I was into bodybuilding in the early 80s. Every man, woman and dog who even looked at a barbell back then would’ve heard of Bertil Fox. Same for Albert Beckles one of the oldest bodybuilders to win a professional bodybuilding contest in the prime category. They were top flight professionals and were in nearly every bodybuilding mags during the 1980s. Bertil was heavily tipped to win the Mr. Olympia several times in his career. But he just didn’t want to play the game the Weiders wanted him to play and instead protested. Bertil Fox, Sergio Oliva and Serge Nubret grumbled about the Weiders and their corrupt IFBB long before Lee Priest famously stepped out of line and was banned from IFBB competitions.
@warren14567Ай бұрын
I suspect IFBB was involved in destroying Bertil fox since they hated him included the elite black bodybuilders like Monson ,Sergio, black prince who had to be put in the closet....

Wow I’ve never heard of him. This story was so well told!!❤❤❤❤ . 2 things: I had a close girlfriend who started bodybuilding and the money and time they spend on competitions can lead to major debt if they don’t win. Also black competitors often face discrimination. She eventually quit competing and now just supports women as a trainer. 2, ROID RAGE is very real and men who take high levels of those steroids and androgens can be very abusive and violent. I definitely feel he should be included when it comes to black history and bodybuilding and that his life is a cautionary tale.
@RochellB462 ай бұрын
Black people actually dominate in bodybuilding they are genetically built better than white men they usually have small waist and big upper body so not sure who said that I’m actually in the community my bf is white he literally just lost a show to a black guy 😂 I’m also black myself not sure where you heard that

What a really sad story. All I remember is that Bertil Fox was one of the big-name 80s bodybuilders I used to watch on TV and in magazines when I was a teen and was first gettingt into BB. I never knew any of this. Such a tragic ending to such potential. I think getting that undeserved 5th place had a seismic effect on him, and possibly led to his mental downfall. Very sad indeed. I'm not sure if he was guilty or not, there certainly was some questionable parts to his story, especially just leaving without calling for medical assistance. But he served 25 years. I hope he lives out the rest of his days with peace in his heart. As far as his BB legacy, he certainly was one of the true greats.

He should take accountability for his actions. He got involved with an immature 19 year old who couldn't think for herself and had a greedy mother. Then, he left her in charge of his property while he was away. After realizing the property was stolen, and that the women had it, instead of making a police report, he started a confrontation about it. His story doesn't add up, with the gun "accidentally" going off not just once, but several times. Then, he confessed the whole thing right after it happened. It is what it is, and 25 years means he got off pretty easy for the death of two people. Choose your relationships wisely.

Bertil Fox was an awesome bodybuilder and arguably the strongest in his era. He was in incredible shape and won the 1982 NABBA Universe. At the 1983 Mr Olympia he was in magnificent condition, but the judges placed him 5th and audience boos were so loud it rocked the Olympic Hall. That day, he was superior to those before him including second place Mohamed Makkawy and third place Lee Haney. Only the winner Samir Bannout could have edged him. Bertil never recovered from that robbery. Cries of beef it Bertil from crowds, must still ring in his ears.

I heard this story once before but not in so much detail. Aside from how sad this situation is for the victims, it blew my mind to find out the man started juicing at 14 years old. I thought it was only Gen Z tik tok tren kids that did that. I can't imagine how much damage he did to his body and mind .... That story he came up with was complete cap. I think he flipped out and probably had a lot of remorse after. In situations like this where the person already has a history of extreme abuse, its hard to believe those hail Mary situations.

There's a lot of politics in body building. Those on the outside of this think it's just about who has the biggest biceps and triceps. But him griping after he lost he sealed his fate. And he did have an amazing physique💪🏿
@majortwang23962 ай бұрын
'Politics' is the wrong word. It was business. Joe Weider employed all the pro bodybuilders to advertise his products & appear in his magazines. The contests were officially independent, but the IFBB was run by his brother & part of the business, so he had a lot of influence, and guys who wouldn't play his game were sidelined. I trained at the same gym as Fox in the late 70s, and knew him slightly. The guy wasn't likeable at all - he was grumpy & had a chip on his shoulder. Admittedly, it wasn't the best time to be a black guy, but others in his circle like Al Beckles & Brian Buchanan managed to rise above it.
