You don't need a deeper connection to someone to write a song about them, even what sounds like a love. The best song I've yet written was a love song about a friend I was starting to develop a crush on and didn't want to. So I went overboard on the lyrics and the next day, the crush was gone and I was able to stay just friends. So, if he says it's just about sex, it's true. No problem reading more into it, just take it as your interpretation and not necessarily his.
