This male deer wondered his way into our yard and was different from most deer. For one it is a busy area in the summer and not a normal time to see a deer wondering around mid day and he seemed to not mind human company what so ever. We enjoyed the time he spent with us and will miss him as the conservation officers in the area decided to destroy him weeks later.. I find it pretty hard to believe there could not be better solution...

We have tons of semi-tame deer here in Cody, Wyoming. They walk up and down the sidewalks, through yards and parking lots, and they usually wait for traffic to clear before they cross the street. These animals are simply learning to co-exist with humans and to benefit by it. Most folks love having them around which makes it mutually beneficial. There are always risks in life and government mommies want to protect us children from harm, but hey government... eat a bucket of turds and shut the hell up. I'll take my chances with the deer, they're considerably less harmful than lawyers and politicians!

+CplSki USMC Like.. What would a human do if a deer wandered up to their child in a strange way.. They would try to kill it.. Why do some people think it is inappropriate for a deer to act the same way?
@CplSkiUSMC
@CplSkiUSMC 8 жыл бұрын
+John Jake What is a "strange way"? In this video, the deer is the one behaving out of character and the humans are the ones who are accepting of it. Human - wildlife interactions will only increase because the human population continues to increase and expand. Wild animals are learning to benefit from this and their numbers will increase. So human kindness in these types of encounters is beneficial in the long run because we all have to live together. So why do some people think it is inappropriate for humans and wildlife to be accepting of each other and interact with kindness and companionship?

+John Jake Yes, I had to re-read you answer three times until I understood that you actually agreed and that you would have liked it to live. Maybe the formulation was a bit, well unfortunate. You kind of took the deer's perspective which I liked a lot. it is just that me, though I am strongly pro-coexistence, and maybe other readers might have found it subconsciously so odd that we might have missed that on the first glance. Anyway, just thought I would point that out. Greetings from Germany, Mike.

Clearly you’ve never seen what happens to a car when it hits a deer. Or even worse, what happens to a deer when they get hit by a car, have their legs broken, and try to run away only to slowly bleed out, with their bones sticking out through their skin. To say it’s gruesome is an understatement. Or even worse yet, when the deer gets hit by a sedan, flies through the windshield, tries to run, but ends up kicking the driver and front passenger to death. What do you think a deer hoof does when it connects with a human eye socket, nose, face, or head? Dead. Dead. Dead. Not only does your comment show a lack of understanding, but, ironically, a lack of compassion. Urban plus wildlife never ends well. Conservation officers conserve more than just animals. They conserve people too. Sometimes Bambi needs to die.

I once had a confrontation with a "conservation officer" over an opossum I had sitting in my car while at a restaurant. He questioned me about the creature and told me I would have to release it. She had a cropped tail from an accident but he would hear nothing of any explanation. Weeks later, I stopped in the local office of the Conservation Dept. (Missouri) and he actually sided with me that the former officer was acting out "the letter of the law" and not realizing "the spirit of the law". That has stuck with me all these years - 'officers' of any kind have temptations to overextend their authority. It's very likely this deer was hand raised or cared for by a human to be so friendly. I have been around some like this and even raised a young female while working for an exotic animal park. A hand raised one even poked it's head in the open window of my car parked at the side of the road and kissed my wife right on the mouth!! Unforgettable...!

I’m an avid deer hunter and I totally disagree with the conservation department killing a deer like this. It’s in the yards and on the sidewalks because we built our houses and sidewalks in its home. It’s been forced to be dependent on humans and it can’t help that. I would only and do only kill deer in remote areas where the deer are terrified of people and they are uninterrupted by human activities because killing deer that are conditioned to see people is inhumane and unfair. That deer is a living creature and when I shoot and kill a deer I recognize that its life has value. The deer in the city has just as much value to its life regardless of the fact that it’s eating backyards and walking on the sidewalk, but the fact that it is forced to be there because of habitat loss makes it absolutely unfair to kill. The conservation agents don’t run around in the woods shooting deer so why shoot one in someone’s yard? If anything let homeowners shoot deer that they have problems with so the meat can be used

You're either: A) Not a hunter at all B) A poacher who is unlicensed in his state to hunt. Because if you truly were a licensed hunter and you had taken your Hunter Safety Course, you would get why it's necessary to kill that deer. Those deers bring diseases, giant ticks, and danger to the local pets, adults, and children that are outside. There's also the property damage. Plus you don't want to be in the middle of them during mating season.

Had it in a pad- locked cage. (Personally I didnt think it was fair to keep wild snake in cage) Anyways, fish and game lady came and said she had to kill it. He fought her tooth and nail but she literally tortured it to death, cuz she didnt kno how to do a clean kill, and after that she found out it was legal.

Tawny Parker Yeah, they come up to your door because foolish people were more than likely feeding/interacting with them from their homes which eventually gets them killed, a lot of "hunters" will shoot them knowing they're semi-domesticated. Me and a friend had a deer show up (on a farm we managed) when it was just a fawn... (the mother probably died), we put orange reflective (nontoxic) paint/dye and a collar on him... and someone still shot him! However, my friend had put a bell on his collar during hunting season that year... which (I believe) could have got him killed for scaring off other deer in the area.

+Timothy Martin relocating deer is tough. the don't take to tranquilizers very well and they don't like staying in enclosed area's for long. From my experience one out of four don't usually make it unfortunately. My guess they did not "destroy it" it the sense most people are taking it but might have donated the meat to a homeless shelter or food bank.

Ḡαღ♭ℓ℮ℳαḓм@η you are a perfect example of someone who has absolutely no idea what you're talking about. First of all deer are wild animals and are not at all friendly to humans. If it is, it is sick. Parasites contribute to brain wasting diseases and that's when wild animals approach people. Secondly, this is not a fully grown deer, its adolescent. And therefore, should probably be in a stage of life where it's the most afraid of people. The only thing that you have right is that it's male. I cannot believe the idiocy and the naivete of people who think that it's sweet or cute one wild animals act like this. A healthy deer that's normal and okay would not let you get in 50 yards of it. When they Wonder in the neighborhoods and interact with humans, they are very sick creatures

Charlotte Larras it's almost though you can be accused of not reading my argument. Zoos? Wildlife refuges? The animal is diseased! I showed this video to my father, who says that it's displaying traits of a parasite based brain wasting disease. Especially when it lays down. Terminally disease Danimals, especially ones that have communicable diseases are going to be sent to a zoo! Or a wildlife refuge! Putting the animal down is the only safe decent thing to do for the animal, and the safety of other animals who are not disease. Grow up a little bit.

This deer may have had friendly experiences early in life with people (yes, this happenes). Maybe he was rescued as a fawn from private people who raised him for a while. Or his mother was tame and he learned to trust humans that way. Or he was ill/slightly mentally disabled. Could be many things. Shame they killed him.

Clyde Rembrandt Yes, I experienced this myself and really liked it for a change to have wild deer around me which were completely unbothered by my presence and ignored me like they would ignore a passing rabbit. Wise Up In my experience, game wardens, dog catchers, etc. aren't evil, aren't "haters," and aren't dirtbags; they're people doing a thankless job the best they can, following certain limitations imposed on them by regulations, and trying to keep the public safe while balancing the good of the wildlife. Moving this deer to a remote location may have been an ideal solution, but we don't know what other factors may have come into play here. One thing is almost certain, though: this deer had been fed by people before, and so lost its natural fear of humans; a fed dear is a dead deer, and it's those people who bear most of the responsibility.

Tame male deer in the U.S. hurt people. During the rut they will gore people with their antlers or slice with their hooftips, called hoofing. The largest number of people injured in national parks by animals are people hurt by tame deer. Therefore, very tame male deer are often killed to protect people from injury. By petting him instead of chasing him these people in this video are contributing to his culling.

I grew up on a friend's 297-acre turf farm...... one day he was hunting geese in the middle of 100 acre field when, from the treeline, appeared a DNR cop who'd cited him for hunting over bait. It was like Scotty beamed him down to that field from Starship Enterprise...... sod fields of course have tons of grass seed. The DNR cop told him they'd spotted him from aerial recon photos. I don't recall the outcome, but it did cost him quite a lot to get cleared.

What people here don't get is that once an animal as big as this gets comfortable with humans, no amount of transporting and shooing it away will make it stop viewing people as a source of food. A buck will 9 times out of 10 absolutely *not* tolerate a pet animal that innocently tries to approach it and make friends, which leads to the pet getting trampled and emotional suffering for anyone involved. Once mating season comes they'll often become aggressive towards anyone that comes in their path, and this is a fact, not some conservationist bullshit that everyone seems to so hate. You have to realize that even a single event where someone gets injured by a wild animal, is always enough grounds for the elimination of said animal, since in a society the risks of having something this large and potentially dangerous around human habitat must outweigh the benefits. Believe me, even if they didn't hurt anyone or anyone's pet, there are multiple other nuisances they pose, damage to property being one for instance. If you have read this far, and haven't managed to keep the steam from coming out of your ears, remember what I said in my first sentence: They. Will. Come. Back. And. Cause. More. Problems. Hence, the only way to get rid of the problem is to kill the animal. As sad and angry it may make you, would it make you change your views if someone you knew got impaled by one of those antlers?

Your correct. The people that knew the deer came and transported it in a horse trailer back around the other side of the lake where it grew up around humans in sparse acreages . It showed up back by me on the more popular side of the lake. The deer was too friendly to be around beaches, people and houses etc..

I love the fact that you can pet the deer, but I worry about people seeing all dears is being that friendly and then get a deer kicked!

Conservation is not the same as preservation. It's all about maintaining a reasonable population that's ultimately the best for the ecosystem. If deer are foraging in people's yards there's not enough food available for the current population, thus you lower it. Otherwise the deer just die slowly on the sides of roads because they desperately and foolishly try to cross it for resources.

At my Mom's and step Dad's house, they have like 5 Deers walking in their yard and my Step Dad actually feeds them either out of his hand or he'll lay out food for them to eat. They still get pretty spooked, but after a few months or more, they recognize my Step Dad and knows he's no threat. There is a little boy deer that is slowly growing out his antlers. It looks like 2 bumps, so cute.
