I got to the lead and eased off.. and this was maybe 1/6th of the way through the race and I was so dead and exhausted halfway through I had to practically walk the last 100m.

Everyone got confused because after the 1st Chinese skater lapped them, she then just chills at the back, but her fellow chinese team mate who was originally at the back made her way near the front of the pack . when the final lap bell went off for the 1st Chinese skater at the back. the second Chinese skater picks up the pace and goes hardout like it’s really the final lap. It fully tricked two of the other skaters trying to get their leg infront at the finish line, she then quickly races around one more time to complete the REAL final lap and grabs silver. Hard to understand what exactly was happening since I don't know much about Ice Skating. So what Yingru did was she quickly completed a lap ahead of everyone and tapped her teammate who was behind to let her know (I'm thinking the reason she was also behind was that others don't quickly catch what's going on) then her teammate surged towards the leading pack. So then at the end the bell rang the moment Yingru passed the starting line for her last lap, but then everybody INCLUDING the spectators, commentator thought this was everybody's final lap as they cheered, and so everyone began to sprint towards the finish line and when they got to there they slowed down thinking it was over but Yingru's teammate knew it was wasn't and was the only one who didn't slow down which gave her the edge and she ended up comfortably winning second.

Love the fact that when they get the bell for last lap they don’t realise it does not apply to them, then they fight for the line on the wrong lap allowing the other Chinese skater (who knows they still have another lap to do) to easily pick up silver.

Its not strategy. It's a competition so everybody should move as fast as they could. Even After moving so fast and lead 1 lap, she still able to keep up with others pace with ease. So, she just too fast and since she realize no one try to chase her or follow her pace, what she did after that was just skating savely to finish.
@Dark_Lantern_6 ай бұрын
Any plan before a game is called a strategy. "Skating as fast as you can" is also a strategy. But that wasn't the strategy. She was not "too fast that no one tried to chase her". The others simply forgot to chase her and forgot that the "final lap" was not the final lap for them. Because traditionally, you're supposed to sprint at the end to reserve stamina. You can clearly see everyone pushed their toes forward on the "final lap" and slowed down while the silver medalist (who was also chinese) was still racing properly. That was the real strategy.
@eisas13066 ай бұрын
@@Dark_Lantern_ I've roller skated for years and ice skated a little. It's incredibly obvious that in the first few laps, the other skaters were all going too slow. If they would have kept pace, the skater in first should have stayed at least half-way ahead and not lapping the other skaters. Sorry but there's no strategy here, it's just poor sport performance.
@Koenigg995 ай бұрын
By your logic then everyone should try sprinting a marathon
@panda42474 ай бұрын
@@Koenigg99 not gonna argue, I'd just like to point out that the current marathon pace is almost a sprint too. if then can run 42 km in around 2 hours, that's some 5.8m/s... Sure, that's only half as fast as a 100m sprint, but try running 400m in 68 seconds if you are not an athlete yourself (there is even a video where guy gives 50 quid to people if they can run one lap at that pace... and another video where they try 10 men alternating laps to beat that time as a relay race - basically, doing some 10-11 400m laps each, alternating after each lap, and it's not that easy). Elite marathon runners are out of this world
@user-dv9fd5hl6m4 ай бұрын
Tried something unconventional by sprinting directly on 1st lap, poking her team mate, stay behind to not alert the others, utilise the limited visibility range of competitors. Just because you, the dumb one failed to catch all of those doesn't mean that it's not a strategy 🤦
@RuzsabJaniesq4 ай бұрын
A brilliant strategy and also an example of how easily we can be fooled when we carry only our preconceptions in our heads and do not perceive unexpected changes in the surrounding reality. The second place of the other Chinese athlete made the point beautifully. Short track could introduce a similar race to the Omnium, as this race was run exactly like the current Points race in track cycling.
@xeflatio936 ай бұрын
Now everyone will be alert of such strategies but you will always have the risk of someone speeding up the pace at the beginning, so yeah it takes just one person to try to get one lap ahead to make everyone sprint the entire race lol, she definitely changed the sport

@@davidleandro7026It can’t be banned. This race is mostly an endurance race. That is why other skaters didn’t dash forward when she did. Its strategy that worked brilliantlyz
