I don’t know, sometimes people make silly opsec mistakes, Ross Ulbricht (founder of the original Silk Road site) did something similar. AlphaBay is back up now, one of the people who was involved in the site launched it again I think, it’s not as big as it once was though, and there are more popular markets now, like Versus, maybe it will grow though.

Why you would use an old hotmail address linked to your real identity for testing your tor hidden service's password reset system? I have absolutely no idea. Either he didn't know that there were onion-only email addresses to sent, or it was too late for Tor network to witness onion mails. He should have used an onion mail to notify the new users, and incentivised them to register their email accounts in the onion network. Gmail, Outlook mail, Yahoo mail could easily track your location and content.
