I have to say, with Encanto, things went way over the line. I wasn't looking into the incest side of this myself. But I saw many young people complaining about it while discussing the wholesome content in the fandom. I decided to see what was happening in the shipping nation, and in early 2022, it was terrible, even by my standards. Everybody from every age was being paired up, and the art was often pornographic, uncensored, and untagged. So you could be looking for Bruno's art and end up seeing him sexually with a niece or nephew. Which is horrific for a kid looking for art to enjoy. Not ok.

I remember being in the Gravity Falls fandom as a middle schooler and discovering "Pinecest" and that was traumatizing. I recently went to look for Encanto fanfiction because I loved the movie & thought there would be interesting fanfiction about some of the characters and their powers but it was literally ALL incest stories, usually between Bruno and one of his nephews or nieces. I think it's important to note that many of these ships are created by kids, so adult x child ships in that case aren't half as bad as it's more like a teenager having a crush on an adult animated character and writing a fanfic about it. Also, kids (especially teens lol) often don't exactly understand age gaps and... relationships in general, as they aren't fully developed, so, you know, there is hope. I know like 10 people who were into that weird shipping and we all grew out of it eventually.

This was some time ago so I cannot tell you much details, but on Tumblr somebody had reblogged a comic fanart of a cartoon (I'm not sure what the title was). This comic detailed the hidden love between two characters and it wasn't explicit they were siblings to somebody on the outside (me). As I scrolled, I read the comic and at the end, the two were forcibly separated with a TBC. It was at that point where I realised they were siblings and this was why they were being separated However, I can only suggest perhaps a draw for these ships might be "forbidden love", the same way some people have fetishised gay pairings for being "forbidden love" back in the early days of the internet when gay ships were very much majorly demonised by those who didn't ship them (I'm generalising, but this is the vibe I get from a lot of very early gay fanfic content). I also think a lot of people fetishised early inter-racial relationships for the same reason "forbidden love". I propose that the same with how inter-racial relationships are... normal and not generally demonised, and how the LGBT+ movement has progressed within the last 20 years, peeeerhapppssss incest relationships are one of the last "forbidden love" angles that still works within the modern day?

Has me wondering if this is more popular among a younger crowd, talking about those who are just getting into adulthood now, I'm in my 30's, to me, that's young. Back when I was a kid, it was common to be watching those forbidden adult shows with the volume down low & for me, I'd keep the last button on Animal Planet, especially when I watched the stuff late at night & the kids networks weren't really playing anything my parents would expect me to be watching but they know I love animals & as long as I was watching something educational, they wouldn't grill me so hard for staying up past my bedtime. So I get that kids during the 2010's probably did something similar with staying up late, watching adult content with the volume on low, they probably had an emergency system in place for whenever their parent walks by to check in on them. Like what was pointed out, Game of Thrones is probably one of the shows of blame, I can say that Rick & Morty might of contributed as well, I worked at an after school center, I remember the 5th graders talking about latest episodes of Rick & Morty so yes, kids are watching it. There's a lot to blame here & it's just how things are, I hope if they are young, they do get the help they need & things get worked out. Unsure on where things will go from here, I worry but I hope that it does get ironed out, sometimes writing about fantasies can help people get it out of their systems but who knows what will happen?

Oh boy, incest pairing doesn't just stop at Disney. For some reason, some "fans" just adored incest pairings, especially if they aren't straight. I'm okay with any ships as long as it's legal but dang do some of them traumatised me so bad that I purposely stop using the internet for years. For example, there is this PBS show called Wld Kratts which featured two brothers rescuing animals and well... some fans ship the brothers and it has become one of my childhood trauma. No joke, I was so traumatised after accidentally stumbled upon some suggestive fan art that I couldn't watch the show for a month even though I loved the show. Flowers in the Attic alone has multiple adaptations, and the Lifetime channel has taken it upon itself to adapt many books by the author. Fictional incest is writing about taboo things. The real issue is when people try to make it mainstream and part of the general conversation with zero warning. There was a big Twitter debacle with YA authors getting in trouble because they berated a young person who told them it wasn't appropriate to be openly discussing their love of GOT incest coupling in a descriptive manner because their handles were open to children and people who experienced incest abuse in real life. And those authors deserved airing out. Yes, I do read incest. But I understand that there's a time and a place to discuss such content. I can see how something like ElsAnna can work for someone IN AN AU because they spend most of the film apart and they're both interesting characters in their own right, I can understand someone going "huh, what if these two characters with their personality met in college?" and obviously translate the Frozen plot stuff to a modern world setting like idk Elsa has a younger sibling who died in a car crash while she at age 15 was driving, and Anna was emotionally neglected by her parents and isolated by them from uhhh a neighbour's kid she used to play with? In canon it doesn't work for me one bit, and even less after the second film came out. The others I don't find tolerable even in an AU because Hiro and Tadashi's story relies on Tadashi being an adult and Hiro a child, and the setting of Encanto is impossible to isolate from Bruno and Mirabel's character and dynamic. Like, adults on the internet you do you, but I'm staying out of these ships.

Incest is horrible and should never be taken to actual lengths. But it's using fictional characters, no one is being injured and no actual person is being used for them. As long as it's nothing in real life, then just let them do whatever they want. It may be gross, but as long as it stays in fiction then it's ok.

The fact that these things mentioned in the video are so common is just not ok. And it's not just Disney either And it sours the view of fanfiction and fanart too. Fanfics give an opportunity for creative fans to express their theories and play around with their favorite characters, sometimes even writing stories that would honestly fit in with their respective show, movie, book, game, etc. Sometimes, a few fanmade stories and fanart will rival the quality of the original product. It's also an opportunity for younger fans to improve skills in writing and art, kickstarting someone who dreams of a career in storytelling, art, animation, etc. into that field. However, despite those good things fan expression can provide, people just seem to use it as an outlet for gore, porn, and plenty of other truly disgusting things (For gore, I'm not talking of all creepypasta fan work, just the ones that there for the purpose of over the top violence and gore with no substance.) What's worse is that it's viewed and sometimes even written by people who are only in their early teens and are just now becoming their own people, and in most cases, it has a very negative impact on them, forming addictions to such content (speaking as someone who struggles with a porn addiction that partly stems from fanart and animation about certain magic pony cartoon). Children aren't spared from this either. Many of the fandoms with these issues involve media with young children being the target audience, so inevitably when they go to search (unsupervised) for their favorite show, character, etc., they can and do find an inappropriate picture or a gross story or a gorey animation, and since they are so young, they don't know how to handle it, and don't understand that it's wrong. They dive deeper into the content, letting it destroy their minds, seeing it as ok. Their parents (sadly) often look the other way; in their eyes, as long as it keeps the child busy and entertained, it's not a problem. in the worst of cases, those children can become victims of people -- or become the people themselves -- who enjoy these seeing terrible things...and participating in them. To summarize, fan content can be amazing. But the fact that it's been twisted into a cesspool of disgusting topics and the corruption of so many young, creative minds just...hurts. Rant over. Don't know if anyone will read this. TLDR: Fandoms can be good, but most of the people making terrible content either don't know any better, or do know what their doing and just suck.

Who is shipped is based on who looks good together or any abritary criteria. The second reason is because of the positive feedback loop. People will write an incest ship or draw incest art, it gets a lot of reviews and comments, and that inspires more people to create such material. People do it largely for the attention, which is the currency of social media. The third reason is more disturbing. Some people do deliberately create works like this to groom kids into performing unsavory acts.
