A female delivery driver shares her experiences of demoralizing working conditions, sexual harassment, and neglect from her company - all to get customers their food.
Having worked for over two years for a major online food ordering and delivery platform, she explains how she has experienced issues common to everyone in the industry - like low and delayed pay - but also that being a woman brings extra struggles.
She has been assaulted by a customer and often feels unsafe, but may lose money if she turns down a job in an area she doesn't want to go to. She reveals that since the pandemic, hygiene issues have run rampant, with female drivers being forced to pee and handle their periods on the side of the road.
Informer is a series where we hear the anonymised confessions and insights of people on the inside of different industries, institutions and events.

My dad was a taxi driver for over 30 years, he built his own taxi company & had a bunch of employees, but he still went working himself because he was used to it. One morning he came back home & his face was full of bruises because someone tried to rob him. Another time someone was aiming a pistol on his head while they were driving. Thank God nothing really serious ever happened to him, but the job itself is very very dangerous, especially if you work the late night shifts.

As a female delivery driver myself I can attest to almost everything she said especially the fact that it is a male dominated industry and it is often a pleasant surprise of seeing female couriers Regarding the payment unfortunately it is also true that the business often deals with payment issues to the point where you’re working more than you’re getting paid but on the other hand I enjoy working as a courier because you’re basically your own boss and decide when and where you want to work and how many hours also the fact that you get the chance to explore the city and doing you’re own thing as long as you do your job is also amazing as well It’s very bittersweet I convince myself that it is just a job that I got to work extra hard for and that it helps that the job is pretty fun Also Since working as a courier I’ve been tipping the delivery drivers everytime I can because I understand how hard the job can be so definitely appreciate the an insider is sharing the experience of millions of couriers around the world who’re dealing with the same issues 👍🏾

Throughout the last 3 years of the pandemic, I thank god for grocery delivery and takeaway drivers. I'm entirely homebound, and from all sides, the people delivering my food as well as others who judge me for using these services constantly think I am just a lazy student ordering food because they can't be bothered to go out and get it themselves - when in reality, I'm often bedbound, don't own a car and am medically not allowed to drive, and I'm too far away from anything (even with a mall and a gas station like 2kms down the road) for me to use my wheelchair to get there. I am so thankful for the entire delivery industry because you're not just helping people get a meal, often you're giving me back a tiny bit of independence or the ability to keep living.

These companies can also deactive your account at anytime for any made up reason. Like how some customers make a compliant that their food delivery was already opened, or didn't arrive at all, just so they can try to get a free meal. And because of that, some delivery drivers get caught in the crosshairs and are banned for life. It's not fair, and it still goes on today.

So even though it never harmed my ability to work, I was confident thay if they did I would have enough information required to make them pay. While this woman has experienced a lot worse than I have, food delivery is generally not a godsend. Most drivers get tricked into losing money, and it takes knowledge and diligence to avoid losing money in this industry. I saw a delivery guy confused about where to go in my apartment complex. He was on the phone with a woman who was completely screeching at him and I could hear her through the phone. The dude's GPS didn't take him to her building and the numbers on the buildings were almost impossible to see. I helped direct him to the right building, but the look on his face. Oh my god. His long face reflected the depths of human misery. He had found himself so servile as to be yelled at like a servant, especially by people living in cheap apartments. Customer service is absolute hell, but I've never worked a job where the interactions are strictly 1 on 1 like delivery drivers do. This allows people to feel more anonymous and be more abusive without other customers or employees as witnesses.

Lol meet them outside so THEY don’t have to wait? If I meet them outside it’s because I don’t want to wait. They waste so much time that your food gets cold while they’re looking for your house. If I have to chase them around my neighborhood outside to catch their car, I might as well drive and get the food myself, and on top of that they expect a tip too. I get that it’s a tough job, but remember, customers are paying higher prices for the food, then are charged extra for a service fee and another fee, and on top of that the peer pressure to tip. It’s not like they are doing all this as a favor for free, so we have to go above and beyond to thank them. If these companies are making their jobs miserable, it’s not up to the customer to compensate for that by doing extra work.

Alot of People have no idea that without the so called low pay workers society would end! I fix power lines, good look if we strike! Road sweepers, cleaners, cable workers, delivery drivers, factory workers, Maintenance workers, supermarket workers the list goes on! During Covid lockdown my 16 year old with his weekend job stocking shelves suddenly became incredibly important. When we realize our importance and stand together the impact will be far greater than anything this generation has ever seen.

I can totally sympathise with this woman for her bad experiences but as a DoorDash driver in Australia, this has not been my experience at all. Pay is fine considering how straightforward the job is and in Australia tipping is not expected for wait staff so as a driver I don’t expect tips either. It is definitely not a stable stand alone income but as a side hustle where you can choose your own hours, it is pretty good. Also because of COVID, most people want contactless delivery so you don’t have to deal with customers much anyway. And the ones I have had direct contact with have been nice and friendly. I’m curious to other Australian deliver drivers if your experience has been positive or negative?

I'm kinda late and I'm from the US and I've been dashing since 2021, and although I have encountered some nasty people here and there, the overwhelming majority have been respectful and nice. I guess it depends on location but I've personally never had any issues with people like that. most people I've brought orders to aren't crazy psychopaths, or at least I hope they aren't. some tip nothing, while others tip so much to the point where I believe I dont deserve all that money either. As for the woman in this video I would say cases like these do happen but they're really not as common as you'd expect. I know my case could be an exception but I'm not alone either. most of us have decent experiences out there

Worked pizza delivery while going to school. Delivered to some questionable areas late at night that didn't feel safe. Been threatened, been verbally abused by drunk customers. Thankfully never assaulted or robbed, but I know others who were. You're more often than not delivering to someone who had a shitty day, who's too tired to cook, they're hungry so they're grumpy and you simply exist as a target of opportunity for their frustrations. It's a demeaning job because people look at you like you're bottom rung, and it's like you basically start to internalize it. I was thankfully able to move on from that and start a career in the field that I was studying in, but it took a good year to mentally move past the delivery job.

I've been delivering for Uber eats for nearly 2 months Monday to Friday, sometimes weekend, I've had mostly good interactions, the weirdest thing that's happened to me was whilst delivering, was during the morning hours, I delivered to a man who was completely naked. In this line of work I like having a good smile, be friendly with customers and show good customer service, to hopefully get a tip. When I greeted him he didn't say a word, I handed him the food, he didn't say a word, I said goodbye have a nice day, he didn't say a word, nothing, must of been a bit embarrassed. Aside from that, most people are pretty nice and are usually happy when you arrive because you bring their food, occasionally you get the quiet types and sometimes nasty vibes, sometimes either the business or customer, or both, deem you being late for pickup, it's sad when that happens especially when you've just started your ride (logged on) and realise nobody in the area was there to pick it up. But yeah, mostly good. I enjoy it. I will say I have only seen 1 female food delivery driver and about 50 male drivers in my area.

In a free and democratic world you have to hide your identity because your company will either try to get you killed or arrested. The psychosis of these billionaires is getting worse and they're not gonna stop. We all need to quit falling for collectivist ideologies and start fighting for the rights of individual autonomy and real freedom. We sacrifice so much to people who really have no justifiable right to control any of us because they can't even help themselves from living in fear from a capitalist system that produces and manufactures it to the population. It's a damn shame how blind a population can get and how easily they can be used to attack anyone who opposes oppression. I've done every gig company and have had some interesting stories particularly doing uber. Some of what she says i can definitely agree with. The ability they have to shave hundreds every week from your pay is just a part of the job. I would have to complain about every single job cause either they short you on miles or shave your tips. At night when drive thrus are long, most restaurants won't hand deliver your food out front, you have to sit in the drive thru. Sometimes the drive thru will be full of delivery pick ups but at the front of the line is an SUV full of drunk kids who take 30 minutes ţ o get thru while the rest of the line are ready orders getting cold and losing money. Finally when you've reached the window your phone buzzes, there's a message, degrading as all hell lecturing you that they now have to go to sleep that they gave you ample time and failed to do the most basic task. Then they'll say i see that you messaged me that the line was long and in bold letters with exclamation points, THAT WAS 45 MINUTES AGO!!!, can you be any more incompetent, I don't appreciate you stringing me along with lies, the drive thru never takes this long. Hopefully you get your priorities together, people want workers who finish jobs not those who provide excuses. You failed. Better luck next time. Then your gig company pays 50% so you just made $3.50 for 1 hours work. That's minimum wage in the 70s

He'll approach them if it's really bad, the rest of the time they get away with it. Being a woman makes you a target for all-sorts. Nevermind folk coming on to you aggressively, I never get in a taxi alone in Nottingham were I live, unless I have a woman driver. Most drivers are creepy and ask things like are you married? Do you want to get married? And other creepy stuff. No wonder the women here are rock hard.

I was in a complex, knocked on a door and a man came around the corner demanding to know what I was doing. I explained I was delivering food and he just told me to put the pizzas down. I thought I was being robbed. I was 20. Turns out, I had the wrong apartment number on the ticket and he was mad about that. Instead of explaining himself he just kept demanding I put the food down. I was about to run when he finally said he would go get the money. That all being said, this company particularly sounds awful to work for.

I worked as a beverage delivery driver in Germany, overall the working conditions were quite a bit better (as we were proper employees) but what the interviewee says about people not considering the labor that goes into these sorts of services holds true regardless. That was very noticeable when it came to customers showing any sort of appreciation either verbally or as a tip (not saying I expected tips to begin with). The more 'working class' a customer seemed, the friendlier they tended to be and on average they tipped better too. The more financially well off a customer seemed, the less they tended to treat me on an eye-to-eye level, they ordered more (which meant hauling more crates, usually up several flights of stairs, for me) and tipped less, if they tipped at all.

No actual bartender or waitress wants a higher hourly wage because their wage should ideally only cover taxes on tips in America. They only make a wage from the restaurant if they made less than minimum wage for the shift. If they make wages then they won't make tips which vastly outweigh wages. Stop speaking for an industry you don't belong. Talk to your bartender instead. You will find they don't want you changing a thing.

One time he literally had a gun pointed at his head while in his car, and he just sat there and offered his credit card, because that was all he had. Fortunately they left. But this industry is horrible and not worth the $5 job.

I’ve done both Uber eats and Uber driver and thankfully have not had a terrible experience. If you are chill and respectful most of the time it’s reciprocated back, unless all your riders are completely wasted, then sometimes you just have to be understanding but still cool and collected. As a dasher I can say that training isn’t needed at all as I didn’t receive any myself and felt completely fine if you have a functioning brain. Go get food, find customer, drop off. We literally get to choose yes or no on every delivery so just avoid the sketchy neighborhoods. As far as “labour” is concerned, the mileage, store and address location and estimated completion time is displayed before you accept so… we literally sign up for it… and as far as peeing is concerned, DoorDash allows us to place ourselves of unlimited 45 min breaks at any time (other than mid delivery, duh) so just break out, drive to a gas station or food market which remained open… just critically think for half a second… I have to add that during lockdown I personally have had issues with restaurants rejecting bathroom access but to insist that you ARE “staff” is just ridiculous. We ARE and even file our taxes as Independent contractors, this isn’t an oppressive term used by the restaurant giants to smite us down. It also makes sense that they would not want to expose their employees to delivery drivers of all people mid-lockdown. The victim mentality is just appalling.

@@kevlarburrito6693 With the exception of the sexual harassment encounters, which are just blatantly horrible, every other issue they spoke of was self inflicted. You can’t dig yourself into a hole and cry “woe is me!”. For example they say that they feel that they are being “punished” for trying to feel safe because they loose their minimum pay, yea no. You loose your pay because you did not complete the service you committed yourself to. I even mentioned several methods on how all these “problems” are completely avoidable, yet you decide to make an edgy retort instead, you bulletproof wrap. People can’t expect to remain ignorant and lazy yet demand to be entitled to the empathy of others as well as the fruits of labour that they did not earn.
