"Plainsong" is amazing. Once I was listening to this song in the middle of nowhere, on a very cloudy, windy day, mid Winter. The emotions it delivered to me were indescribable and powerful and I was almost crying, shaking and profoundly moved. You've been a big music fan your whole life, you've been exposed to the best music, and you're an established rock singer-songwriter. Now, what do you REALLY want to do?" And The Top is Robert's answer.

It’s a good album, with some good ideas - I just feel those ideas are better executed on other albums. It was a step in the right direction when the band were trying to find the sound between pop and post punk which I feel they achieved on the three albums that followed it.

Thank you, really! You did a great job in summarizing The Cure's musical history in a few minutes. For me, who grew up completely taken over by this mood, rhytm and lyrics, it is just too much stuff to express in words so shortly. There was always two distinct musical flows to The Cure: their natural heavy, bitter self mocking way to compose and perform and the more comercial guided thing required by a big contract. The Cure is everything you said and more. Ocassionally I take my time to rediscover The Cure and it is always great.

Rating their albums can be quite vacillating. I grew up watching mtv in the middle of the night and remember seeing The Cure on there and liking their music and style. Then around 1988 is when i really got into them and once Disintegration came out I constantly agreed with Stan in South Park, that it was the greatest album ever! But… there was a time in high school where Pornography was the best album. Summer of 1992 Kiss me was my favorite. On the other hand, when Wish came out, i was torn. I heard High on college radio and loved it, then when the album came out i picked it up the day it was released and listened to it over and over to a point i disected it so much that I lost interest in. But now I’m back to appreciating it…. A specific mood, place, time, company, and even a sense of nostalgia can keep the list of favorite Cure songs/albums constantly evolving.

I started listening to the Cure when Kiss Me x3 and Disintegration were new albums. Both are masterpieces. Head on the Door and Staring at the Sea, the first compilation, were also popular at the time. I often gravitated toward the original "Goth Trilogy" (17 Seconds, Faith, Pornography) and found them all fascinating. Everything the Cure did well in their early years they made great on several of their later records.

I've been a fan of The Cure since hearing Love Song, Just Like Heaven and Lullaby on the radio growing up. I heard Disintegration when I was about 16 and thought it was pretty amazing, but then didn't really get into The Cure until some edgy friends introduced me to all of the back catalogue as I was going through some rough emotional shit in my late teens. I went to their Wish tour concert in 1992 and saw how incredible they are live, and have been to every concert of theirs near me since. I mostly agree with your listing and comments and can honestly say my top three are: 1. Disintegration, 2. Pornography and a tie between 3. Faith and 17 Seconds. My favourite tracks are A Forest, Fascination Street, A Strange Day and All Cats are Grey. Simon's bass is sublime, Robert's guitar is unmistakeably recognisable and his lyricism is beautiful and poetic. An iconic band that my kids know - I am glad to say they have grown up listening to The Cure and I hope they love them as much as I do.

4:13 is massively underrated in my opinion. I didn't like it much when it came out and forgot about it. Gave it another try during lockdown and after a few listens it clicked. It's a real slow burner, songs like Switch and It's Over are immense, typical Robert rants. I saw an interview somewhere where Robert said The Hungry Ghost is one of his favourite songs he's written. Then he said that people don't really appreciate it because it's not culturally relevant, unlike A Forest. When he said that, it changed my whole mindset towards the album and I just listen to the songs for their own sake now. The Cure don't hold the same place in music as they did 25 - 30 years ago but they are still a sincere band with their own vision and way of doing things. I'd put that album in my top 5 Cure albums

Wish is a masterpiece. Bloodflowers felt like a goodbye. I never got into the latest 2, and can't even remember any songs. Kiss Me is perfect, but most albums from Faith onwards work cohesively: each song brings something. Wild Mood Swings was weird: Jupiter Crash is excellent, Want just fell flat when the beat entered (I saw them live on that tour...). And Bloodflowers felt like they sobered up, were not trying to be, but were themselves (unlike Wild Mood Swings). I seem to remember David Allen producing most albums, before they changed their sound - and started sounding confused to my ears. Thanks for this video, I enjoyed it.

The whole disc is a roller coaster of emotions, sending you to blissful highs (High, Doing The Unstuck, Friday I'm In Love) before plummeting you to deep, dark lows (Trust, Open, A Letter To Elise). One of my favorite songs by The Cure and of all time has to be Doing The Unstuck off of Wish. I can't quite describe why but it just is; I don't even have a specific memory attached to it. I first saw it was a fun song to drive fast to but the more I listened to it the more I began to enjoy and appreciated it. There's something serene but faced paced, soft but rough, and just overall a beautiful track. I feel as if I'm being taken away from the hardships of this life and being transported to another world. There's an overarching feeling of escape and bliss (probably because of Robert's frequent drug use and the line "Let's get happy"). Every instrument and layer feels perfect to me. It just brings me so much joy.

Thanks, I really enjoyed listening to your ranking and your thoughts on each album. It really resonated with me. The main albums I differ with you on are Wild Mood Swings and Bloodflowers. I'd put Wish higher as well. My list is: 1. Disintegration (1989) 2. Wish (1992) 3. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me…(1987) 4. Pornography (1982) 5. Wild Mood Swings (1996) 6. Seventeen Seconds (1980) 7. Head On The Door (1985) 8. Faith (1981) 9. Bloodflowers (2000) 10. The Top (1984) 11. Three Imaginary Boys/ Boys Don’t Cry (1979) 12.The Cure (2004) 13. Japanese Whispers (1983) 14. 4:13 Dream (2008) From what I've heard of the first 4 songs coming out of their new album 'Songs of a Lost World', it could rank quite high on the list, they sound incredible!

This confirms, as I always felt, that The Cure stopped being brilliant after 1994. Wish was the last great album.
@samuelwills46373 жыл бұрын
I do personally enjoy their self titled record, but Wish definitely is their last great record. People love Bloodflowers though, you can see in the comment section! Bloodflowers is too hit and miss with the tracklist though for me to ever call it great.
@MrMurph733 жыл бұрын
@@samuelwills4637 agreed. I just think their whole style changed after Wish. They lost their edge and versatility. MOst material since then has been a dirge of guitars with less variety and colour than previous work. Thanks for the video anyway!
@cameleonfleuri3 жыл бұрын
@@MrMurph73 Wow! Thank you, that's the commentary I was looking for! You perfectly resume my thoughts but with better words. It's exactly that. After Wish, they lost good part of their whimsical lightness, their experimental craziness, the exoticness and diversity of their music flavors.... I don't hate it but it sounds more like a cringy noisy mash-up. So I have to admit that I almost completely stopped listening to them. But if they ever release a new album, I hope it's going to be full of wacky freshiness! 😜

Thanks Sam.. really interesting. We're pretty much in agreement in terms of worst to best. As you say, even on the worst albums, there are some gems (often the first song!), but with an album like WMS, even though there are tracks I really like, the singles and other "poppy" numbers are just so dire that I can't bear it. I feel lucky to live in an age where I can choose my favourite tracks from some of these worst albums and make a playlist avoiding the horrors. 🥰 Disintegration all the way, however. Wow. What an album.
@maciejkedziora22603 жыл бұрын
wow, I couldn't expect Bloodflowers under recent two albums. I prefer gothic post-punk oriented Cure (80-82) with Disintegration ahead. Good list! Can you do the same thing with Depeche Mode? ;)

Wonderful breakdown. Can't argue with Disintegration, it's easily one of the 100 greatest albums of all time. The special thing about the remainder of The Cure's discography is that each album's greatness will be determined by what time of a person's life that they listened to it. For me personally Pornography remains the greatest Cure album because it arrived at a time in my life when I was confused and felt the world was conspiring against me. It spoke to me on a molecular level in sound and aesthetic. It influenced my art, my writing, my photography, my dressing, my language. It was, for all intents and purposes, the most true thing that existed in my life at that moment. It started the foundation of a series of albums that would speak to me on similar levels: Depeche Mode's 'Violator', Nine Inch Nails' 'The Downward Spiral' and Public Enemy's 'Fear of a Black Planet.' I wouldn't have been able to personally access those records if it weren't for Pornography.

Samuel, thanks a lot for this video… but i really think that you would but Faith higher if you would listen to it more often. The drowning man, all cats are grey and faith are all in my top 10 cure songs… they give me goosebumps. And espeicially the live version of faith in Orange or on the deluxe album
@samuelwills46372 жыл бұрын
If I was doing the list today I’d probably put it one one spot higher, depending on how I’m feeling it’s probably better than Wish but in saying that Wish is still such a great album. But all those albums on my list from Boys Don’t Cry onwards I’d listen to more often than Faith. I gave it an 8/10, but The Cure are such a good band even an 8/10 record may be ‘lower’ on my list. Faith is also arguably better than their debut but their debut offers a different type of sound that I love whereas Faith sometimes feels like Seventeen Seconds Part 2 and I’d just rather listen to Seventeen Seconds. So yeah, it’s tough!

I love this line up of albums and the enthusiasm; music making "your soul ascend to heaven" is very evocative imagery. I agree with the number one choice.
