The Darkest day in the arctic in Nuuk. How short is the shortest day in Nuuk, Greenland?
Lying south of the Arctic Circle, Nuuk gets really dark in the winter months, with the 21st of december, being the shortest day of them all, with almost no sunlight during the day. Making living up here especially difficult, if you are a person who needs loads of sunlight to function properly.
Luckily Nuuk is a more southern located town and luckily we never really lose the sun, its just not showing itself that much during winter.

Love the pastels in the sky. I find winter short days cozy. When I worked midnight shift for years (11pm -7:30 am) I slept 9 am - 4pm. I used a light box to start my day, make breakfast at 5 pm, process mail (1-2 hours was all I needed). The light box was very helpful to make me feel normal

We are lucky to only have the "freeze, thaw" weather when everything turns into a damn ice-skating rink! I live in a rural spot of Alaska near Palmer. We went from ice rain to 3 feet of snow to 110 mph winds that luckily our mountains blocked and now 30 below zero! Nuuk is like a little Anchorage, off the water and similar sunrise and sunset in the winter. Been a while since I visited your channel. Great content as always!

We're 55 degrees north and get around 6 hours of daylight, so we, too don't see the sun if we work typical 9-5 office jobs, also the kids in school, my son hates having to go to school in the dark and it's dark by the time he gets home, but they do try plenty of outdoor activities, however, that's really dependant on the weather. Every year I try to make sure we take vitamin supplements, and I do think about getting one of those SAD lamps as it really effects me, having not grown up here, I just can't get used to it, it's like winter hits and I just want to hibernate! But those lamps are pretty expensive here and I worry it won't do make any difference. I'd prefer to just be able to hibernate, as nature intended! Oh, and it sounded sooooo windy at the top of those stairs!

During winter most people try to spend as much time with family and friends, and also (when weather allows it) going out for snowshoeing, snowmobiling, alpine skiing etc. But winter is usually more an indoors and inactive time, so in dark times people gather, to keep spirits (read: the mind😉) high😊

What are your suggested must-have clothes (specific) for people planning to move to Greenland from a tropical country? I mean, there's a variety of winter clothes out there, but Greenland's weather is a bit extreme. So people mainly from tropical countries like me don't really have much idea what we should bring with us. I'll really appreciate it if you'll address this question.

Hello Alex! I have the opportunity to move to Fairbanks Alaska in the next couple months, and it is a little bit north in latitude from Nuuk. I see this video is about the winter, but I'm wondering what it's like to deal with arctic summers, where instead of four hours of daylight you get 23. I don't know how I will deal with that without going a little loopy, and I wonder how you deal with it. Is it easier than I probably think it is? Love your videos!
@AlexAmasaOlsen
@AlexAmasaOlsen 2 жыл бұрын
Awesome to hear Seth, hope you choose wisely in regards to moving up north! Hmm, the summers can be difficult, make sure to get blackout blinds/curtains and make sure your bedroom gets completely pitch black in the night. -Even a single beam of light/standby light bulp in my bedroom throws off my sleep, so really use some time, on making sure no light gets in the bedroom😁 As long as you can sleep at night, and dont get too exposed to bright light before bedtime, you will be fine😁 I should make a video, brightest day coming on 21st of june😊

So Nuuk is 240 KM south from the Arctic circle (I am living right on the circle here in Finland). That indeed is very south, you should get tanned. :-) Something I am surprised is that how is there even permanent ice at that south. Even here at the arctic circle we have farms... I hope you guys also get some serious snow this winter! The sun has pretty active period which confuses the weather I suppose. Some say also that Nibiru is approaching the Earth, that is the reason for these extreme weather phenomenoms we are experiencing currently.

I think it actually makes sense that there is less snow even in December🤔. If you look back in the last ice age complete North America was covered in ice as greenland today. Now from the melting there are a lot of giant lakes everywhere like the Hudson Bay. So related to Greenland, which will become warmer by the Gulf Stream, it will give Greenland a mild climate, so it will become like temperatures in west Europe and with lots of lakes on the big island. So the snow will melt and.. yes… it starts at the coast..😬

I'm so sorry for you because you can't mentally handle the Dark. Live somewhere else and please get healthy. I myself have absolutely no problem with this .I find it exhilarating. I know how to enjoy the extremes. If I have any problems it's wildlife out when it's dark but I have my transportation set for this. Move south so you won't have these issues.

Its not great, but not bad either. I think we spend about 40-50USD pr month on electricity, but we also only have LED bulbs and generally dont use THAT much electricity.
