Lie detectors only work on people who are scared and shaken up.. They are more of a tool law enforcement uses to try and rattle suspects and tarnish them in the press. I once lied through my teeth, trying to make myself shake or trip it up, by way of a friend in law enforcement - as a baseline test for the department.. I blatantly lied (and my friend knew it, but the examiner didn't know me from atom).. GOOD detectives will never eliminate or even lessen their suspicion if someone who "passes" a "lie detector" testing, or multiples passes with flying colors.. IF they do, then they are amature at best..

All that evidence is circumstantial but definitely points in a specific direction. Those boys didn't bury themselves down range from a military shooting range. @@Cruor34 Most people with healthy relationships value their families and would mourn them if they were lost. It's not being "over emotional," is responding the only way they can. And I'm sorry, but the argument of "mourning does nothing to bring them back, so stop," has got to be the stupidest argument against an emotional response I have ever heard. If someone loses somebody they love dearly, they can't just tell their emotions to "stop". Not to mention that, as painful as the process of mourning is, it is ultimately healthy for the individual. Shoving the emotions down and trying to "get over it" is mentally and emotionally exhausting and does not do the person any good.

When my grandfather died in Florida, (about 20 years ago) we went to the funeral. Myself, my dad, his brothers and my cousins. We did the funeral in the morning, and then went back to the hotel changed and went right off to Universal Studios Florida an hour away. cousins/uncles too. Clint isn't guilty for wanting a lawyer, he's smart. Your mom could be missing and you'd still be best to not talk without a lawyer present. Cops don't want your help, they want to see if you're guilty, and no matter how innocent or truthful you are, they're still there to get you to confess, not to see what you know. There was one story awhile back of a guy that confessed to harming his father because the police manipulated him into confessing under the guise of coming to him for help. His father was actually alive and the police just manipulated him until he broke down, even bringing his dog in there telling him they'll put him down if he doesn't confess, that's the people who clint lawyered up from.

To be fair, if your ma is missing you're more likely to be a suspect than most people are (other than her partner). But the best advice is never to talk to cops without a lawyer. If there's no organized crime involvement, usually they end up at the bottom of some ventilation shaft to be found 30 years later when someone goes down there. Especially if they're drunk. There was the case of the one dude who died in the walls of a very popular club and wasn't found for weeks. And iirc that guy was sober. If it was foul play, if there are 0 clues, they could be anywhere on the planet. Probably at the bottom of a lake or remote woods. While I have heard of all three stories before, the story of the frog boys is just a constant reminder how little the South Korean government cares about its children. The Sewol Ferry disaster is another great example of that and it makes it less odd how their birthrate is falling so hard. How was the ferry accident the governments fault?!?! Sure they lied to the parents to keep them from showing up to the scene and trying to get inside a capsized ship. Its called a lie for the greater good. By the time rescue got their there was nothing that could be done but rescue those who made it out. The rest were doomed and anyone dumb enough to climb down in the ship would never have comeback out alive. The navy performed a test to see the viability of escaping a ship listed on its side and it took 8 grown men 18 minutes to get just one out of one room and if that person has anymore doorways to get through he's no less stuck then the rest of them.

@bradsanders407 you're not very familiar with that incident, are you? The first rescue ship got there within half an hour. The coast guards there did nothing, kept civilian divers from doing their jobs, the top dogs at the government were AWOL for hours. There was a Japanese ship that offered aid in the area- they were refused. There was literally an American military ship there that offered over three times to assist because they had specialized search and rescue divers on board - they were refused. They were also refused when they tried to offer assistance recovering bodies. Survivors say they watched "rescuers" from the coast guard watch without helping as they tried to break windows and escape. The government wasted precious hours that lives could have been saved with. I've seen the case covered by other channels though I can't remember every detail...I think they eventually got permission to dig up the area where he would have fallen? They might have also taken cadaver dogs down there. It was also a construction area inside of the building and not like a huge pit outside. It would have made a lot of sense but no remains were found. The Lore Lodge yt channel may have covered the case and Aiden is super thorough with his research on cases.

The other odd thing that happened on the Tom Messick case is that 2 FBI agents showed up without anyone calling them. FBI don’t usually get evolved in missing person cases unless it’s a child or a high profile case, which this was not. They showed up and talked to the wife for 5 minutes and claimed that after so many hours gone that he would be declared a missing person and then left. They never even talked to the police officers or anyone else who was doing the search and rescue. Very odd

I always find the story of the Frog Boys so very sad. Kids being murdered always is going to be but - there were five of them. If you've ever tried to herd kids you know how difficult it can be if they don't want to do something. I'm always haunted by the idea that at least one of those boys probably could have escaped that fate if they'd all bolted - but they didn't because they didn't want to leave their friends.

The first one has been covered extensively, apparently the CCTV surveillance to the front of the bar was only intermittent which would have allowed him to leave undetected. Though I remember the case, I think you featured, where some guy vanished in a club and eventually his body was found behind some dry wall he appeared to have accidentally fallen through or something. Maybe something similar happened at the construction site though you would have thought it all would have been thoroughly checked. And South Korean police seriously sucked. But it was a dictatorship so its not surprising. Minor point, South Korea did not 'return' to democracy - it never was a democracy prior to the 1990s.

The "Frog Boys" case feels damn near self-explanatory to an extent, considering that the bullets came from the base. Because of that, the case will likely never be solved, unfortunately.

I think the theory that an officer was shooting at the range that day and accidentally hit one of the boys, then tried to hide the evidence and get rid of the witnesses to cover up his accident is the most likely. Whether this officer had help or not, I couldn't say, but this theory is absolutely possible and what I personally think happened to them. The simplest explanation is usually the right one, and your idea that the boys went to collect trophies fits in perfectly with the whole accidental shooting/hiding the crime theory. Of course they wouldn't tell anyone where they were going because any parent or guardian would tell them that it's not a good idea to hang out near a shooting range, even on a day when no one is supposed to be there! I feel so bad for the parents.

My first thought when I heard there were bullet casings with the kids was that one of them had found a gun and wanted to show it off. As soon as I heard there was a military base, my next thought was souvenir hunting. I loved to explore as a kid, and I know if I routinely explored that mountain, I'd be very tempted to sneak in there. Grabbing the bullets as a neat keepsake is a logical next step for the kids. The question of how they ended up bludgeoned to death is a harder one. If it was natural causes, then I'd assume one of them fell, and the others fell or became exhausted trying to help them. They didn't go for help, because then they'd have to admit where they were. If it was homicide, the accidental shooting doesn't make sense to me. You shoot downrange and hear someone scream, you call for help. It's not your fault if someone wanders onto the range. What makes more sense to me is if they were caught and an over-enthusiastic guard hit them with a rifle or baton, trying to punish them or just "exert his authority" like a bully. One or more of the kids goes unconscious from the beating and he realizes he's gonna be in trouble, so he disposes of all of them.

I agree with the other commenters, even if you're totally innocent and the police need to interview you, you need to get a lawyer. Also, as somebody who has worked in mental health for over 10 years, the possibility that Brian ended it seems by far to be the most likely. When I've seen people attempt to end their own lives, substances are almost always involved because it lowers your inhibitions and makes you more impulsive and less likely to think through things logically. Many times, when we interview families of the patient, they will say they had no idea the person was depressed or was thinking about attempting to end themselves. On average, men use methods that are more likely to be fatal. Brian was also very versed in what would be most likely to "work". I would also like to say that there is a chance the security cameras just missed him because the technology at the time was not the best and if he took a jacket or hat off, he might look different enough where they saw him on camera and assumed he was somebody else. That's just my speculation though. I'm avoiding the S word because of KZbin systems that flag things.

Polygraphs are an unreliable “tool” used in investigations, yet not allowed as evidence in court. For a good reason. My husband was a Federal LEO for 42 years. He was considered to be the best of “top tier” investigators. Upon occasion young agents attending polygraph school would ask my husband to be a test subject for the students. He chose one thing to “lie” about in each test. Like the name of his mother, how long we had been married and so on. He passed every test showing “no deception”. He simply repeated the lie over and over to himself before the test. Now he understands the polygraph better than the general public, he’s also a very mentally and emotionally strong person, however he stated that no one should subject themselves to that test.

Polygraph tests are notoriously inaccurate, and agreeing to take part in one is a bad idea if the police are just looking for someone to pin. If they were desperate enough to try a PT, they'd probably got all the information he knew already, so that's a good time for him to step away from the investigation. EDIT: Ah. Many disappeance stories are similarly mysterious. I had a friend from high school that vanished during college. Got in a car accident, took an uber, then disappeared. His sister said he may have walked out on his stressful life. I cling to that theory.

@@tifKh I honestly have no specific theory. The only thing I can think of is, like several instances covered in other episodes - there have been MANY MANY examples of people doing inexplicable things, and becoming trapped as a result. I would not be surprised if he somehow became stuck in the building somewhere, and they just haven't found him. Crazier yet similar things have happened. But that is my only theory, aside from him potentially having been murdered and dismembered/somehow transported out undetected. I cannot imagine he started a new life. His family have adamantly looked for him, if he were alive I can't imagine he wouldn't have been spotted by now.

As someone who’s grown up right next to the pond, basically. I remember when this first happened and I’ve heard this story on several different occasions since then. But knowing the area pretty well, it still gives me the creeps tho honestly!! Especially not to turn up SOME sort of clues as to what happened to him, with all the people involved and the equipment they brought out.. It’s a fairly well known and traveled area and someone should have turned up something by now.. However the fact that nobody has, always made me feel like one of the other guys, who went out with him. Must’ve played some kind of role in his death, for one reason or another.. But obviously I didn’t know any of those people and it’s just a gut feeling. Either way, it’s messed up regardless!! Man made it through all he had, just to be blown into the wind without any trace of anything sadly… Prayers for Tom and those who cared about him tho!! 😔🙏🏼🙏🏼

I think it's more likely he went into a hole or crevice. Anyone doing something to him would have had to hide the body as well as any evidence of foul play without anyone noticing anything strange. Foul play isn't a magical answer when other things don't make sense because you have to consider how they were able to actually do it. On the other hand, maps of missing people line up *extremely* well to maps of areas with a lot of cave systems, it's way beyond what could statistically be a coincidence.

@@littlebear274 Oh for sure, I definitely could be wrong! But I always thought that they had taken him out on the way there. Meaning he never even made it to that spot they said they sat him down at.. I always thought they did something to him and with him, before they ever made it into the area. Then just called and played up the missing factor, to give themselves plenty of time and space to get rid of any evidence. I can’t even really explain why it is I always thought that. Because it was never a suspicion of such a thing. But it’s just something that I’ve thought/felt like, since the first day of them searching for him and hearing about it.. I don’t honestly have a good reason to believe such a thing. Just something I’m my gut has always bothered me and the situation. But granted, he’s likely to have just walked off , god only knows where… Jus seems strange that nothing has ever turned up about him, no matter what the threw at it for equipment and man power resources! But who knows, perhaps he’ll finally turn up this hunting season and his family will finally get some sort of closure on the situation tho!! 🙏🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🙏🏼

When humans describe an odd silence in the forest “like something is keeping the animals away”, why is it not obvious that they are themselves that “something”?

Because sudden silence is only noticeable when it’s sudden. The animals that go silent when humans enter are not heard by the humans. We hear birds and crickets and chittering squirrels. Those feel very little threat by us. Warn each other, get into the trees, and watch us or continue ab their business. Noisily. When those animals* go silent, we notice. Paralegal here: Honestly, if you are in a situation where you are being interrogated by police, you should ALWAYS get a lawyer. Polygraphs are faulty and they aren’t admissible in court. Police can legally mislead you, lie to you, and fabricate scenarios to back you into a corner. Some of them will do anything to “solve” a case regardless of actual facts. The number of wrongly accused people in this country is terrifying.

I'm guessing the frog boys had a plan of sneaking onto the firing range to collect bullet casings, and that's why they were so secretive of what they were doing. Then either a solider (or multiple) shot one by accident, then killed them all to cover it up, or saw them and decided to hunt them for sport.

In the first story the construction site is the obvious place to look but it doesn't sound like anyone did so. Additionally construction companies can lose a lot of money if there are any delays, so they wouldn't have welcomed any investigation.

There is a fourth option for Brian: He could have an accident. So neither foul play nor deliberate disappearance. There was a case where they found remains behind a box freezer of someone who went missing years before. He simply fell behind the freezer, got stuck there, perished, and wasn't found. So there is a chance that Brian is still somewhere in the building. And nothing wrong with lawyering up and denying a polygraph. Those machines are even in the best case just marginally better than randomly guessing. And if there is any risk that you might say something stupid or get manipulated, even if you have done nothing wrong.
