Who knew that getting engaged would cause family drama. It's hit me out of nowhere. I'm an event planner for my job but this has been the hardest event by far I have managed, the time needed, the cost, the emotional stress. I thought being engaged was supposed to be this wonderful magical time and hopefully it is for the majority but this video was so needed for me. I'm glad I'm not alone in all this... Its mad how lonely this process has made me feel from my family. I cannot wait to just be married and have it all behind us... Elopement is so underrated hahaha. Thank Jamie ❤️

I'm getting married in less than two weeks. Although I'm not happy this happened to you all, I'm glad I'm not alone. Unnecessary and unrelated drama to the wedding or bride and groom, but some people will make it about us.

It really does make people crazy and everybody seems to have a comment about everything. Family drama and expectations have made us feel really lonely in this process and I wish we had just eloped. The wedding planning “experience” wasn’t at all what I pictured. My closest friends live far away and we’re skipping all the milestones before the event out of respect for everyone’s availability and realistic expectations, so it just feels a little sad, honestly. If we would have just eloped, at least missing all of the fun activities would have been deliberate/intentional. I’m just glad I have my fiancé, the one part of this I am 100% certain is the right choice!

I wish we just ran away and eloped…it is so frustrating. People want to invite people I don’t want to invite because they cause trouble. People say they will help and do things but when it comes down to it they won’t want to do the work. They want to tell you what to do but not pay for it. I wished I just eloped and saved all the money and stress. You have to work then work on the wedding after work. I just want my life back.

Just cancel the whole shebang and get married without any guests. 🤷‍♂️ We did and it was stressfree, very cheap and really nice for both of us. If you should ever regret that and feel the urge to throw a huge party, you can still do it any time! 😉

My family and friends keep thinking that my wedding is going to a rustic, shindig, family reunion... like most of our family events are. But I keep having to share my pinterest board with them because when I say elegant, formal, evening ceremony with a plated meal and a band... they still don't understand 🤣. God love them!

I lost a BFF of almost 20yrs. The crack in our friendship started during the planning of my diy wedding. She was helping me with every single detail/decision. She even made my multi-tiered wedding cake (gorgeous/delicious)!! I didn’t realize how jealous she was of me getting married, and I certainly didn’t realize that she coveted my fiancé/husband until the crack became a chasm a few years later. Sadly, she never married. We are civil when our paths occasionally cross, but we are definitely not friends any longer!

My wedding was last week and God knows I NEEDED this video. Wedding planning was smooth but somehow, drama still found it’s way to my wedding weekend. I feel seen and validated now. I had an unplugged ceremony (I made this known in advanced). I was blamed for people not being able to take any pictures at the ceremony location. I’m sorry, it’s my wedding not their wedding. And I threw a wedding NOT a photoshoot! Plus what pictures could my guests have possible taken that are better than the pictures the professional photographer took?

I really wish I watched this video when I got engaged almost two years ago. I kept an "everything is fine" attitude during COVID and lots of burgeoning family drama until the day I had to cancel my wedding due to the Delta variant, and then the floodgates of sh*t were unleashed. I found myself in the deepest depression I haven't felt since I was a teenager and I felt I couldn't rely on anyone for support because I didn't want to be to source of more drama. Luckily I was able to afford a therapist and nurse psychiatrist who could prescribe prozac. I don't know what would have happened if I didn't have access to those resources when I needed them. It's so so sooooo important to take care of yourself psychologically while planning a wedding, I wish I knew this before. I always thought I was supposed to be happy every moment of wedding planning and instead it was the opposite, which also felt very confusing. I thought something was wrong with me and it wasn't. I was just in a really messed up situation and once it was over I felt so much relief.

I think some drama would be avoided if some brides did not have unrealistic expectations of other people in their lives. They also have to realize while it is their special day other people's lives cannot revolve around their wedding. I think some people tend to check out because it becomes too much and starts taking over way too much of their life. This can particularly true with DIY brides who want their bridal party to basically serve in the place of professionals.

A few expectations have been expressed to me which frustrated me or I feel like I'm letting people down not choosing to have certain things that family expected me to do and I say me as my partner has done nothing and we're 2.5 months away! Can I also say my expectations of people responding to invites was higher than reality I'm so glad I didn't spend £100s on printed invites cause 50% have not bothered to fill in my online rsvp! I don't know if it's manners, being out of practice with knowing what to do with wedding invites I don't know why it's so hard for people to understand the importance of filling it in and I end up being messaged back instead, frustrating!

I have 3 cousins that are like sisters to me. We grew up inseparable. I was in 2 of their weddings. I asked the one I'm closest to if she had bridesmaids at her wedding because I really couldn't remember. I remember that none of us were in her wedding and it never bothered me. She said in hindsight she should never have done that. 2 of the 3 friends she had stand up with her have been long gone out of her life. She explained that one of them had told her how her family was in her wedding and ruined it with drama so she thought her family would not respect her wishes as much as friends. Being a bride can make you think in ways you wouldn't normally. Her thought process didn't make sense. She used family to help out with the wedding, and the least bit of drama came from family. We had all been in the other 2 sister's weddings and there was zero drama. I think she was in a weird place with her older sister and didn't want to ask 2 of us and not her. She admitted that she really regretted that decision.

You do you girl (is what the other KZbinr I watch called Lauren from Bluebird Creative would say in your case). And don't worry about anyone else. I think us to-be brides put way to much pressure on ourselves to conform to other people's expectations... And we really don't need to! I'm only recently engaged but me and SO will be doing lots of kinda questionable things that not all of our guests will agree with, but we love what we wana do so we don't mind about not following the "norm". It doesn't help that SO is British India and I am white British and a quarter Irish too... Do what we are doing is taking traditions from each side that we like and doing a mix of those and leaving the other traditions that we don't want well out of our celebrations. It is important to reflect the two of you as a couple we think, regardless of what anyone else says. Good luck to you for your special day, it sounds like it's gunna be great and super memorable ❤️

You make a lot of wonderful content but I will say this is the most helpful video of yours I have ever watched. I am so immensely grateful I have friends who understand how laidback I am and don't have family that will cause /too/ much drama. But I know myself and know that I will be tired and overstimulated on my wedding day, and therefore will be irritable. Because of that, I have had a nagging feeling of apprehension that I'll end up not being nearly as happy on my wedding day as I want because everyone will see my irritability and get defensive/upset and silently ridicule me for being dramatic and turning into a bridezilla. Just the thought of that has made me dread a day on which I want to feel elated and peaceful. Hearing you affirm that the subconscious turmoil of differing expectations and values is just dumped onto the bride, essentially turning her into a scapegoat, is so liberating. Again, a lot of my loved ones are understanding but my fiance and I come from different cultures and even within my own family there is such noticeable difference among generations. So thank you very much for putting this into words. I will absolutely check Kara out, thank you for making an entire video on this.

Really needed this video!! More than you’ll know! MIL was worried about a lot of things and I’m glad there’s finally a video to help with communicating what I want our elopement to be. Thanks for the help! I just sent her an email so hopefully that helps ease her anxieties and I can get some of her opinions on some things.

You are amazing 🤩- this video really helped me stay grounded and is such a relief as my mental health has deteriorated from all the drama caused by controlling in laws all while fiancé tried to stop me setting boundaries! After I kicked up a huge fuss I think he gets it now, but we as a couple are still recovering... I just wish it never had to get so explosive as now there’s tension between both families…I hope someone here with similar experience could reassure me this will get better with time as right now it’s really frosty and my wedding is in a month ☹️🌺🙏

I just got engaged last night, but I've been following you for years ever since I watched a video about bridesmaids, and I just thought you were so precious, you deserved a follow! 😂What great timing with this specific video, though, because it was at the top of my recommended videos this morning, and I'm so excited that I got into Kara's academy for free! I struggle with anxiety and while I am so unbelievably excited to be engaged and go through this entire process, I am absolutely certain that planning a wedding will cause me significant anxiety at times. So grateful to have access to this course!

I never in 1 million years would've thought wedding planning would have been so stressful. I was told that if I did not have boneless chicken at the wedding that this person would leave and go to a restaurant and then come back. I cannot tell you how much extreme stress this person put me through on what was supposed to be a happy time in my life. My fiancé at the time and I never had arguments. We might have a little disagreements, but we have never had a fierce argument until this person tried to control everything about my wedding and was criticizing all my choices and it just was ridiculous. Her offer to help turned into her wanting to control everything and then getting mad if I chose my own flowers dress, etc..

After six months of meeting my husband he asked me to marry him. I didn’t want an engagement ring. His mother thought the neighbors would believe he was cheap so she gave me her engagement ring. Little did I know that she asked my brand new husbandTo ask me for the ring back at the reception. I gave it back and never spoke about it again.

This video helped me to see that I was better off cancelling everything and sticking with a civil ceremony with none of my family there. None of my family bothered to call or visit when I moved away for work, so there's no point planning a party or celebration for people who act like they don't care about me. Saving the money to go snowboard the rest of the winter and someday buy a house.

I needed this…. My wedding has been filled with so much drama.. so I have stage fright and we had a budget of only $3000 so we were planning on only having 100 people at the wedding… but it has now grown over 200. Between my mother in law not listening to my list, and my mother inviting people that I didn’t want invited and didn’t tell me till 2 weeks after the invites were sent… we are having a wedding we literally can’t afford. I sacrificed having my makeup and hair done on my day because we don’t have enough money… and my bridesmaid backed out 90 days before the wedding. Now I asked another girl. She said yes but then the next day she said no… I am so extremely stressed and I’d love to elope but we already spent so much money….

My first cousin is trying to deal with her dad’s manipulative gf while planning her initiate wedding. GF originally said she was not going to go and now wants to but she is now saying she is not invited. Also, she is not letting the bride’s father contribute “her” money to the wedding. She doesn’t even work. Just a few things she has done since my first cousin got engaged at the beginning of the year. Just feel so bad for my first cousin who has waited so long to find her soulmate.

I listened to the whole video and I haven’t a clue what she’s talking about. I feel like she keeps alluding to the thing, but never addresses it. I came to this video hoping to better understand why people are so sensitive about wedding planning. My fiancée and I are in the planning stage and she seems so much more serious about it. What’s wrong with me? Im happy to help pay, pick the venue, make and send invites, arrange for catering and dj’s and photographers. Beyond that, why stress about it so much? Why am I never caring enough about the wedding?

That sounds like you’re letting your fiancé make the decisions which is wonderful, but needs to blame someone else for the stress. I’m stressed because my fiancé wants to have control, but doesn’t want to participate in doing it. 😱

I wish I stuck to my guns and just had a backyard chill wedding. My father and my in-laws demanded a large wedding. I hate it so much. Regarding my family- my mom passed away to brain cancer 6 years ago. She would be helping me plan if she was here. My father isn’t involved. He doesn’t really ever involve himself with creative things in our lives. And I have two younger sisters who aren’t interested in helping me plan so I’m left with a control freak mother in law basically dictating my wedding. I’m so over it. I wish that I never cracked and just stuck to my guns and stuck with a small personal wedding

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Sooo my partner and I are THE most chilled people - we like an easy, no-nonsense approach to everything. Yet somehow, I'm in tears over freaking flower colours and other stupid, trivial things. A couple of people are making our lives harder than expected and I get actual panic attacks when I have to deal with wedding-related stuff. I've turned into a constant mediator and feel like I'm having to take the weight of all this. I wanted to get eloped but agreed to a 'small' wedding to compromise with my other half. As terrible as it is to say, I keep praying something goes wrong and we have to restart (then I can persuade a tiny wedding) 🤣. I can't wait to marry him, but can't stand this process 😫.

I am similar, I wanted about 10 people at the wedding and it became clear that 10 people wouldn’t even cover my partner’s aunts and uncles. I seem to be still fixated on telling people how I wanted it small and it Had to be big for my fiancé’s family because I’m embarrassed about how blown up it has become. I hate that to plan this means to attempt to exercise control over it but then we brides are also told to let go of control and just enjoy & know that it’s going to go wrong and isn’t that fun and if you don’t think it’s fun, you’re a control freak. Like ok care care care but if it goes wrong don’t care, like then what’s the point of all of it? But tell me to relax and I’ll become so lax the wedding is unplanned or sloppy so let’s get judged on that. So I ignore anyone trying to “chill me out”.

Hey, can someone explain this wedding joke to me? I saw this happen in the hall near my brother's wedding reception. A female banquet manager was upset with a caterer, who had signed up for a one-person shift. She said she didn't think he could successfully do the service alone. She was sternly all, "I've told you not to sign up for shifts by yourself, I've been very clear about that, I don't know how much clearer I can get for you to listen. You need someone there to give you instructions and guide you." And then the caterer said, "You know, I'm beginning to see why you manage wedding receptions." What does his comeback mean? Whats the implied reason?

My sister married her high school sweetheart on 9th street when the woman who gave birth to us, her sperm donor, Grandma, and 2 of our sisters lived on 1st street, but they didn’t show up. My father and I drove 5 hours and were the only people on her side. My brother got married to the mother of his children and Grandma started a fight before the wedding with his fiancée and me right before the wedding because she wanted her daughter AKA the woman who gave birth to us who abused and neglected us to come and we didn’t want her there on his big day when she hadn’t talked to him in years since she made him a homeless teenager and we didn’t want her around his kids, but my 3 sisters voted to let Grandma invite her and bring her if she wanted to come in case she changed. He called me the morning of the wedding to do his fiancée’s hair and makeup and she had Pinterest expectations way beyond my skill level. It was raining and the gravel road was muddy and not great for my Beetle. And he had me sit at the sweetheart table with the two of them and their three kids instead of the table with our siblings and grandparents and I got tired of their loud comments and lies and I left. I was like best friends with the bride and her parents and grandparents were like my parents and grandparents, but I had enough. I’m trying to figure out how to have my grandparents at my wedding because they’re super racist and Grandma’s incredibly vocal about how she feels about Black people and she always makes embarrassing comments out in public and she is amazingly rude…and I am marrying a Black man. I love my grandparents and I’m their favorite grandchild and Grandma tells everyone I’m her favorite. I just don’t know how she is going to behave and we have discussed just ignoring her, but his family and friends don’t need to be around that and my family and friends don’t either…
