This thing blows the venova and xaphoon over the water and its yet its made with such affordable materials. The branching tube making it an open tube resonator is genius!

Wow, it just occurred to me this could be used to correct the octave problem with cylindrical bagpipes as well. Ever tried it with a membrane reed?

So, you killed Yamaha's Venova, your model sounds better to my ear. Could you make something more "production ready" and sell for, say, 50 USD? I'd buy one.

While I definitely dig the plastic funnel look, I'd love to see one of these with two nice shiny brass trumpet bells... it looks like an alien instrument from a '60s sci-fi, you could busk with this and just watch people's bewilderment :)

Hi Linsey, thanks for the videos, I've really enjoyed making all your fun designs. where abouts in Aus are you based? I predominantly play flamenco, and classical indian music (sitar) would love to have a chat about designs (tuning polypipes to hijaz or raag intonations). Thanks again.

Hi Linsey, I've been watching you're videos almost as an addiction at this point, I've even made my own Mr Curly and I was wondering if you could tell me the measurements of this as it's not in your book
@SquealyD6 жыл бұрын
Hi Louis the measurements are in the book "Make your own Mr Curly and other clarinets" from my website linseypollak.com
@louischappellholmes27086 жыл бұрын
Linsey Pollak I have the book, it's not in there

Maybe you have the book "Mrs Curly and the Norwegian smoking Pipe"? The eBook "Make your own Mr Curly and other clarinets" does have the measurements for Mr Curly. If you are talking about the Cylisax this is a new instument and so isn't in the book. I will eventually post a video with the measurements

This is amazing. I am in awe of you thinking of this in the first place. I don't want to downplay that but seeing what you've done here I immediately wondered: have you thought about trying to make at the top end closeable with a valve or something? (creating a low register where it would behave like a clarinet again; there might be a more jarring register break there than a lot of instruments but if it works it would ad an octave to the bottom. It is possible?)
@SquealyD7 жыл бұрын
you can do that but the lower octave clarinet tuning is way out!
@ne0romantic7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the response! I guess I was wondering if it's possible tweak things like the length of the branch and the length of the mouthpiece section to get it closer, but there is much I don't understand about how those things affect the tuning of the other (main) registers you've designed it to actually play in... Also a valve could remove the branch entirely or a in a similar instrument without the bell a key could just close the end. Would somewhere in between this options lead to an in tune chalumeau register? Perhaps the question could be can it be made so the lower octave tuning is way out in such a way that its in tune but different notes? But that means the it would have a different fingering which makes it less elegant. It's still an attractive idea to me. It seems there are two main advantages to the Cylisax over the conical sax... one is the hobby maker can find cylindrical pipes easier than something like specific conical ones (and/or something like size in general, perhaps this sax takes up less space in the case,) and the other could be this it is so very similar to a cylindrical clarinet it might be possible to make an instrument that does both. If this keeps bugging me I will do some experiments but it will be a long time till I have anything if there's even anything there.
@SquealyD7 жыл бұрын
changing the length of the branch affects both the overall tuning and also the intonation of the harmonic. ie: it needs to be a certain length to have the 2nd register and octave above the fundamental note
@ne0romantic7 жыл бұрын
Thanks again. So if you close the top and create a "way out" low register, is that register sharp or flat? (If you close at the end of the branch?) (at the beginning of the branch?) or is it more complicated and the scale for the low register out of wack as well? It seems it should be possible to make it close anywhere along the branch or even past the end of the branch (if you build one without the bell) and act like it's when longer closed than open, and that this change should practically only affect the added low register when it's closed, so if it's just a question of sharpening or flattening that register maybe just finding the right length to close it to could work?
