Hey everyone! The original draft for this video was over 40+ mins and gave a more rounded view of the industry, however after falling for a few supplement scams myself growing up, I decided to scope the video down as we are seeing the same problems occurring again and again. Ill likely do another video in the future because there are a few positive sides to the industry; there are some companies who are genuinely doing their best, some reliable supplements that have a positive (but small) effect and it has funded a lot of the fitness industry. Not to mention the placebo effect has its place. I personally use; protein powders, creatine, omega 3, a multi vitamin and caffeine regularly with a well formulated pre every now and again, this may help get that last 5% or so when it comes to nutritional success for body composition and is NOT necessary. While there are plenty of good brands out there, for those wandering I usually end up buying MyProtein and optimum nutrition products. I strongly recommend you use the resource; examine.com for researching supplements and then make sure the company uses third party testing. As always thanks for watching. 😄 Free guides: transform.brettjosh.com/josh-brett-links Follow Me for Extra Content: 📸Instagram: joshuwab_ - instagram.com/joshuwab_/ 🐔Twitter: Brettaljeni - twitter.com/Brettaljeni

The only difference is the fish knows it needs water to survive. The people buying these products, gym wear, gear, etc have no idea how bad they need mindfulness/awareness. No, promoting supplements is fine. What's not fine is making supplements with proprietary blends that hide the contents and promoting them as shortcuts. Real world has bills, bills need to be paid. I have no problems with an influencer marketing their supplement to make money, provided they are honest and push the importance of diet/sleep/exercise before their supplement.
@382u3uuej2 жыл бұрын
@@Redditor6079 well arguing that it's ok because it makes money is not a good point to make, if fitness influencers want money they could sell programs, their coaching services or just take the ad revenue from their videos. Other than protein and creatine I see the vast majority of supplements as not worth the money, maybe there are some supplements out there that are useful like Ashwagandha but the vast majority of supplements being sold by influencers are things which are both overpriced and that you don't need. It also makes you lose credibility to sell worthless supplements, if I saw a fitness youtuber selling those things I wouldn't take his advice seriously since it's dishonest to suggest you need something like a 30 dollar pre-workout(any honest person would tell you to save your money and just drink coffe or buy the important ingredients individually and save money while also getting the correct dose instead of having it underdosed).

Thanks for putting your efforts into this subject! I'm a newly-certified personal trainer, and I advocate a very limited use of supplements. I actually believe in making your own pre-workouts using knowledge of basic ingredients and effective doses. It's not very difficult to do, and you get control over what you take. Yes, you still have to learn what works. And of course, even the "basic ingredients" need to come from good sources. The sad thing is that there are quality supplements out there. But the bad players cause problems for the honest sellers. I totally agree with the "late adopter" principle. Just repeat to yourself, "it doesn't matter how good this supplement sounds, if there are no human trials, don't use it." The worst thing of all is when knowledgeable fitness experts forget this and sell something that ends up not being as promised. Ahem... Turkesterone?

Supplements are exactly that, a Supplement to a complete and nutrient dense diet. As someone who uses AAS and competed in bodybuilding, 90% of supplements will give you the slightest of improvements. For a competitive athlete with a full wallet it makes sense. For the average gym goer it's complete waste of time. Another thing missed by people is bioavailability. So many supplements are not bioavailable unless taken in MASSIVE doses. Ensure you check bioavailability of your supplements and vitamins/minerals before making any purchases. Saying that the actual supplements I recommend are. 1. Quality Whey Isolate 2.Creatine 3. NAC 4. FISH OILS
@PappyGuy Жыл бұрын
Do not supplement fish oils. Bad recomendation, look into rancidity problems with that industry. Do not supplement whey isolate. If you are taking these as supplements you're 'complete and nutrient dense' diet is not what you claim.That would include you're Essential PUFA's and AA's. Thats the most important part given they are essential and must come from diet. Either that or rephrase whey isolate as its own meal which everyone should try to prioritize whole food over powdered food if they are able to, its cheaper as well and frankly more convenient once you learn you can just bake a hunk of meat in the oven and it tastes great and lasts a couple days.

You don't need creatine and whey protein either. But to get 5g of creatine a day from diet would require eating about 2kg of meat everyday, hence why I take creatine. He didn’t know he had an underlying heart condition, and the 300-400 mg of caffeine mixed with extremely high amounts of vitamins and herbal extracts sent him to an early grave. This shit is no joke- So, thank you Josh Brett for making this video. Everyone needs to really reflect and do their research, and even then, consulting medical and nutritional professionals can certainly help.

The thumbnail is a picture of a bottle of Turkesterone but yet nothing is said in the video about it. I believe Josh is trying to warn us about the new Turk Hype and does not want to get into direct contradiction or arguments with the very youtubers that have helped support his youtube channel in the past that endorse and sell Turk supplements. We all know who they are. Josh you dont need them. Great work.

The only supplement I ever recommend gen pop to take is creatine. For athletes in specific sport circumstances the use of creatine is a no brainer, but I also recommend caffeine (if they already use it and don't get servere jitters even at low doses), beta-alanine, l-citrulline, and maybe sodium bicarbonate, and nitrate from beets if they don't get enough from food. All have good human evidence to back them up that consistently point in the direction of being ergogenic. IMO there is not enough evidence to support much else currently. Even BCAAs for me are an "on the fence" supplement because meta-analyses find either no benefit or a small-to-trival benefit. Anyway, people can spend their money how they please, but I do agree that supplement makers and "influencers" should have much more integrity and transparency in the products, the research behind them, and the safety of the product. If you choose to supplement, but supplements that are informed choice or NSF certified.

Great Video! Unfortunately the 'Conspicuous Influencers' aren't going anywhere. One thing Ive learned in life is nobody cares what you've done as long as you got rich doing it, in which case they cling to you like flies to bull dung. These Influencers are aware of that and are shameless in their approach to acquiring their filthy lucre. They know that their Influence grows exponentially with their wealth and will continue to act in the shameless manner that got them where they are, this is true of Influencers across all spectrums of interests with even religion being full of its charlatans!

The only thing I stand by is my multivitamin. After being prescribed creams for my hand eczema caused by roaccutane (eczema that got worse after the cream ‘cured’ it) I remembered reading somewhere that multivitamin might help if you’re deficient in anything. That multivitamin was the ONLY difference and kept the painful eczema at bay (slight itch occasionally) until I finished the roaccutane.

The supplement industry really pisses me off. As a younger man in the military, supplements were a way of life. Think the gym bro attitude but taken to a whole new level. Imagine all the most annoying people at your local gym, but they live and work together. Everyone was taking 20 different supplements because half the guys they knew swore by them. So much money. The local businesses took advantage of the attitude, as did the official government stores on post. It was when I went on to become a biologist that I realized how useless most of these products are, and how the manufacturers twist scientific studies and language to push sales. Half the studies they cite are stuck behind journal paywalls anyways (so unavailable to the average person, like too much of science) and the results expressed in the marketing are almost always grossly overstated and over-extrapolated. The hardest part about trying to educate people on the truth is that the truth is complicated. Science is hard to convey often times, especially when the products (claim to) target complex biochemical pathways. Your average person isn't going to understand the details of enzyme kinetics or protein synthesis; why would they? They don't need to know that stuff. But the marketing is insanely effective in convincing people these products work without the details. People won't take you at your word when you tell them something is bunk, and I don't blame them. Especially when they have an emotional attachment to the product. But it's hard to change someone's mind when the facts require an undergraduate endocrinology course worth of knowledge to understand. Make friends with a biologist or doctor so they can walk you through the details and access pay-walled studies for you. And generally for fitness supplements: if you don't need a prescription for it, it probably isn't worth the money.

I was gullible growing up, believing the ads in the magazines and thinking i needed those supplements, hell i remember having a chart of supplements that went from most effective to least... price cost for each as well. now that im 37 and train everyday, I know the BS when i see them now. I cant believe i used to literally think that the supplement the model was promoting was the actual thing that got them their shape XD.

Great video. My only criticism is that cocoa powder can actually be used as a supplement. Cocoa contains epicatechin, a natural myostatin inhibitor. Consuming 50g per day is the recommended dose. Pairing it with creatine and protein makes for a pretty powerful shake. But like you said in the video, supplements account for a very small part of what actually creates results
