MORE ABOUT THIS CABINET
As mentioned in the video, this Whisky Cabinet is an exploration of ideas and in order to do this, sometimes the usual woodworking rules have to be broken in order to push these boundaries. I will be holding onto this piece for a while so I can see how my ideas hold up over time. But the true intention of this piece has most certainly been accomplished. I wanted a challenge and a challenge is what I got. This piece not only pushed my technical abilities, but also pushed me creatively, and personally. Something I go into a little more detail in the free review video.
At the end of the day I’m pleased with the end result but there is one mistake that still effects my overall view on this piece. But that’s not something to be deterred by. This has happened to me on many pivotal builds throughout my career and no doubt Ill eventually see this piece as what’s its intended, a true exploration of this incredible craft we call woodworking.
A couple of things to note. Yes the lights turn on when the doors open thanks to a magnetic sensor. Also, this is a whisky cabinet designed to only store 2 or 3 of your favourite bottles. It's not designed to be a storage cabinet.
A big mention and thank you has to go to Joseph Walsh who I mentioned in this video. His incredible work plays a massive inspiration in my work and continually fills me with excitement knowing that there’s a level of perfection that an individual is actually able to achieve.
Also, a big thank you has to go to my buddy Guy who provided me with the whisky for the photoshoot.
As always thank you so much for your support here on KZbin. The fact that you even watch my videos means I can continue to make more unique builds and share them with you. And if you haven’t already, please consider subscribing as this will help my videos to get pushed out to more and more people.
Now you hear me talk about Patreon a lot. It’s actually the main way that I can financially support this channel and continue to provide free videos here on KZbin. If you’re still not sure about it, then you can watch this short video which will outline all the extra content you can gain exclusive access too. / about

I’m not subscribed to your Patreon (yet) so I’ve been patiently waiting for this video for months. Let me say, the wait was worth it. It’s an amazing piece. Showing and talking about your mistakes is one of my favorite aspects of your videos. Not because you make mistakes but because you admit them, then discuss how to work around them. It’s woodworking, and you do a great job truly showing what it’s really like. As always, well done. 👍🏻

A hobbyist woodworker here...Sir you are true master! What an amazing piece of art! You have no idea how much I have waited for this video...the amount of skill and perfection is something to learn from. You inspire me just like Joseph Walsh inspired you..I have followed his works as well and I am working on a dining table that is made almost entirely of steam bent laminated curves that is are overwhelming with the amount of curves and different angles involved especially when joining together. Learning from your videos is an honour. On this cabinet itself I simply can't think of a way to make it look better, but if I may comment (and I could be absolutely wrong here) I think your videos could use more lighting. That being said, it is nothing major as this could be just me. But man is this cabinet a beauty to the eye! Thank you for sharing your experience!

That is one remarkable piece of art/furniture !!! And I can see why it took you 4 months to build. There are so many aspects of it, the legs, the cabinet, the wood choices, there are too many to list. You really pushed yourself and succeeded !!!

Nick - I relate to the topic of this video so much. I grew up in a high-end furniture/cabinet business (my dad's) and have been making things since I was a teenager. I briefly did it professionally in college but decided to go into STEM instead. So now I have the perfectionist expectations of having seen amazing world-class furniture being built and the perfectionist tendencies of a scientist...needless to say I really struggle to build things that I am happy with and always find myself abandoning projects because of mistakes and oversights. It's nice to hear a professional talk about going through the same mental gymnastics, I don't think it gets covered enough (speaking of KZbin videos that I wish were made more!). Always love your work and videos.

I am not a woodworker. I paint. The process for all artists is to challenge yourself. For you, an artist like you, the bar has risen very high. Don't question yourself or your motivations. Your creations are nonpareil. I have cried from joy over some of your creations. Yep, I am a dork, but beauty should bring one to tears.

21:46, where you talk about mistakes.. One of the best pieces of advice/ philosophy of making that I learned at Art School from my Painting teacher, the late Bob Millis, was 'Don't be precious about your work, remember the sage words of Bob Ross, there are no mistakes, just happy little accidents'. It took me quite a few years and many a Guitar build that ended up either learning to fly or residing in the corner of shame for me to fully grasp the meaning. But I reckon you have come to the realisation that those mistakes are what makes you a better maker.

I applaud you in your dedication and uniqueness. As much as I enjoy making unusual and out of the box ideas, I’m too scatterbrained to spend that much time on one product and would lose interest and inspiration as soon as another idea came to mind. But that piece is priceless and your focus is unparalleled.

Have to comment on an aspect of this video build -- specifically the accompanying narrative -- that is uncomfortable: whining. The statement may have passed without much notice, but it stood out starkly to me. As someone who understood immediately what you were talking about at the absolute deepest level of my being, I have to say to you that we, as a species, need to do more "whining." It is your apology for it that is the _problem_, not the "whining" itself. As humans, we have been forged to believe that admitting to mistakes, imperfections and weaknesses is taboo ... wrong ... weak. And this leads to an apology for whining. I am fighting this as well, and I am grateful at a level I believe you know for your putting it out there to hundreds of thousands of people. Eventually, together, we will turn the "wrongful" tide.

Taking that effort for elaborate beauty has so much purpose and meaning and I hope we go back towards it instead of the efficient and practical that has been ruling for so long now. I had a custom woodworking shop for 25 years. While I enjoyed the things I took as commissions, nothing compares to today where for the last 4 years I only make what I want when I want. Being retired is the ultimate freedom for a maker. No deadlines, no changes in the middle of a build, no stress and most of all - no clients! Lol

That first pour after completion must've had a full body of relief, a sharp yet not lingering acidic attack of "phew took long enough" counterbalanced with hard earned satisfaction undernotes, a sweet sweet aftertaste of victory covering that little smokiness of "ok, what's next?". Cheers !

It's a true masterpiece of craftmanship, it really is! But if criticism is allowed: I don't get the design idea behind this cabinet. What's the purpose of the curved part besides beeing there as and end in itself? It's like a wooden alien that doesn't belong there, way too prominent and intrusive, but without a real function. Makes the whole cabinet look kind of misplaced. Sorry for the criticism, only my first thoughts when I saw it.
