer and have always enjoyed it as a game. Ghosts and Goblins is so hard, I have never made it past the 2nd stage. I did start to play it some more when I had it in one of my horizontal cabs (on the 19-in-1 horizontal multi). Raiden is one of the more modern games that I have always liked, it is hard and you have to learn the patterns. Playing the home versions can assist with the patterns (PC Engine and Play Station versions only), but neither of them run at the speed/difficulty of a real arcade PCB so you have to condition yourself to the different timing. I can usually make level 3 (as long as I don’t screw up at the end of level boss on level 2), and can make it to level 4 on occasion. Rygar I have never really had the opportunity to play but it looks like quite a decent and entertaining challenge.
@TheArcadeArchive
@TheArcadeArchive Жыл бұрын
I would love to see the art work revealed on that cabinet but silk worm is quite popular in the museum so we will have to swap it back every so often. Raiden on the snes I played a lot and it’s to easy and to sparse to go back to now I’ve got that Pcb. I’ve never played the pc engine version I’ll have to give that a a go. I don’t like the new versions of Raiden as they are to much of bullet hell which I’m no fan of. Rygar is awesome Tony you should give it a play through as it’s very rewarding game. Happy new year to you mate and all the best for 2023

Simon here: That Moon Patrol is definitely a bootleg. We have a crate with 8 Moon Patrol or sometimes Moon Ranger bootlegs, we don't have an original although we have two or three boardsets that are at least trying to pass for the real deal (until you boot them and the title screen says MOON RANGER ;-) ) The PCB I sent you has spent two weekends burn-in testing before shipping and was still working after that. And yes, this adapter is for JAMMA. Our Q*Bert also has the swearing marquee and according to the coin counter it has over 155000 games on it - before it was set to Free Play. And we also have Raiden and it's awesome! It needs a second joystick though, because you can play at the same time and when one player is Game Over, the other can still play and as long as there are credits, you can just push the start button and come back, like in Bubble Bobble.
@TheArcadeArchive
@TheArcadeArchive Жыл бұрын
Hey Simon Good to see you comment here. Thank you so much for the Pcb, I’m really looking forward to testing it out in the silk worm cabinet. It will be interesting to see the moon patrol art work underneath the black paint as well when I get round to it. Wow your Qbert has been popular over the years, I bet that has some screen burn ?
@senilyDeluxe
@senilyDeluxe Жыл бұрын
@@TheArcadeArchive Through the contrast filter you can definitely see some burn-in. However we have a few screens in the museum that have worse burn, best of all is one from a Pole Position that has GAME OVER forever etched into its face, easily visible as it is very burnt. I'd like to make a TV out of it so when the friends come over to watch soccer (or whatever) let's see how much money they put into it thinking they can play. Our Bomb Jack has very bad burn (also has some Pac Man burn as it was a universal cocktail table), but it still had a very bright and vivid image, unfortunately the LOPT (flyback transformer, unobtainium model) died just a month ago. Then we have an Astro Invaders that spent most its life as a Video Poker, unfortunately the operator threw away the circuit boards, now it runs on a 450MHz PIII DOS MAME machine. The degauss PTC is just a lump of coal (and broken), some capacitors are also extremely scorched (but still measure... slightly out of spec but still serviceable). Our Pengo also has severe screen burn. Screen burn contest, anyone? (Rules: Rear-view protection sets do not count)

Well played in Rygar! You probably know, but each time you end a stage (and your player starts automatically running toward the end of the area) there's some split second timing *at that point*, which requires you to hold the joystick in a "down left" position and you will receive some bonus points. Good luck in GNG and Raiden - also super classic games!

The first red guy in Ghosts n'Goblins can be taken out easily by jumping before the 500pts money bag so that you collect it when you land. As soon as you land, tap-shot him so he doesn't get a chance to take off. If you balls it up and he takes your armour, jump at the gap in the fence in the same area and a new set will drop to the right furthest right of the gravestones.

Ghosts and goblins....oh that game... In the UK, back in the day, after entering the final room, the game told you that you need a cross to kill the final boss, showing you a picture of a cross...and sending you back to the start... However they changed the final item you need to kill the end boss from a cross to a shield but didn't tell you. Spent hours searching for the cross, pumping in credits to no avail. Had to end it when the arcade closed. Cost me a fortune back in the day...lol. Demons crest I own and it’s a fine game but doesn’t quite have the addictive game play like the original. Great to see some over the shoulder gameplay. G'n'G gets easier if you know how to, its mostly patterns and timings. the red Barron you need to wait until he comes forward and then launch 3/4 shots in using the quick fire technique of tapping right/left along with the fire button at the same time. Also the Red Barron turns into a white Barron after a minute, but you can only do that with the Capcom Stadium Invincibility cheat really. Great to see Rygar in the hands of the expert 👍

Really good job on Raiden and GnG too, both swines to get far on. I can only very rarely get past the Bat House on GnG in one credit. I've managed to get to stage 4 on Raiden twice, but normally top out just after the second boss. Lovely to see an actual Gunsmoke PCB too, that is also a cracking game (and much like the others, one tough sonuvagun!). Great video mate, take care and all the best, thanks for posting!

Thanks buddy It was a good run on Rygar but bitd I used to be able to get to level 20, I feel a long way of that yet. There is a million point bonus on level 13 I think and that’s what I’m aiming for,It’s a fantastic game. Wow you did well on Raiden I’m finding it very hard, maybe the dip setting is on hard 🤷‍♂️ I can’t wait to play gunsmoke but unfortunately I need to wire my third button properly on my jamma cab and I didn’t have time. Thanks for watching dude 😎👍

You certainly have yourself a challenge with these selections Alex, what a game Ghosts n Goblins and the sequel is but so damn hard, a 1cc run is truly astonishing Recently played Raiden for the first time on the Jaguar and love it, that arcade version looks a fair bit harder though I don't think I've actually ever played Rygar after watching that, can tell you have put some time into it, I must try it out as it looks good I feel your pain with the Grifter, also my childhood steed and as you say, they weigh a tonne and are made of pig iron, not much chance of getting it nicked was there 🤣 All that said, I sold a nice one I had last year for £600 so some people value them anyway Hope to get down there in the next few months all being well 👍✌️

£600 for a Grifter wow 😮 must be all that nostalgia flooding back to whoever bought it. Rygar is awesome James you must give it a play through, it’s very atmospheric and not as hard as GNG which makes it more accessible. Thanks for watching mate and hope to see you soon.

When it comes to hard games you know how to pick 'em.....Raiden is relentless. Re Dropzone - you showed the Super Dropzone box for SNES in the video - I first played it on NES and it's a more stripped back game on that console (no bosses) but it's beautifully smooth and just as tough. I think it was originally an Atari 800 game but only played it on NES - even in PAL it's fast and super smooth (no doubt because Archer coded it to play well in PAL). I was 11 or 12 when Space Invaders appeared and I still really miss the old arcades. There was nothing quite like that 80s era.

@@TheArcadeArchive I only own one cabinet - have a refurbed Asteroids Deluxe from TNT in the US in very nice condition - sitting in my hall - have an understanding wife. That's too bad but as you say his legacy lives on, both those games sadly never released in NA on Genesis, Snooker game was a great example of 16-bit 3D gaming that still plays well today. Played G&G plenty of places but I often think about one that was at a farmer's market, my Dad did a job there and he gave me some quarters to pass the time but I was rubbish at it, still am lol. Wasn't the biggest shmup player bitd but Raiden was still a household name to me. Never thought I'd get any better at Rygar but with that Tecmo Xbox collection and emulation I've managed to see a lot more of it than I ever did in arcades. ;)
