Everyone got confused because after the 1st Chinese skater lapped them, she then just chills at the back, but her fellow chinese team mate who was originally at the back made her way near the front of the pack . when the final lap bell went off for the 1st Chinese skater at the back. the second Chinese skater picks up the pace and goes hardout like it’s really the final lap. It fully tricked two of the other skaters trying to get their leg infront at the finish line, she then quickly races around one more time to complete the REAL final lap and grabs silver. Hard to understand what exactly was happening since I don't know much about Ice Skating. So what Yingru did was she quickly completed a lap ahead of everyone and tapped her teammate who was behind to let her know (I'm thinking the reason she was also behind was that others don't quickly catch what's going on) then her teammate surged towards the leading pack. So then at the end the bell rang the moment Yingru passed the starting line for her last lap, but then everybody INCLUDING the spectators, commentator thought this was everybody's final lap as they cheered, and so everyone began to sprint towards the finish line and when they got to there they slowed down thinking it was over but Yingru's teammate knew it was wasn't and was the only one who didn't slow down which gave her the edge and she ended up comfortably winning second.

Notice that the race wasn't over at 2:35. The 2nd Chinese speed skater kept pushing to finish second place while everyone else thought the race was over.

what is genious is that there is not score board or a lap counter , they just know that when the bell rings is the last lap , so when everybody heard the bell they tougth that they were in the last lap , when only the last girl was , thats why she touched her teammate , so that when she heards the bell she needs to run one more lap.

@ButterMoney-ql8hk4 күн бұрын
Girl why would you do this in an 800! This is too little of a race to be doing this. I wouldn’t even be doing this in an 1500 indoor! I think this is a better tactic for ice skating but track is diffrent

It's a shame the commentator completely forgot she did this by the end of the race, as he also thought it was the last lap for all the skaters at the same time and thought the race was over for them all.

Love the fact that when they get the bell for last lap they don’t realise it does not apply to them, then they fight for the line on the wrong lap allowing the other Chinese skater (who knows they still have another lap to do) to easily pick up silver.

The coaches screaming and falling in the back when the contestants thought the competition was over 😂
@KingTwistedD5 ай бұрын
This was genius . The first attacker pushed an early lap with better endurance than her partner. After she completed her first go ahead lap she settles in the back to recover and protect the Gold. Her partner had the more difficult job, which was field control . After receiving the signal from her partner she attacks and moves to the front of the field , not as a earnest move to compete but in an attempt to disorientate the rest of the competition by purposely slowing down and simultaneously forcing other teams to reposition and allowing her teammate crucial recovery time. Then the final lap. Only the Chinese were mentally prepared for the double single for the last lap to begin and the Gold medalist to cross the finish line seconds apart. Giving the Chinese competitor a final psychological advantage over the rest of the field . 10/10 strategy

@David-io9lp4 ай бұрын
The brilliance of that strategy is that the Chinese lady realizes that most people stick to protocol, they stick to what they've been taught. When they see someone just breeze past them at the beginning, they probably just react how they've been conditioned to react - keep at a leisure pace at the beginning, spead up a bit at the mid-race, and speed up completely at the end. It's also the case that by the time any of the other athletes have overcome their confusion, it's too late. They are already in the mid-race where the rest of the racers are speading-up themselves. That strategy is best as an opening move. If executed at the mid-laps or end-laps, it likely fails.

wait hold up...not only did this strategy secure gold, but it won silver too?!?! the key to the entire strategy was the silver skater. imagine the coach deciding which skater would go and which would stay in the pack. they key to the silver was going at the bell, then going again after the other racers thought the race was over. amazing stuff. mad respect.
