Always known who they are, didn't like their radio hits and dismissed them as a goth band. Holy shit was I wrong. Watched a concert on YT on a bored whim about three weeks ago, and they blew my mind. Signed, a 63 year old new fan of The Cure!

_"dismissed them as a goth band..."_ ....? No offense but, what's that supposed to mean? There's lots of bands in the Goth/Post Punk genres that are just as good as The Cure (as you now know) and many that are just as iconic. Only thing is, mainstream radio and the mainstream music industry will never acknowledge them cause they're quite content being sycophantic suck-up's to and leeching off the same tired mainstream bands they've seen as guaranteed cash cows over the past 4 - 5 decades. There's a whole world of great rock-related music genres/bands/songs out there, but if you think you're gonna find them on your everyday Top 40/flavor-of-the-day rock/metal stations whilst driving in your car? *_THINK AGAIN..._*
@JM-51502 жыл бұрын
@@RiverOfBlacklights Well The Cure, are not a goth band. They are a post punk band late 70s till present time. As far as other bands that are just as good, maybe a few from that era but not enough to matter. I've seen every tour of the cure since 88. Multiple shows every tour. I haven't seen a band do 3-1/2 hour shows repeatedly night after night other than The Cure. All the bullshit post punk/goth bands are hacks compared to The Cure.

This is the one they opened the concert I attended with, back in 1987. This blew me away to the point that the rest of the show barely registered and/or stuck with me. I had gone to see them play the hits from back then, songs like "Inbetween Days" and "Close To Me". Well, I'm sad (and happy) to report that the entire rest of the setlist kind of faded in the background while I reeled from the indescribable feeling that this tune left me with.

They and their sound just get better with age. It’s hard not to love a band that plays with such unjaded enthusiasm and emotion. “Goth Rock”-naaah: it’s simply fantastic music. Pigeonholing is nonsense with The Cure’s case. Duke Ellington once stated that at a certain level of achievement and commitment to a vision, musicians (and anyone) become “beyond category.” It’s a fitting description for a band who wrote and performed a song like this with such conviction and grit while managing to accomplish the same feat with a song like Love Cats. No cookie-cutter music here, just consistent inventiveness and transformation. Thanks for all the joy, Robert Smith et al.
