"Plainsong" is amazing. Once I was listening to this song in the middle of nowhere, on a very cloudy, windy day, mid Winter. The emotions it delivered to me were indescribable and powerful and I was almost crying, shaking and profoundly moved. If there is a Holy Trinity it must be the first three songs from "Disintegration". "Faith" is very very very underrated.

I’m not ashamed to say “Mint Car” is one of my favourite Cure songs; It may not be complex, or groundbreaking. But, it quite possibly makes me happier than any other song I’ve ever heard. I love The Top and think it should be much higher on the list. Birdmad Girl is one of the best Cure songs. To me, The Top is like God says to Robert Smith, "OK, Robert. You've been a big music fan your whole life, you've been exposed to the best music, and you're an established rock singer-songwriter. Now, what do you REALLY want to do?" And The Top is Robert's answer.

It’s a good album, with some good ideas - I just feel those ideas are better executed on other albums. It was a step in the right direction when the band were trying to find the sound between pop and post punk which I feel they achieved on the three albums that followed it.

Honestly I think the album suffers from the production. I remember one magazine review said it sounds like Robert was just burnt out during the mixing and needed an extra pair of ears in the studio. It’s just kinda tinny and “off” somehow but the songs are great. Shake Dog Shake was a set opener for the longest time and you still can’t mess with The Caterpiller

I started listening to the Cure when Kiss Me x3 and Disintegration were new albums. Both are masterpieces. Head on the Door and Staring at the Sea, the first compilation, were also popular at the time. I often gravitated toward the original "Goth Trilogy" (17 Seconds, Faith, Pornography) and found them all fascinating. Everything the Cure did well in their early years they made great on several of their later records.

Thank you, really! You did a great job in summarizing The Cure's musical history in a few minutes. For me, who grew up completely taken over by this mood, rhytm and lyrics, it is just too much stuff to express in words so shortly. There was always two distinct musical flows to The Cure: their natural heavy, bitter self mocking way to compose and perform and the more comercial guided thing required by a big contract. The Cure is everything you said and more. Ocassionally I take my time to rediscover The Cure and it is always great.

100% agreed. I was 15 when Disintegration came out and for a number of years I tought it was their masterpiece... but 30+ years on... for me their best albums are the ones I keep coming back to - - more than the others - that haven't really aged... that are timeless... and that for me is Seventeen Seconds and Faith. Half of Wish is great - and the b-sides are better than some of the album tracks. Friday I'm in Love is like a nursery rhyme crossed with a toothpaste commercial... and of all their post Wish output - there are probably just enough truly great songs to fit on one album. 1 Seventeen Seconds 2 Faith 3 Head on the Door 4 Disintegration 5 Pornography 6 KMx3 7 The Top 8 Japanese Whispers 9 Boys Don't Cry / TIB 10 Wish 11 Bloodflowers 12 WMS 13 The Cure 14 4:13 Dream

I've been a fan of The Cure since hearing Love Song, Just Like Heaven and Lullaby on the radio growing up. I heard Disintegration when I was about 16 and thought it was pretty amazing, but then didn't really get into The Cure until some edgy friends introduced me to all of the back catalogue as I was going through some rough emotional shit in my late teens. I went to their Wish tour concert in 1992 and saw how incredible they are live, and have been to every concert of theirs near me since. I mostly agree with your listing and comments and can honestly say my top three are: 1. Disintegration, 2. Pornography and a tie between 3. Faith and 17 Seconds. My favourite tracks are A Forest, Fascination Street, A Strange Day and All Cats are Grey. Simon's bass is sublime, Robert's guitar is unmistakeably recognisable and his lyricism is beautiful and poetic. An iconic band that my kids know - I am glad to say they have grown up listening to The Cure and I hope they love them as much as I do.

4:13 is massively underrated in my opinion. I didn't like it much when it came out and forgot about it. Gave it another try during lockdown and after a few listens it clicked. It's a real slow burner, songs like Switch and It's Over are immense, typical Robert rants. I saw an interview somewhere where Robert said The Hungry Ghost is one of his favourite songs he's written. Then he said that people don't really appreciate it because it's not culturally relevant, unlike A Forest. When he said that, it changed my whole mindset towards the album and I just listen to the songs for their own sake now. The Cure don't hold the same place in music as they did 25 - 30 years ago but they are still a sincere band with their own vision and way of doing things. I'd put that album in my top 5 Cure albums

One of my favorite songs by The Cure and of all time has to be Doing The Unstuck off of Wish. I can't quite describe why but it just is; I don't even have a specific memory attached to it. I first saw it was a fun song to drive fast to but the more I listened to it the more I began to enjoy and appreciated it. There's something serene but faced paced, soft but rough, and just overall a beautiful track. I feel as if I'm being taken away from the hardships of this life and being transported to another world. There's an overarching feeling of escape and bliss (probably because of Robert's frequent drug use and the line "Let's get happy"). Every instrument and layer feels perfect to me. It just brings me so much joy.

Just started listening to the cure, first album I heard was pornography, don't know if I should have started with this album, but it was the thing that I felt like listening to the most. Loved every song in it, and some songs I went crazy about, like "one hundred years", and "cold", which I think are the 2 most depressing/dark tracks, but also my favorites. Loved that album a fuck lot. Definitely excited to listen to more of their stuff

A good video and a very good explanation of all the Cure records. The dark trinity albums (17 Seconds, Faith, & Pornography) and the ‘Boris’ period albums( HOTD, KMKMKM, Disintegration, Wish) are my personal favorites. That being said, I am a fan of the Cure’s entire catalog but I just like certain albums a little more than others.

I grew up with The Cure, been a fan since 1985 and my order is completely different: 1. The Head On The Door 2. Pornography 3. Seventeen Seconds 4. Faith 5. Disintegration 6. The Top 7. Bloodflowers 8. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me 9 . Wish 10. Three Imaginary Boys / Boys Don't Cry 11. Japanese Whispers 12. Wild Mood Swings 13. The Cure 14. 4:13 Dream I also need to mention that I really have a dislike for some of their most popular songs like Friday I'm In Love, Love Cats or Lullaby... I prefer their dark and brooding stuff and songs like The Last Day of Summer, Disintegration, A Strange Day, Want, Just One Kiss or Faith are what makes me happy as a fan.

_Wish_ is my mother's favorite Cure album, and after picking it up at a thrift store and listening to it, I can definitely see why. The whole disc is a roller coaster of emotions, sending you to blissful highs (High, Doing The Unstuck, Friday I'm In Love) before plummeting you to deep, dark lows (Trust, Open, A Letter To Elise). My personal favorite is still _Disintegration_ for its darker, more gothic tone, but _Wish_ comes a very close second.

Thanks Sam.. really interesting. We're pretty much in agreement in terms of worst to best. As you say, even on the worst albums, there are some gems (often the first song!), but with an album like WMS, even though there are tracks I really like, the singles and other "poppy" numbers are just so dire that I can't bear it. I feel lucky to live in an age where I can choose my favourite tracks from some of these worst albums and make a playlist avoiding the horrors. 🥰 Disintegration all the way, however. Wow. What an album.

Wonderful breakdown. Can't argue with Disintegration, it's easily one of the 100 greatest albums of all time. The special thing about the remainder of The Cure's discography is that each album's greatness will be determined by what time of a person's life that they listened to it. For me personally Pornography remains the greatest Cure album because it arrived at a time in my life when I was confused and felt the world was conspiring against me. It spoke to me on a molecular level in sound and aesthetic. It influenced my art, my writing, my photography, my dressing, my language. It was, for all intents and purposes, the most true thing that existed in my life at that moment. It started the foundation of a series of albums that would speak to me on similar levels: Depeche Mode's 'Violator', Nine Inch Nails' 'The Downward Spiral' and Public Enemy's 'Fear of a Black Planet.' I wouldn't have been able to personally access those records if it weren't for Pornography.

If I was doing the list today I’d probably put it one one spot higher, depending on how I’m feeling it’s probably better than Wish but in saying that Wish is still such a great album. But all those albums on my list from Boys Don’t Cry onwards I’d listen to more often than Faith. I gave it an 8/10, but The Cure are such a good band even an 8/10 record may be ‘lower’ on my list. Faith is also arguably better than their debut but their debut offers a different type of sound that I love whereas Faith sometimes feels like Seventeen Seconds Part 2 and I’d just rather listen to Seventeen Seconds. So yeah, it’s tough!

You forgot perhaps their best album: Join the Dots (the B Sides), so many gems ;-) Oh and "Mixed Up", excellent album of remixes. Their lives are great too. Joke aside, interesting to see your list. Wish is a masterpiece. Bloodflowers felt like a goodbye. I never got into the latest 2, and can't even remember any songs. Kiss Me is perfect, but most albums from Faith onwards work cohesively: each song brings something. Wild Mood Swings was weird: Jupiter Crash is excellent, Want just fell flat when the beat entered (I saw them live on that tour...). And Bloodflowers felt like they sobered up, were not trying to be, but were themselves (unlike Wild Mood Swings). I seem to remember David Allen producing most albums, before they changed their sound - and started sounding confused to my ears. Thanks for this video, I enjoyed it.

Pretty neat ranking. Can't complain too much on the sequence, it's a personal preference I guess. For me, the top 5 would be 1. Disintegration 2. Faith 3. Head on the door 4. Japanese whispers 5. I only put WMS up a bit higher on the list because it was the tour I first saw them on. Fun fact, my first Cure gig was also where the Gone video was filmed in 1996. it was at The Great Western Forum in Inglewood, CA. I got to see them about 4 more times btw between 1997-2000 (probably why I enjoyed Bloodflowers a bit more too). Been a fan since at least 1986 and have never looked back. So psyched that not only is Wish FINALLY getting the deluxe reissue treatment but we're (hopefully) getting a new freaking album later this year (with Reeves Gabrels!). Cure for life! EDIT: My two all time, tied for #1 Cure albums are Disintegration & Pornography (in that order). So my list goes as follows: 13. 4:13 Dream 12. The Cure (agreed that it's a great album overall but it's the production that kills it for me) 11. Bloodflowers (only in this spot because IMHO, it starts off amazing then falls flat midway...but the closer title cut is divine....especially live). 10. Wild Mood Swings (in this spot only because I first saw them live on this tour...so I'm a bit biased) 9. Japanese Whispers 8. Faith/Carnage Visors 7. Seventeen Seconds 6. The Top 5. The Head On The Door 4. Wish 3. Three Imaginary Boys/Boys Don't Cry 2. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me 1. Disintegration/Pornography (tied because these both have seen the most plays by me)

I really enjoyed the video and you know your stuff. I would agree with your assessment of the last four releases. But having anticipated each new release from Disintegration onwards, I have to say that Wish was a bit of a disappointment at the time. Place it side by side with The Top and you will see the undeniable creativity in the latter album verses Robert’s attempts to produce a big seller in Wish. It took me years to truly appreciate The Top and it probably came with a listen to those songs live in concert where they truly came to life. Anyway, thanks.

Thanks for watching! Wish is definitely an album where Robert Smith was playing it safe, but I think it still comes together as being a super strong album. So on it’s own merit, I think it manages to balance the light and the dark very well, it’s just that other Cure records do it even better! High and From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea are two of my personal favourite Cure songs. The Top they definitely start to push boundaries and enter the ground of pop sensibilities but I think they only nail it when they reach Head on the Door and Kiss Me

@@samuelwills4637 fair enough. The Top is admittedly ‘out there’ but I almost always value taking creative risk over playing it safe.
