The way Thuy died was so tragic. She was in a car with two friends. One friend was getting married in a few days and she and the other friend driving were bridesmaids. Super random but the friend/driver is married to actor Kevin James (King of Queens). They had just left another friends house who was the maid of honor. Not only did Thuy die, but the bride to be was ejected from the car and became a quadriplegic. And there wasn't really even any time to actually process the incident as a whole, because the following week 9/11 happened.

I was literally the first Production Assistant Saban hired for the Power Rangers show in 1993. We were sequentially "laid off" on our 1 year anniversary because Saban just didn't want to give us pay increases. During that time I got to know the actors on a personal level. I was even in the episode "Happy Birthday Zack", dancing with Thuy at the very end (we flirted a lot, but kept it professional. Really nice girl too). I was lucky to get hired on the corporate side 3 months after my lay off because I knew someone in corporate. I designed the season 2 style guide, incorporated the Saban logo on the toys, and worked in the art department. I was eventually laid off in the spring of 2000. Great people, and an amazing experience working there for most of my 20's.

@@static1217 We were all around the same age more or less, so that's what made it great and easy for everyone to get along. Plus the show hadn't hit the air yet, so it was just an unknown tv production with young adults that hadn't realized their up and coming success yet. It wasn't until the 2nd season that the actors started to get a little cocky and "Hollywood", because by that time they had now realized how big the show was. As proof that I worked on the show, I secretly put a "JW" in the official licensed artwork on Lord Zedd's left calf... Because I knew at some point (in the future) I'd have to prove I worked on the show. Cheers

I met David Yost. He's a genuinely chill person. He definitely didn't deserve the abuse he had. He likely would have been the Gold Ranger is he hadn't left the show over the homophobia he faced. But of course, the producers likely didn't want him as the Gold Ranger. Also, I'm definitely aware of how underpaid the cast were. I imagine that's why a lot of them didn't return even for team-ups. That's exactly why Austin St John, Thuy Trang and Walter Jones left.

@@englishatheart interesting indeed. However I do have to disagree with you on the part where he does everything like he’s voicing anime. As an experienced anime fan and amateur voice actor myself, I can really spot a difference when a person is doing a different voice for a different character. When I hear Johnny play the black and green rangers in the first few seasons, I hear Adam. Like a chill and more human reacting voice. But when he does an anime voice, I hear Lelouch and Ichigo. The powerful and more assertive voice. The only time I can think of where he used his anime voice is in the Once a Ranger Always a Ranger special where Adam and a few other rangers return.

I used to really love Power Rangers as a kid, but knowing how much money the show made and how disrespectful and arrogant Saban and the production staff were towards the actors (And especially David Yost), I feel like Power Rangers should have suffered far more impactful and series-killing controversy for mistreating the underpaid performers and abusing them the way they were abused. Saban went to a whole lot of work to create the series, but by all standards he didn't deserve any of the profit if he wasn't willing to enrich and uplift the performers who made the show possible. Just goes to show, if they specifically want staff that aren't unionized, starve them out of options until they HAVE to accept union-protected employees. If you don't have allies and advocates, a corporation will abuse you and then demand you apologize for getting fed up with abuse.

Actors themselves aren't as noble as you might think. I worked as a background actor for a short time. SAG members will routinely double dip on their opportunities. For example, on the one hand, they get the increased pay and union benefits automatically as per their SAG agreement. On the other hand, they will magically "forget" that they are in the guild when offered an opportunity that is non union only, undercutting actors who don't have a spot in the guild and only have non union jobs available. Everyone is going to pull whatever crap that they can to get one over on the person next to them. If we're blaming the corporate executives, let's look at general human behavior and realize workers will similarly leverage every underhanded opportunity they can to profit themselves.

Fun Fact: This is not Saban's first attempt. Back in the mid 80's he produced the Americanized version of "Choudenshi Sentai Bioman" which only run with an unaired episode with Mark Dacascos as the Red Ranger. Nunez would have played Zach Taylor whom in this version would been the Green Ranger instead of Black, since the Bioman team does not have a Black Ranger character. Also, Zach, Billy, Kimberly and Trini were very different characters in this series, Billy for instance was an alethic superstar instead of the brainy one. Also, the Red Ranger was originally named Victor Lee, his name was changed at the suggestion of actor Austin St. John (his birth name is Jason Geiger, Austin is his stage name) when Saban choose to adapt Kyoru Sentai Zyuranger into Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and produced the concept pilot episode in 1992.

@Darth Desec dude you never know man. not a lot of representation when i grew up as a kid. i didn't even relate to trini as a kid even though i was asian. my favorite was the blue ranger. after success you use it as a pedestal and they even mention thuy working on another show. she had a promising career. that's fact. all the og's are still busy doing their own thing and even appearing at cons. why would she also not be a part of that if she was still alive? last year when older asians were being attacked and randomly pushed to death, the only two asian americans who i came name that raised awareness were daniel dae kim (lost, hawai five o) and olivia munn (g4, xmen). i mean how long ago was lost. i knew munn bc i watched g4 in college. mmpr was way before all that. way before social media was a thing. How many Asian celebrities in the US can you name? do you even care? emotional damage, uncle roger, wong fu, ryan hiya, michelle phan. these are all basically asians who rose to fame via youtube. to have someone who was famous before all that, from my childhood, thuy, indeed would have in fact, been a very influential Asian American woman.

Power Rangers was the first series I remember getting really excited to watch when I was in elementary school. Billy was the ranger I gravitated to the most, so it’s said to hear that David Yost was bullied throughout the series.😢 I was aware back then that oh yeah! Zack the black kid is playing the Black Ranger though, it never really occurred to me about Trini being the Yellow Ranger...though I did find it strange that she didn’t wear a skirt like the Pink Ranger; I was only 7 at the time🤔😅 I stopped watching the series after Tommy became the mentor/Black Ranger cause I thought the series had came full circle for me. I’m happy to see that it’s still doing well. Even with the 3 movies, I would still love to see them adapt the “Green with Evil” storyline for the big screen.

You heard thier voices as the rangers, but those 3 where always missing from the gang while hanging out at school or at the park. Zordon began to frequently call on Tommy, Kimberly and Billy first, promising to call the others to join them right away. Them being absent began to happen every episode. I began to wonder while they where not all coming at once to the command center like before. It all felt so strange. And if you did see the 3, it was always a view from behind as they talked to Zordon or far from a distance. Now it all makes sense.

Yeah, it was pretty sad that the tensions between Saban and the actors playing Jason, Zach and Trini came to a head in season 2. Even as a kid, I knew something was up and I think I read something in a magazine later on about the actors leaving and the show having to use old footage, body doubles and voice sound alikes to stand in until new actors could be brought in to replace them. Once Austin St. John, Walter Jones and Thuy Trang left, part of me left with them. I remember once season 3 started I watched two episodes and then stopped watching MMPR all to together because the show had changed too much. I am glad that Austin St. John did come back for Power Rangers: Zeo, Turbo: A Power Rangers movie, and his guest spots in Power Rangers: Wild Force and Power Rangers: Beast Morphers. Walter Jones later came back to voice the various monsters of the day in the later seasons as well. Originally the Turbo movie was going to have the original MMPR characters before script changes eliminated all but Jason and Kimberly as characters. Walter Jones even said he would only work on the movie if it was SAG supported since he had gotten his SAG card prior to the cameras rolling, and Saban still refused to unionize the cast. David Yost quitting during Zeo, due the bullying meant that Billy was cut out of the script as well.

Didn’t even realize til recently that the guy that played the black ranger was missing a finger, he hid it well on the show. Also RIP Thuy Trang

I watched this series on FOX Kids back in the day and really dug the theme song. However, the company behind the hit series should've done better by its original cast. You can't just treat your crew any kind of way.

In 1993 I was 5 years old, I remember when Fox aired the shows first promo. After watching the promo I remember feeling like this looks awesome and was excited for the first episode to air. I saw the first episode on August 28th and I remember feeling like my life/pop culture has changed within only the first episode. I am thankful to have witnessed such a phenomenon. I used to be picked up at school and rushed home just to catch the Power Rangers at 2:30pm on fox kids. It was the best half an hour any kid could ask for. My favorite ranger was the Green Ranger. The theme song was epic at the time, listening to the theme song still gives me nostalgia. It's Morphing Time!

We always hear about stuff behind the scenes on shows that we never knew about. Hope everything is well with them. Rest in peace to Thuy.

Power Rangers was mine and my siblings show. All day it was Power Rangers. Billy the blue Ranger was my favorite. Which breaks my heart knowing that David was harassed point of having a nervous breakdown. I hope David is okay now.

Came here after the news about Jason David Frank aka Tommy Oliver/Green Ranger/White Ranger. I know it was derived from Japan's Super Sentai but Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was a big part of my childhood. RIP Jason David Frank

For what it's worth this series will always hold up, yeah it may be cheesy, over the top, etc, BUT no one can doubt the impact it has in pop culture. Edit: now we've lost Jason David Frank in 2022, smh......
