This movie was Jim Henson's masterwork. The movie of his career. He poured everything into it. Massive budget, unprecedented groundbreaking puppetry, outstanding art production and design. And a wonderful soundtrack. And when it was all finished he held a private screening with the studio executives. The execs all watched in stone-faced silence throughout the entire movie, and when it was over, they all silently got up and walked out of the theater without saying a word to Jim. They were all thinking, "we just poured a TON of money into this, and it's not going to sell." They were right. It was a box office failure, lost the studio money, and didn't recoup costs adequately. Audiences stayed away from the movie because it was supposed to be a "kids show" from "they guy who does Kermit and Miss Piggy." And everyone was upset about how terrifying it was for little children (and let's face it, it was the stuff to give a six year old 80s kid nightmares). The show was a disaster. Only decades later has it found its place as a cult classic, and a true masterpiece, and gotten the recognition it deserves. In this, it shares similarities with Walt Disney's Fantasia - the movie Walt really wanted to make as an artist - but which was never appreciated in its own time. It's a real pity that Jim Henson never lived to see his favorite film finds its audience.
@neilladriaansen8 жыл бұрын
Are you sure about that? I just did some checking on the Wikipedia page of both the movie and Jim Henson himself, and it shows the movie actually did quite well. Despite a mixed response upon it's original release, It made $40,577,001 in its box office run (budget was around $15,000,000) managing to turn a profit and the film became the 16th highest-grossing film of 1982 within North America. While it's reception was anything but stellar, I wouldn't call it a disaster. That honor goes to Labyrinth. That movie was a box office disaster, By the end of its run in U.S cinemas the film had grossed $12,729,917, just over half of its $25 million budget.

this movie to me felt it was as if they took cameras thru a portal to another dimension and filmed the story of the beings there. It truly feels as if this is a legend that we got to view happening in its time. Thats what i love so much about fantasy worlds, and i think this is one of the most exquisite fantasy worlds ever shown. I dont even want to say "created" because its more like it was channeled. And I think this is in part due to brian froud, the conceptual designer for both this movie and labyrinth, who has shown us the faery world so vividly. These are beings that exist whose story was brought to life in our world. Also this music is incredible

Another world. Another time. In the age of wonder. A thousand years ago this land was green and good. Until the crystal cracked. A single piece was lost. A shard of the crystal. Then strife began. And two new races appeared. The cruel Skeksis. The gentle mystics. Here in the castle of the crystal, the Skeksis took control. Now the Skeksis gather in the sacred chamber where the crystal hangs above a shaft of air and fire. The Skeksis with their hard and twisted bodies, their harsh and twisted wills. For a thousand years they have ruled. Yet now there are only ten. A dying race ruled by a dying emperor imprisoned within themselves in a dying land. Today once more they gather at the crystal as the first sun climbs to its peak. For this is the way of the Skeksis. As they ravaged the land, so to they learned to draw new life from the sun. Today once more they will replenish themselves. Cheat death again. Through the power of their source, their treasure, their fate, the dark crystal.

My buddy Andres and I just saw this 3 Times on Sunday at Regal Cinemas. For the 40th Anniversary of this masterpiece from Jim Henson had to see it 3 times. Its funny each time we watched it we were seeing things in it we had not seen before. This film was hindered a little in its ortiginal showing in theaters in 1982 because of other movies being released at the same time but it in time has become a true classic eclipsing all those others released at the same time. Its funny yesterday seeing people who had not ever seen it before fall in love with it now to.

Just saw this for the first time in the Alamo Drafthouse theater. Oh my God, what an amazing experience. The worldbuilding and creature designs were awesome, the story decent, if a little basic, and this score is GOATed. The puppetry also holds up remarkably well, despite it being a movie from 40 years ago. It's a shame it didn't do as well as Jim hoped it would, and that both it and Labyrinth (which is also a pretty good movie)'s failure discouraged him from making more movies, because he clearly knew a thing or two about making them. Also saw a few kids in the theater, and they looked to be really into it as well. 10/10, would make the Crystal whole again.

This movie came out almost a decade before I was even born, and yet it has become my favourite movie of all time. Jim Henson outdid himself with this masterpiece, and I wish he would be alive for him to see it getting the recognition it surely deserves, especially with the success of the Age of Resistance Netflix series expanding the story.

This movie reminds me of women in general. Beautiful and ugly at the same time and provides the greatest art that is pleasing to the eye. It's all in the name of art!
