The thought of the party encountering one, and it just laughing at them so hard when it sees that the fighter or paladin has a magic sword that it no longer becomes a combat encounter is very amusing.

I like the idea that it gets into a fight, recognises the verbal components of the spells are all old Netherese or Ancient Elven words and then just gets hit with grandpa level nostalgia for The Good Old Days and has to take a second to sit down and think about stuff.

Fun Fact: Among her many different magical experiments, the ancient blue dragon Iymrith has developed a unique 9th level spell called "Force Burn", designed to kill Phaerimm (though it's also pretty deadly to all spell casters), allowing her to establish her lair in the Anauroch Desert without being overrun by them.

I think the idea is that Phaerimm have no reason to change so the prison would hold them indefinitely. Everything about them means they would not doubt themselves enough to change their ways. They are a predatory and parasitic race that no only views themselves as superior to all other races but only has a use for those other races when they want to reproduce. And not as pleasure toys.

@@TaCo0oCaT Or, you could have the Phaerim inside become "Feral" and forget their old ways, abandoning magic, and becoming mindless monsters, because of a thousand years of infighting, starvation and inbreeding. And the Phaerim from outside not realizing it, because the messages only go one way.

the ones inside the prison are the ones that lived there BEFORE there was a prison. and they were fine until they had their magic taken. now the netherese are gone (except for shade's return) and the magic they used that took from the phaerimm is gone. so they have no reason to change their culture or to leave. so why would one group become more or less evolved than the other?

A few extra bit of lore I barely remember: The Netherese empire created creatures called "Tomb tappers" which are magic searching constructs that are faceless and have a enormous maw on their stomach which is always very cool, they were specifically created (or atleast modified) to try and defend against the Phaerimm threat, with em being one of the few creatures able to resist the Phaerimm mind control. Phaerimm also do not requiere ANY component to cast a spell, mainly done "through will alone", which is most likely why charisma is their main spell stat as a way to "measure" that will in a way. And they normally try to study and find ways to make other spells work that way for themselves.

Karsus used it to become Mystrl (Mystra's former incarnation). But obvious, removing the god of magic even for a second to become one, does some funky shit and turns out the weave doesn't like funky shit and it quite literally snapped. Magic was rendered null until Mystra reformed it and instituted the rule that mortals will only ever be able to cast spells of the 9th level at the highest (mechanically it meant you could still have higher spell slots just no more spells unlocked that corresponded, with 10th and higher spell slots acting as a spells that where casted using Quickened Spell from Sorcerer)

I feel like the reason these guys use charisma to cast their spells is because they understand them on such a fundamental level that they only need to speak the spell to cast it kinda like words of power. The only thing that impacts the spells outcome (their roll) is how well the pronounce the words of the spell.

What was left out of the video is that Phaerimm eat magic. This is why they manipulate it so well. They have to or they will die. Magic is both the air they breathe and the food they eat. So to them harnessing it is really just an act of will. Fun fact: they talk by manipulating magic to force air currents to move in a way that creates the sounds they wish. As a bonus it is super creepy sounding so of course they are fine with talking to their lessers. As causing fear and subservience in such pathetic creatures is just the Phaerimm way.

Made a whole homebrew world / continent where one of the inciting incidents or signs that something was very, very wrong was Phaerimm waking up. In this twist, the only way to destroy them also ruined the continent: Everything was dead. No water, no plants, no life. Just dead wasteland. At least that is what the people believe. The party encountered the last one, 25 years after the war has ended. It took over a whole village, the villagers worshipped it in a twisted way and it was the only peaceful and green oasis on the whole continent. Of course, once the party discovered the Phaerimm, all hell broke loose. Life got turned into twisted plant-versions of themselves, the forest turned against the adventurers, creatures of myth and legend like the Barometz appeared, and so on. The more dangerous it got, the higher the rewards were. But at the end... there was only the Phaerimm in its underground lair under a tree, in a pool of water feeding its strange magics. It was tense. They barely made it, despite being really high level at the time. And having the help of a Tomb Tapper at the very end. Anyways, Phaerimm can and should be incredibly unnerving and dangerous. There is no way these plants should be that great at magic.

Forgotten Realms canon actually had the Sharn Wall breached, the old Netherese return (with Shar's shadow-weave), and most of the Phaerimm where hunted to near extinction. There was actually a trilogy of Forgotten Realms books that focused on some of this plot line.

From what i remember from a trilogy of novels that were kind of set in the time of Nethril is the Phaerimm actually tried talk to the Netherese .. but because the surface empire of Netheril was so enfused with magical energy every time they tried to reach the surface to try & communicate they would apparently just explode. The Netheril Trilogy: Sword Play, Dangerous Games, Mortal Consequences are the 3 novels from the late 90's that cover it.

I really don't want to know what Phaerimming entails (or do I?) 😆 I'm interested in the Warlock-ish angle to these weirdos. I have this plot hook idea about a party member whose patron is an ancient/powerful Phaerimm that's effectively dominated them. Perhaps they're still trapped in the prison, or are using the party member to escape somehow...but I think it could be an interesting plot twist to DM. Also, it feels like Dune was another strong inspiration here, not just Alien...they change the ecosystem to deserts, big pointy teeth, they're shaped like fleshli- I mean sock tubes...all that's missing is some spice and some explosive aversion to water 😁 Thanks as always, Josiah! See you next week, hopefully! 🤞🏼

We may be too late in the season for these to be produced, but it would be fun to see a wintery or light-celebration themed series. Akin to the Halloween series. Perhaps the monsters are drawn from folklore, such as Krampus, Yule Cat, Gryla and the Yule Lads, Frau Perchta, etc. (And naturally, pulling from sources where it's appropriate, i.e., not doing the wendingo without involvement of someone within the Algonquian-speaking community.)

I’m just imagining a wise old wizard fighting a Phaerimm, getting egged by the tail before dying by the wizard’s magic. The wizard then figures out it’s a parasitic egg, removes it, but places it in a warm cow for it to feast upon birth for study. The wizard will then continue to study it in a cage until he realizes that it’s a sentient creature, and proceeds to adopt it like it’s his son/daughter. As an NPC, this wizard could be sought after by the party due to knowing so much and possibly knowing the weakness of a monster they need to slay. In the middle of the party’s conversation, the adopted Phaerimm child barges to ask a question. The party sees a horrifying leech-like creature enter the room with a bottomless mouth and various claw-like hands. “Hey dad, how do I cast Fireball? I’ve been trying to work out the mana overflow with the delayed timing, but I can’t quite get it down. It keeps turning into Firebolt instead.” The wizard is not phased, “Did you carry the remainder for the mana produced by the semantics?” “…Oh, I did not. Thanks dad!” The party just stares on in awe. “Oh yeah, adventurers, this my son. He’s a gifted magic caster.” “Hi! My name is Ben.” As a player, the wizard could bring his Phaerimm son to an adventurer’s guildhall. “Okay, so you are Charkle the wise wizard? I look forward to-HOLY FRICK, WHAT IS THAT?!” the guild receptionist stares at the killer tube sock riding the wizard’s shoulder. The wizard is unphased, “oh, that’s my son.” “Hi! My name is Ben! Can I also register to be an adventurer?” I find it funnier that a horrific creature like this is just raised to be a normal child before learning about their species’ horrific lineage and history.

I've long wondered who'd get to bringing this into 5e first, Wizards or Dad. Unsurprised that, yet again, Dad reigns supreme.

They’re also in a trilogy called return of the archwizards, where an accidental breach in the barrier that the sharn made releases the phaerimm. Not long after, the last remaining flying city from the netheril empire makes its return from a similar imprisonment in the plane of shadow.

You said that none of the originals are likely "alive", but with their arcane knowledge a lich or two wouldn't be surprising. I could see a thosands of years old lich leading their society

I wish you included mention of Karusus' Folly when covering the literal fall of the Netherese cities. He created a 14th level spell involving Gold Dragon eggs and tarasque bile as components in a spell that took nine months to cast where he literally stole divinity from the Goddess of magic causing magic to fluctuate and destroy almost every floating city. It was the event that caused the Gods of the Forgotten Realms to restrict magic.

It's always funny to me how few people know of the existence of these creatures and how much scarier they are than the illithid. I used one as the BBEG in a campaign. It was nasty. Party started off opening a portal to a dungeon and this thing just casually floats out past them like it was waiting. Protection spells go up, party tries to do something, it just laughs and keeps going. It treated them like they were nothing to it.

I remember you mentioning that Pale Night was able to teleport out of a demon meeting in spite of teleportation wards being placed on the area. Maybe Pale Night is the only one who can bypass the Phaerrim's prison. Who knows if these proud worms would be cool with serving a demon in exchange for escape, but they're getting desperate...

The sucking all magical energy out of the environment until everything around them becomes a lifeless desert heavily reminds me of Dark Sun and the Defiler Wizards on Athas. I feel like I could do something with that....

There was a pretty cool seies of novels by Troy Denning (iirc) about a massive war when the sharn wall broke and the Phaerimm swarmed out. Elminster, the Choosen, the elves of Evereska plus more all got smashed pretty hard.

Having their venom randomly cause the paralyzed victims to float is a fantastic detail, actually; it's inexplicable, but sells the arcane nature of the creatures and sounds SUPER creepy to boot.

This reminds that even if 5e "watered down" some monsters; their abilities, spellcasting, spell resistance (sorry; its an opinion), I really wish they had tackled Shades. I'm not even sure what they would qualify as, since there aren't "neutral Outsiders", and they are neither Fiends, nor Celestials, and I don't think player-favoring 5e would let them keep shadow stepping, stealth, that level of casting, and more all in one monster entry, but I just want to know what happened to the rest of them, after Thulanthar fell? Did they all die? Did they flee to Shadowfell? Dip into the Underdark? Were there kingdom-sponsored pogroms to hunt them down, since they were all evil, in ways similar to a kind King Elessar still having Orcs basically hunted to extinction? Despite some mechanical complaints, I typically really like 5e, but one gripe I frequently have is that it's Forgotten Realms; the "all filled in" setting, but after 4e had to mostly getv et-conned out, and WotC kindly stopped burying us in questionable-quality splatbooks, it feels tattered? Some is, I'm sure, to leave room for DMs to insert their own content, or to leave room for Wizards' next "region spotlight" campaign, but I just wish more stuff had stayed filled in, over the 110 years since 3rd. I remember having to hunt for simply who is the current ruler of Cormyr? It's not on the Sword Coast, so it hasn't been spotlighted, yet, and novels in FRCS are much rarer, now, with FR being "central D&D", so it's spotty. I wish I knew what happened to the Shades, and how many survived the loss of their flying city?

Heck, what happened to their army? They dragged a bunch of disparated isolationist magic-fearing desert people to war in a temperate forest and caused the rest back home to unionize.

For an Elder Phaerimm the CR 15 statblock from Minsc and Boo's Journal of Villainy works nicely, while for a Juvenile Phaerimm there is the statblock in Ezmeralda's Encyclopedia of Evil works well for their young. I hope we get an official statblock for them in the upcoming Forgotten Realm's sourcebooks so we can use them in Adventure's League, I've been primed for them ever since the cameo in the museum in Rime of the Frostmaiden, which also included the 5e update for the Tomb Tappers introduced alongside them

I didnt know this guys, but theyre lore sounds pretty interesting and the fact that this dudes can make a scary fight for mages and melees alike, i can see a plot hook being persons and monsters missing, a desert being bigger and bigger, people think is a God curse or maybe other type of monster, the party go and find one of this sending charmed persons and monsters to the other side, or even this dude being a "good guy" that this contracts to send people to the other side and the party mission is discover the lies, or even the party searching a hydra, awakening it and maybe finally making a contact attemp of the locked and released ones
