I hate how the biggest advances in fashion of the past 10 years have been people like Kanye and Virgil breaking through the elitism of art world ...only for them to reaffirm it and make it exclusive once again through expensive exclusive peices with limited runs. You would imagine with the ridiculous manufacturing capabilities we have available that anyone would be able to design anything and put it into their homes (like how anyone can make their software or make their own video games) instead of waiting for a few exalted designers to allow them to buy their limited run sofas.

Spend some time researching, finding creators you like and don’t like. Study the ones you dig, find out what you like and don’t like about them. Also hit up some furniture stores (especially vintage!) Additionally, whilst doing this also learn how to make simple items like a chair or table, this site is good for that. I personally find it helpful to have a approach of extensive knowledge and then putting that theory into practice at the same time. (Selfish tip: when first creating the simple items for example a chair, try and imagine what it needs/doesn’t need, how does it work?/how does it not work? What is a chair? What do we as societies view as a chair? It’s quite fun to take these concepts into different directions and get abstract with it. You don’t even have to be an experimental artist but I believe that will definitely set you out from the rest.)
