Join us as we pay tribute to the cinema of 2013. We congratulate the Oscar winners (kind of) and watch Ridley Scott's 2013 mixed-bag of a movie, The Counselor. We learn that a certain philosophical concept, in fact, has no temperature.
In Seen It, we discuss fiends, promises, and Adam Sandler's trip to the arthouse.
All film footage is used in accordance with fair use and US copyright law. All music in the show is used with full permission of the composer.
Thanks for all the great comments. Keep em coming! If you watch one of the movies we discuss, let us know what you thought of it.
Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.

I'm surprised you didn't discuss the themes in the movie more. Like for example, Bardem continually talks about how much he knows women, but in the end it turns out he didn't even know his own wife...

The opening bit was comedy gold. You set it up with the bell and buzzer for the Oscar predictions and then leave it up to the viewer to think as to why Craig didn't enjoy watching the Oscars with Matt. Perhaps it was because Matt was grinding on the couch.

Ok, guys, but in "The Counselor" his wife doesn't just "die." It's just like the bolito that must show up later. She dies in a snuff film and, like the viewer of a snuff film, Counselor is an intrinsic part of its actualization. The appearance of the DVD is probably the most terrifying aspect of the film because it's the most believable. And somehow, vaguely and maybe inarticulately, it becomes a metaphor and accusation for the act of viewing itself.

Boo, this movie is great. 8/10. Not everything has to have realistic dialogue or be plot heavy. The atmosphere rocks, the dialogue is unrealistic but beautifully crafted, and the tragedy with Penelope's death is shown tremendously on Fassbender's face. This movie hits three notes in perfect harmony and is totally worth watching.

A comment that Craig made last episode about Rush that I wanted to touch on: He's right. Racing movies rely waaaaaaaaay too much on those car porn shots instead of trying to tell a cohesive story, and it's interesting that he mentioned it just when advertising for the Need For Speed movie is ramping up...that's pretty much Exhibit A on what Craig was talking about.

If you guys are interested in any international film suggestions, the movie Red Cliff is very good. Made in China by John Woo in 2008. I recently watched it for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. It has well-choreographed battle scenes that do not rely exclusively on instantaneous camera movements and cuts like most of American action movies of today.
