Always carry treats when your dog is loose. Practise "come" and pay(reinforce) your dog every time.. My Cavaliers come when called 95% of the time which is as good as it gets for any dog. . Forget it if they are chasing a rabbit...ears are "off". The first thing I teach a new puppy is "trade". (and come) If he has something in his mouth that is not good I trade him for something better. Just hold a tiny piece of a favourite food under the nose and say "trade". My girl walked in with full cheeks and 2 little bird feet sticking out of her mouth. I said trade and she spit out the bird unharmed for a piece of kibble. She did it so fast I couldn't stop laughing.

You described my Orpheus perfectly. Except my dog doesn't destroy the house that much. But those eyes...His silky fur. I can't be mad at this cuteness. You must have a heart of stone to train and raise this dog perfectly. And yes, without training, any dog becomes capricious and destructive.

@@TrickStarz Factually speaking, they are the dogs with the most severe healthproblems. Usually the back of the head needs to be removed to let the brain have some room because the skull is too small for the brain and blocks the spine. The dog will constantly scratch their ears and that's a sign of headache. It can be severe enough for the dog to stop walking, cry out in pain, etc. I mean, sure, they are lovely, but if you want a dog that doesn't have aortic problems and experiences horrible headaches...get a healthier breed.

Until do do things like my pup who will pretend to go out and use the bathroom just to get a treat. She does the crouch and everything but also gives me the "Im doing doing something wrong" look which gives her away. But absolutely trainable. She knows at least a dozen tricks (both verbally and hand gestures) and I was able to teach each one in less than 5 minutes. She also has only gone batthroom in the house once in 8 years, and that was the day we got her as a puppy.

Could the scratching the door be separation anxiety? There's a video by Cesar Millan on how to properly train. Also, could the eating leaves and rock indicate that their food is lacking some essential nutrients they need? Might be worth checking with the vet.

CRATE TRAINING! No dog should be left alone in the house except in a crate until the dog is thoroughly reliable. Begin by taking your new dog out every hour, then every two hours, then no more than every three hours if at all possible. If you are gone at work for a full day, get a yard or use a doggy day care. The dog should NEVER BE ALLOWED to pee indoors or chew furniture, ever. Once a dog has peed on a spot it is almost impossible to remove the smell completely, and it will encourage the dog to go there again . Put the crate next to your chair or bed, so the dog can hear, smell, and see you, and not feel isolated from you. Pick a spot outdoors and take the dog there every time you go out, until the dog is used to going there. This will help the dog become well housebroken.

I am surprised you didn't talk about the health of this breed. The health should be nr 1, when talking about the dark truth about cavaliers. This breed is susceptible to numerous inherited disorders - which either are unique to CKCSs or are more common in them than most other breeds. The health is very serious topic and should be considered when getting a cav puppy. People really need to choose an excellent breeder who health tests the parents (the breeders should even do MRIs to the parents). It is not enough if you don't get a puppy from a store and you find a breeder, you definitely have to find the right breeder very carefully. (also, under no condition should you ever get a puppy whatever breed from a pet store anyway - those puppies come from horrible puppy mills). So I am going to give you some examples of the severity of the cavalier health. For example, Chiari-like malformation (CM = the skull is too small for the brain, in short) and Syringomelia (SM) can cause severe pain and other neurological disorders. Researchers estimate that more than 95% of cavaliers have CM and over 50% may have SM. SM and CM usually causes sensitive neck area and a lot of scratching and can only be diagnosed with an MRI (which is very expensive) - so these diseases are often let undiagnosed or misdiagnosed (aka allergies). A lot of cav people have not heard about CM and SM. Heart mitral valve disease (MVD) is the leading cause of death of cavalier King Charles spaniels throughout the world. Cavs can also have PSOM aka glue ear which has been reported almost exclusively in cavaliers - it can cause moderate to severe pain in the head and neck area, itchy ears etc - and also hearing loss! They can also have luxating patella (20% of cavaliers can have this) My cavalier was quite young when he was diagnosed with CM and PSOM, he also has eye problems - eyelids roll inwards, the tear ducts are blocked and his eyes are so big that his eyelids don't close properly. Cavaliers can actually have many severe genetic diseases afflicting the eye. cavalierhealth.org/genetics.htm

I think his videos are so sweet and light hearted and coming from an “honest” “real” place. I’m sure the viewers will look to experts and vets when actually purchasing any fur baby. Since these appear to be his first Cavi’s he hasn’t had the misfortune of experiencing any of these health issues but I’m sure if or when he does he will then share his experiences. But thanks for information about the breed. Def good to know.

Hi Erika, My dog lady has dry eye syndrome. I'm glad you talked about it. I've had her on medication. First I had her on drops and now she is on cyclosporine that is in the form of a gel but it's really hard to put in her eyes. I was wondering if you have any suggestions of any other medicines out there that I can ask the vet to look into. Some days her eyes are so red, I can't imagine how bad she must be feeling. She never shows it because she's always happy but that's not good enough for me. I don't want her to hurt. Any help would be great.

So my Cavalier Bindi is 5 years old. Issue #1: She will eat anything, but not non-food items. She eats all matters of food! Blueberries. Celery. Lettuce. Apples. Cucumbers. Pomegranates. This dog, no matter that I feed her the best food money can buy (Stella & Chewy Freeze Dried Raw Patties) she is always begging and looking for food everywhere! Issue #2: She will stay in the yard. But I also take her everywhere with me, and we usually have 2-3 good walks per day. And lots of socializing. I can literally leave the gate open and she stays in the yard. Issue #3: She has not destroyed any furniture. I attribute that to the fact that she is with me all day, and she gets exercise and socialized on a daily basis. Issue #4: She's smart. I've actually trained her to walk with me off leash. She is worst at disobeying when there are treats involved. But she also pays keen attention when I have a treat to give her. Issue #5: She is so loving with others, but she doesn't make me jealous. I know I'm the only mom and she loves me best!

If you spank a dog, he won’t know why. He’ll just wonder why you’re so stressed out. It won’t stop him from doing the bad behavior & may make it worse. If you catch them in the act of peeing/pooing inside or sniffing around, take them outside immediately. And watch them, learn their schedule. If they usually have to go potty 30 minutes after eating make sure you take them out then. Take them out when they wake up from a nap and after play too. If they go potty outside, praise praise praise to high heavens! Show your happiness and give treats! They will want to please you. PetSmart obedience class is a valuable resource too. My Cavvie has never destroyed furniture, doors, shoes or anything so each dog is different. Your boy will calm down as he ages. You have beautiful babies!

Rule number one: NEVER tear anything away from the dog it shouldn‘t be eating, you‘re showing them, that it is way to excited for their humans so it must be something awesome, so it‘s gonna go for the stuff over and over again, so you train them the wrong thing. Ignore it and just go on with your walk, that way you don‘t give the stone or poop any „importance“ so the dog will no longer be interested.

You said it! My cavvie Nellie does all those things except she is too lazy to try and escape from the backyard. It can be a suny day but if the grass is wet she immediately goes back up the outside stairs to our balcony and whines to go inside!🤣 She hates getting her 'precious' paws wet. I loved your last comment the most. Yes it breaks my heart when she runs enthusiastically across the park and gives total strangers all the tail wagging and love and affection! When I try to call her back she just ignores me!!!!! Cavvies think that every human they see is there for THEM to give lots of pats and attention. They are the most loving dogs ever. My Cavalier never ate sticks or leaves, but she did disobey us. Especially "come." She would go weirdly deaf when we wanted her to come in. Have you considered an invisible fence? It delivers a little shock if they go over it, enough to dissuade them from leaving the yard. It worked perfectly on my dog; she figured out exactly where she could go and would stop short of the exact place in the yard she couldn't cross. It will beep to warn them they're too close so it usually only takes once before they figure it out. We got to a point where we rarely even put the shock collar on her when she went out and she still wouldn't go outside the bounds of the fence. They're smart!

My male and female Cavs - Andy and Daisy both ate lots of bizarre stuff as puppies but now that they are older only Daisy age 2 continues to eat weird stuff. We also have a very solid fence - he’s right about that. Furniture, true - they are “bed makers” and will scratch before curling up to sleep. Door frames - scratched - definitely. Defiant? They definitely can be. Andy’s (age 4) attitude can be “Oh, you want me to do that? What’s in it for me?” And a “good boy” isn't going to cut it at times but a training treat (low cal) will almost always work. Andy holds a grudge and gets hurt feelings quicker than Daisy. Daisy is more independent and stand off-ish as the females of this breed can be. Andy is more demanding of attention, has separation anxiety and pouts. Daisy doesn’t like to be separated from us but shakes it off and gets over it. Blah blah blah. Sorry I got carried away there.

They really must all be the same. I have my second cavalier puppy now. She started with leaves and sticks, now she's onto the rocks. Doing exactly what her mother did. And everything has to come inside. Can't tell you how much fabric her mum ate. It's good to know what's coming up and not to freak out about stuff too much. The escaping thing does my head in though. Wow, just wow.

Not our girl! She had to sniff every offered treat and if it met her exacting standard, she’d gently take it in a ladylike fashion. My husband would get caught out giving treats (with human’s permission) to other breeds in the agility group; he didn’t expect his hand taken with treat by Labradors or Retrievers.

I agree with most points, getting mad doesn’t work, i think they only respond to kisses and baby talk. Luckily when I go out mine sleeps. I have a baby monitor for that. Lots of exercise helps.

Well, I’m not sure which planet you all got your Cav’s from because I have had 3 and none of them eat rocks/sticks, destroy my furniture, escape my back yard or scratch holes in my doors. I do have to watch them so they don’t eat poo. But that may be because the 2 I have now have had puppies in the past and they do clean up after their puppies . Is there something missing from their diets? They generally love to please. Since they are such people dogs, maybe they have separation anxiety when you leave. I have one that I can let have them run if the house. The other one I can’t trust completely so she has a nice soft bed in a kennel that she stays in . They usually are both in since they like to be together. The kennel is big enough for them both and they can move around in it . They love to cuddle and sit on my lap and I love that too. But there are times when I have to set boundaries

If your dog is eating inedible objects it is because it has an a nutritional deficiency (called pica), a behavioural problem which started in inappropriate reinforcement in puppyhood or because of anxiety. It is not a natural behaviour and can be trained out if it behavioural. CKCSs can become so attached to their humans that they suffer separation anxiety and this can in manifest in eating inappropriate objects. This is not a breed characteristic, it is there because something is wrong with the dog's diet, surroundings and - or human interaction.

A trick for when they run off, if they like pets sit down and they'll come. If they like walks, use the leash. Ours would see that and come running. Everything you said is on point.

My cav really isn't similar to yours. He only loves me and he doesn't care about other people. He isn't an escapist and we often go to the beach or the forest where he can run off-leash :) He always stays near me or sometimes even next to me, heeling. He doesn't eat crap outside. And I'm sure a lot of puppies (whatever the breed) go through the period when they scratch the doors and walls when they learn to be alone. But if you teach your dog to be alone, they stop doing this.

Only puppies eat everything on the ground on a walk - so put one of those CUTE muzzles that are shaped like yellow duck beaks. These are house dogs with supervised forays into the outdoors. They do age perfectly and so polite. But as “teenager” phase, they decide to obey commands or not. Just use treats and they’ll forget themselves. They will show love for about 2 minutes then they come back to you. You are Home to your Cavalier.

Yes! Yes! And yes! My 4 mth old Blenheim cav Evie eats so many leaves, twigs, moss, rocks, possum pop, bits of wooden planks and often tries to bring them into the house. Our fences are very secure but she has found 2 spots so far to try to dig through to the other side. And she has destroyed one of our couches - old one thank goodness. I never realised how destructive they could be. But then she looks at me with those eyes 😍.

@@2000shadesofgray you need another. She will wolf her food down if she thinks there is competition. And if she eats it really fast she might just get her nose in the new puppy’s bowl. 🤣such lovely doggies, mine just adore each other, only one bed. And they soon grow out of chewing the furniture.

The eating thing is very 'spaniel' in general. I have a cocker spaniel who, in the first year she was with us, decided that she was a snow shovel and ate so much she gave herself the beginnings of hypothermia. Likewise, I had a springer spaniel who managed to break into the garbage and eat an old lightbulb - which miraculously stayed intact until the vet removed it - a very fat sparrow chick that had fallen out of its nest, whole, no chewing, and enough rocks to fill a large rock garden. In addition to that she would eat anything that wasn't the same colour as the floor, which is not fun when you're in the park and someone has littered.

Omg you just described my Henry!!! He eats everything outside. Mulch, sticks , hunks of wood he finds, and this morning he brought in a piece of roof shingle !!! He even ate my daughter in laws rose bush! He hasn’t dug his way out YET!!! But he’s bound to soon. :( On the upside he hasn’t started eating dirt or poop!!! Yay!!! He also seems to be starving all the time, even after just eating. I swear he’d eat until he popped if I let him. I laughed when you said he showed love to others causing jealous feelings. I know exactly what you mean. Lol I can’t believe I feel jealous when he does that. Lol. But in the end I wouldn’t ever want to be without him. He wakes me ever morning with doggy kisses and hugs. Doesn’t get any better than that....but wait I think that’s so I will get up and let him out to go stick hunting! Lol 😂

i don't have all answers, but when we take her out, we play ball with her, she wants to fetch n play, that keeps her mind off the twigs and leaves. we had a beep collar, so when she would pick up anything that we disapproved of , we would beep and say, LEAVE IT! and we never leave her home alone , unless she is in her crate. and its never longer than a few hours.

The funny thing about the hunting this is that they actually were not breed to hunt. They were breed to be lap dogs and companions. So in theory they shouldn't be thinking bout that.

My girl seemed to know she was the sort of spaniel who only gives birds, small mammals a scare (flushing them out) not the bigger sort who actually chases or retrieves game. Jack Russells, in particular, persist when the squirrel is up the tree mocking them (great fun for squirrels). And she hated rain. She loved chasing bubbles - cleaner than fetching mucky balls, which she thought beneath her. However she did, aged 18m, roll in fox poo at a Companion Cavalier Club weekend, just before the showing activity. We didn’t win any prizes there!
