I read that some Zoo animals bob their heads up and down when they turn mentally insane due to being in isolated captivity unfortunately. Great vlog Shay! Awesome presentation
@MARIANAMRLS1110 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is true. I don't know the name in english but in spanish is: Estereotipia which actually means a repetitive behavior that does not benefit the animal in any way. You can see this mostly in felines like if you go to the zoo and see a lion walking three steps then going back three steps and so. This happens because they are given food they dont hunt, they don't have toys or a rich environment

@boredmuch1210 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct. It is sad to see but the general public usually think it's 'cute' or 'hilarious' that animals display behaviours shown in this vlog, and often anthropomorphise these behaviours (such as when Colette said to Brock that the elephant was 'dancing'). It is in fact called 'stereotypy' and is a result of a lack of mental stimulation, or placing animals in an environment that hinders natural behaviours. For example, wild elephants tend to walk quite far each day in search of food, so when they're captive in zoos they are obviously unable to carry out this natural behaviour and therefore act out by head bobbing, swaying etc. You'll also see stereotypy in big cats that are unable to hunt and be the predators they're born to be, and will therefore pace. Unfortunately people continue to visit zoos and animals continue to be held captive in enclosures that are simply not suitable. As a qualified Zoologist who majored in Animal Behaviour and Physiology, I'm saddened when I see these things. It's not like the research and resources aren't there to know how to help these animals. When these issues arise, it is an animal welfare issue, and the keepers and administrators have a lot to answer to.

"Confined in a small space with very few, if any, social partners and minimal or no autonomy over their lives, zoo elephants have very little to do each day. Being intelligent animals, they become bored. Boredom itself leads to a variety of behavioral problems including heightened aggression, in some cases, and neurotic or stereotypic behavior, such as rocking back and forth, swaying from side to side or bobbing the head up and down." Dancing... or slowly going insane? You decide...

that elefant is going crazy! Big animals like that should have more space to roame around. I've seen quite some animals acting like that, repeating one movement over and over again, when they are in captivity. It is sad although we love to see these animals in real life, and can't do that unless they are captivated.. I think you have the most amasing channel and I admire you all. Love from Denmark!

That elephant is not dancing. It is called stereotypic behavior. When elephants are in captivity they do not develop these unnatural rhythmic movements. It looks funny, but truly it's a tick that these animals develop from being confined from the outside world where they have to survive. These behaviors show the animal is going "crazy" or almost losing its mind. It is very sad.
@MyRandomnessShow10 жыл бұрын
Elephant's confinement in unnatural zoo enclosures causes them stress, thus, they display neurotic behaviors like repetitive head bobbing, swaying and rocking.

they also do this to calm them selves they will do odd things because normally they are busy surviving so they get bored his bobbing is prally from like u said or he was calming his self or they need to take them out for a stroll and interact with them more

I worked in zoos for many years with all animals from small parrots to elephants, and for the people wondering about the elephant and bashing zoos, i'd urge you to do a lot more research. Elephants are being killed by the thousands each year in the wild. In fact, over 300 elephants are estimated to be killed each year in Kenya alone. The focus of a lot of zoos now days are to provide a naturalistic habitat for these animals, enrichment to keep them from being bored and to bring out natural behaviors i.e. hunting and foraging, breeding, and educating the public about these creatures. Most zoos today serve as a safe haven for animals that are otherwise being destroyed and going extinct in the wild. Many zoos today work towards keeping a steady and healthy population of animals in captivity(while giving them a life as similar to them being in thr wild as possible) in a hope that they can one day be returned to the wild. The elephant bobbing his head is not necesssrily stress, it could also be just a behavior that he does.
@detectivehawk497610 жыл бұрын
First of all Tom Bombadil, I missed you in the Lord Of the Rings movie lol. Well said I agree, though I would use the term "confined" very loosely. Because as I have mentioned before, many zoos do the best that they can to provide animals with the most naturalistic exhibit possible and provide lots of enrichment for them to reduce stress and boredom.While the elephant might possibly be stressed out, people saying that zoos are cruel and turn the animals loose dont realize that doing that does more harm then good. Zoos are nowhere near as bad as they used to be back in the day. No cages, chains...
@wondlorland10 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are great zoos but the LA zoo is not one of them. Elephants do not bob their heads in the wild. This is a stereotypic behavior which indicates that their needs are not being met. Also, there are still several zoos around the world that are absolutely horrible. In 2004, 2 gorillas were inhumanly killed at the Giza Zoo. Don't even get me started on the Mumbai Zoo or Tirana Zoo where animals are dying at a horrifically sad rate. Cages and chains are not at all a thing of the past.
@detectivehawk497610 жыл бұрын
That sounds awesome man. There are definitely some sanctuaries that take great care of the animals. Do you by any chance know what it's called? I would love to check them out.
