As a person who's been struggling with this for years, I can confirm that doing anything besides focusing on yourself can really help diminish your fears. By “anything“ I mean facing your fears, most importantly. The feeling you get when you break the ice is DIVINE. This encourages you to do it more, because it felt good. It's just like exercise; you start small with lighter weights and when you break your personal bounds of endurance, you can move onto heavier weights.

This is just a method to cope with social anxiety, but the ROOT of ALL social anxiety is low self-esteem. When was the last time you saw someone with high self-esteem who had social anxiety? They don't exist. If you want to truly get rid of social anxiety, you have to find out why you have low self-esteem, and work to improve it. That is how you TRULY get rid of it.

I have kinda mediem self-esteem and have this disorder but it's still isn't cure..
@drondronov137 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I was just gonna write the same exact comment. It's all about self esteem. Because I feel like anxiety comes when you feel like you are being judged negatively, or compared to someone better. I, for example, started with my body. I started working out, and now when I catch people checking me out, gives me an awesome self esteem boost, because I know my body looks good. P.S.: NEVER take those anti-anxiety meds. It seems like an easy solution, but it is not a solution at all, its more of a temporary trick. Also, smoking increases anxiety/nervousness.
@GuRuGeorge037 жыл бұрын
anxiety is the opposite of confidence. the method "improvement pill" describes in this video gives u confidence that the things you worry about do not exist. knowing stuff up until the point of unconsciously applying it. that is how u gain confidence and get rid of anxiety. there are forms of social anxiety tho which are not linked to self esteem or confidence issues. for example if your brain is simply incapable of accepting different hormones because of a genetic disorder. that is when medication is the only true help. the same applies to things like depression. most cases can be cured through therapy and all that. but sometimes you are trying to fix something that isn't broken. it just doesn't even exist and you need medication to make it exist :)
@jozendesu7 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I agree. I have a certain degree (small compared to others) of social anxiety, but it's not like I have many negative thoughts about myself. I'd almost go as far as to say I'm a narcissist. For the most part I'd say it's because I am afraid of messing up a conversation, or not having anything to say. That of which would lead to an awkward silence. I find it hard to start conversations because I'm worried about what impression my words might leave or if I'm saying the right things.

As a person with social anxiety i can say this is the very thing that actually made me even more socially anxious. Understanding people and their body language made me 1. think even more about myself when talking to someone with regards to my own body language and my own expressions and 2. made me WAY more sensitive to their reactions during a conversation with me. Although i get where he's coming from, its a bit counter-intuitive and can make it even worse with people who have very neurotic forms of social anxiety - they can easily twist it to be about them again and add to even more isolation around people.

Improvement Pill: Thank you for posting this excellent information. I suffered from social anxiety badly for many years, even to the point where it was life threatening - but luckily found my own way out through self-knowledge. What you say about focusing our attention on the other person is, I would agree, with the key. This is because the human mind can only think one thought at a time. And if our attention is focused inward thinking "attack thoughts" and "judgemental thoughts" about ourselves - then we are not picking up on the clues, both verbal and non-verbal, that others are giving out. That I would say is the principle difference between those who are socially really good - and those who are not as good as they could be. So it's really about communication skills. It's about tuning into them instead of attacking ourselves But the one indispensable thing I would recommend anyone suffering from social anxiety to focus on is "listening skills." Listening to people is NOT the same as merely hearing them - and listening can be done on several levels. It could well be if you are reading this that your listening skills are not as good as they could be. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT BOTH THE STUDY OF NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION AND LISTENING ARE SKILLS. AND SKILLS ARE THINGS THAT WE LEARN - JUST LIKE DRIVING A CAR. If you are capable of learning to drive a car you can do this. A few years ago I invested some time and money in studying counseling skills - which in reality are advanced communication skills. Absolutely best decision I ever made. Today social interaction may be a source of stress for you - but another way of looking at this is that its life showing you where you need to focus attention upon. What would it mean to you to not only to be socially popular - but also able to help others to lift themselves up as well? Body language and listening or counseling skills. Tips Get a piece of card and cut it to credit card side. On one side write: There is no such thing as failure - there is only feedback that what I'm doing is not working yet. On the other side write: Mistakes are an inevitable part of the learning process. If you put that piece of card in your wallet with your credit cards you will see and review that often. Those beliefs for me played a critical part in changing my life around. Because while learning and practicing those skills nobody gets it right 100% perfect from the start. Anymore than someone can get behind the wheel of a car and drive well first time. So if is not perfect you just take a step back and say to yourself "hmmm that didn't go so well - so what can I do to make it better next time. It's okay to be kind to yourself. I wish you well

I agree tremendously with this video. Kudos for making it available for everyone to watch. I have one thing to add that might be helpful. Social anxiety for me stemmed from actually disliking myself so much that I did not really have a lot of selfconfidence socially. When i started loving myself, I was okay with just being in the present moment and those negative thought and the negative self image dissapeared. I think when you truly accept who you are and love yourself, you will feel comfortable anywhere being the person you are. Definately possible to work on both things at the same time for even better resulst. Selflove is all you really need in life in my opinion to feel like everything is as it should be.

Wow. And here I thought there might be something useful in this video with all of the thumbs up this vid received. I have social anxiety. And it's not because I care about what other people think. In fact, I know the majority of them don't care. But that doesn't stop me from suffering from anxiety attacks at random times in classroom settings. (Funny, because outside of classroom settings I'm fine.) And they're not mild attacks either. Seems like the best "cure" that actually yields results (that I've found) is improv classes. This video makes you think by absorbing some advice from a 2 minute video, you can change your life instantly. It's not simply to just change the thoughts in your head like the video said, it's a long and arduous process of slowly chipping away your mental barriers , facing your fears over and over again, failing and embarrassing yourself again and again, living with the shame + fear and accepting it for the social anxiety to erode. Changing your thoughts is a first step, a small fraction of the process.

Generally a lot around focussing on different things in my surrounding (apart from other people) so that I don't think too much and can calm down. The one I remember most was called the five senses practice. There you started focussing on everything you see, everything you hear, smell, etc and try to describe it in your mind as detailed as possible. That helped against general anxiety and also heavier panic attacks. Then there were also different relaxation exercises like progressive muscle relaxation, which seemed to help some people, but wasn't really for me. And finally of course the typical behaviour therapy, which was basically taking baby steps forward in the situations, that cause most anxiety and teaching the brain, that this is actually something good and nothing to be afraid of.
@Section9276 жыл бұрын
I have social anxiety only because of experiences I've had in the past of people saying things to me. A lot of people that I've talked to that have social anxiety have never had anything like that in the past, its all beliefs in their head. Mine came from ACTUAL things that have happened in my past, which makes the things that go on in my head even more believable. All of the times I've tried to get a girlfriend I was rejected. I've always been the shy nice guy that never speaks in class. As soon as I said something pretty messed up to someone, which I regret saying, someone hit on me. It's never happened in the past and I froze. I just got really shy and blew the opportunity to get a girlfriend. It seems the girls in high school nowadays only go for the people who are assholes and think highly of themselves, which gives me no chance to get a girlfriend. All of my opportunities now are blown because of the social anxiety and the way I see myself. I'm skinny as well, which also contributes to the point that I'll never get a girlfriend. The only reason she hit on me is that I always wear long sleeves because of the way I see myself. I honestly don't know what to do anymore. It's not common to see guys with social anxiety because its seen as "unmanly," which really stops me from sharing all of this with my friends or anyone I know.

I have suffered from serious social anxiety at times. And, to all of you who say this is bs I'll tell you this: you are probably so self-absorbed that you have NEVER not been. For you, the intensity, focus and discipline it will take you to get through to freedom MUST be radical. You will have to be so harsh on yourself that it will probably scare you. You must SUFFER through the wall that keeps you within your comfort zone. Attack yourself with every tool you find. Curse at your fear! Tell it go go back to hell where it comes from. And, tell it, "I'm going to beat you! You are not going to beat me!" Yell this at it! Invoke your higher power for help. Invoke your spiritual master...become that spiritual master! You are stronger than a thought. Replace thoughts of fear with thoughts of power and peace. To make those thoughts stick, make a 30 minute recording of multiple positively-worded thoughts. Say things like, "I am brilliant. I am interesting. I am confident. People love to see me. I light up a room with my presence. I am peaceful. I make people happy and peaceful. (Don't record anything negatively stated like, "I am not afraid" because this puts the word "afraid" back in your head.) So, once you have this recording done, play it for yourself every time you get in your car plus anywhere else. This method is inspired by cognitive therapy. I use it to overcome any stinking thinking. It works. All you have to overcome are your thoughts. Be aggressive about it. Win!

So, the answer to my symptoms of social anxiety which involve feeling like everyone is looking at me and judging me is now going to be cured by doing the exact thing to others that I feel like they're doing to me?
@deejay94746 жыл бұрын
Learning about body language lessened my social anxiety A LITTLE, and worsened my depression A LOT. Knowing people aren't interested in you doesn't make them like you.

I can tell you that I can read people very easily and that doesn't help with social anxiety. Truthfully, knowing their thoughts make you more anxious. Like if you can see someone doesn't want to be in a conversation then you try to cut it short but then they find it unexpected and think you're just being rude. So you start to reflect on why that interaction was so akward? why that person wanted to leave? Was there a better way to handle that? A lot of the times we get anxious because we're afraid of saying something wrong or coming off as rude or stupid.

I've been suffering Social anxiety for nearly over 2 years now, I was always labeled as the "Sky" Kid until I figured that Social anxiety was a thing and I could relate to all the symptoms. I have no friends at school, I'm lonely. I get paranoid when I'm around people like they are judging me, I get sweaty palms, and a sore achy stomach like I'm going to throw up. I hate being in social situations, and like this guy said.. I get all these thoughts in my head that I think might happen but don't. I'm 14 at the moment, and I've been talking to a school counselor. It's been so tough, and the counselor is useless. My parents don't not, only my sister does but I haven't really spoken to her about it in ages. I'veI been having weird dreams.. A dream of my parents dying, and another one of me being a ghost like I was invisible. This has been so hard, I need help. :(

im rad: Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time of it. Your experience sounds very much like how I used to experience this. (Hug sent) I'm pushed for time right now but If you like I'll see if I can be of help. One question though. You said that you have been suffering social anxiety now for around two years. Does that mean that you never used to have it? Or did something happen to knock your confidence back?
@imrad93717 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure I've always had it as a kid but never knew. But it got worse when I got into Year 9 :(
@greyasagoat7 жыл бұрын
Im rad: I hear what you are saying about it being really tough at the moment. I'm someone who has had personal experience of this, and so hopefully if we look at this together it may be of help. A good first step here would be to make sure that it is actually "social anxiety" that is going on. There are other areas people may find troublesome, which are similar such as self-confidence, self-esteem and assertiveness issues - and although these may overlap to a large degree, they are not exactly the same. IN ORDER TO GET A GOOD QUALITY ANSWER WE HAVE TO ASK A GOOD QUALITY QUESTION So if someone had say "general self -confidence issue" the answer to that would not be the same as with "social anxiety" Its important to be absolutely certain that we are asking the right specific question. Sometimes people may spend an awful lot of time (and money) because they are looking at material which doesn't offer what would be most helpful to them. So can you talk me through an example of how you experience this? I'm in the UK by the way. My spelling may seem a little different. Hope the day is a good one for you
@imrad93717 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that I do have SAD. I hate being around people let alone my friends although I have none as I got into College (Your Highschool but we call our Highschool College) I never have the self esteem, self confidence to do things. I feel like people are always straring at me and judging me. I hate being rejected by groups, I hate doing groupwork and presentations. Groupwork is the worse! Finding people to work with is so hard, and most of the time I have to say to the teacher that I don't have a pair. I have School today but I'm sick. I have a cold :)
@greyasagoat7 жыл бұрын
im rad: Sorry you are not feeling well. Yes, from what you say it does sound as if you may well have social anxiety. Recognizing that and then taking the first steps of looking for a way to deal with it is actually pretty impressive. I'm going to start with a couple of general ideas which hopefully will be of some use. If you want later" we" can do some exploration of social anxiety itself. You may note the word "we" I used there. Because the first thing to know is that there is only one person who is an expert on you - and that expert is you. Sometimes well-meaning people try to help and say read this or do that - but the only person who has your "intuition" is you. What do I mean by that. If you split the word "intuition" you get two words - "in" and "Tuition" "In" as in inner - and "Tuition" as in teaching or teacher. Your intuition is your own inner teacher, and only your inner teacher knows what is best for you. Some people call it a guide and the more we get in touch with that side of ourselves the stronger and wiser we become. Learning to trust ourselves is good practice. Staying with a philosophical overview, its useful to know that in a sense we are all like incomplete jigsaw puzzles. Let's say for argument sake that this world is a school where we come to learn our life lessons. Those life lessons will be different for all of us. The point being that social anxiety doesn't mean that we are in some way inferior to others - because we will have strengths which others don't have. And they will have weaknesses that we don't have. We are not broken like some washing machine and in need of someone to come along and "fix us" we can do that for ourselves. Just that it's a lot faster if you have a gentle prompt now and again from someone who has been down that road. So what exactly does social anxiety really mean? Such an obvious question people rarely ask it. It means feeling anxiety or fear when in a perceived social situation. And if that fear or anxiety is strong enough we get the "stress response" which is what they call the sweaty palms and other physical symptoms you described. I doubt if you will agree with this but that anxiety is actually a good thing - or to be more accurate it has a good intention. At some point when we are small, we touch something really hot. Maybe we get a small burn. And so it is we learn to become wary of things that hurt us physically. The "anxiety" in social anxiety is there to alert us to where we didn't do so well previously and we will have experienced pain at the emotional level. So in order to protect us from that pain, it makes us self-aware. In reality, its trying to both protect us, and also to highlight what we may need to focus our attention on to eliminate the problem in future. PROBLEMS EXIST IN ORDER TO FOCUS OUR ATTENTION ON WHERE WE NEED TO EVOLVE - TO THINK OR ACT IN A NEW WAY. So it's our birthday and a family member has booked us a flying lesson as a present. We are up in the air in our two-seater single engine plane. You are flying at 3000 ft when you notice that the instructor sat behind you is climbing out of his seat and about to jump out of the plane. He is, of course, wearing the only parachute. As he clears the plane, your heart begins to pound and palms go sweaty. Familiar symptoms - this is anxiety, but what is it really telling us. It's telling us that we are at risk because we lack a Skillset. In this case flying skills. Amongst other things its telling us of course. With the social anxiety its telling us that we are at risk emotionally because we lack a skillset In this case its social skills. ITS NOT WRONG TO FEEL ANXIETY OVER NOT HAVING AN IMPORTANT SKILLSET. iT WOULD ACTUALLY BE A LITTLE CRAZY NOT TO FEEL ANXIETY ONCE WE HAVE RECOGNIZED THERE IS AN IMPORTANT SKILLSET MISSING. I appreciate its the last thing in the world we want - and that we want to get rid of it - but thats what its saying to us. I seem to have written quite a lot there. If you are finding that any of this rings true for you may I suggest something. If you can find yourself some cardboard (even an old cereal box will do) and then cut it into credit card size pieces It would be useful to write on them the parts I have written in upper case letters from our first contact. These are empowering statements. Passing through social anxiety and moving beyone is all about personal empowerment. A good strategy for dealing with social anxiety is to change our belief system and self-image. This can be achieved by learning and practising the social skills that the more socially popular have. I think thats enough for now. I wish you well.

What I often noticed at my flat-mate, that she has often her arms crossed, stuff like that but always acts as if we are good friends. Medication and exercise is important as well. I am prescribed 4 1mg tabs of Clonazepam a day. Working out and eating right helps too. I've been doing this since 18... So almost 14 years now. Kudos to those who can beat S.A. without meds, but if your S.A. is keeping you from having friends, relationships, jobs, or even getting out of the house then I strongly recommend seeing a psychiatrist. There's nothing wrong with seeking professional help

I'm slow. I'm anxious for a conversation for the same reason I'd be anxious for a race. It's not that I don't have confidence, it's that I just know conversations put a strain on my mind because everything moves too fast. Incapable of listening and thinking of the next response at the same time. I was never really worried about other people judging me because I was always judging them back anyway :) Anyone else in that boat?
