On this day in 1964 {April 26th} Dave Clark Five's covered version of "Do You Love Me" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #53; and five weeks later on May 31st, 1964 it just missed making the Top 10 when it peaked at #11 {for 1 week} and it spent 10 weeks on the Top 100... Was track five of side one on the British quintet's debut album, 'Glad All Over'... Two other tracks from the album also made the Top 100, and both reached the Top 10; "Glad All Over" {at #6} and "Bits and Pieces" {at #4}... Sadly, three members of the DC5 have passed away; Denis Payton {1943 - 2006}, Mike Smith {1943 - 2008}, and Rick Huxley {1940 - 2013}... May all three R.I.P.

Sounds live to me. 35 years as a sound guy and pro musician...I see both guitars have cords plugged in, too. And, the backing vocals are a bit flat at times, which they would not have left in a studio recording. Just my two cents. For all the flack Dave Clark gets for "not playing drums" I have nothing but respect for a guy that was too busy producing and touring, and hired a session guy to play his parts at the busiest times, so he could mix. He played the same parts live, so I assume he wrote them as well. They were a great band, period. Not every drummer is Ginger Baker, not every guitarist is Clapton....it's the group dynamic that makes a great band....and they had it in spades....and thank God for Mike Smith. Nice guy, and IMHO one of the top 5 rock vocalists ever...

I loved these guys when I was a 12 yr old Beatlemaniac & I still do today. We'd buy these fan mags devoted to the Brit bands & learn all their girlfriends' makeup tips: put PanStick on your lips so they'd be invisible. Made your eyes look like burnt holes in a blanket. Then, one mag had a photo of a new 'bad boy' band--the Stones, of course. Theirs was the 1st album I ever bought. My descent into madness was swift & absolute. Luckily, I sobered up at 34 so I can remember (some of) this stuff.

For years I hadn't thought about the DC5 but I am glad to get to revisit them with more mature appreciation. They got the big sound, Dave bashing those drums, the sax, their style, Mike's sexy growl those infectious hooks. You can dance to their music what didn't this group have?
@normanacree1635 Жыл бұрын
It wasn't Dave 'bashing those drums'. They used studio drummers due to his lack of skills (not uncommon in those days for other artists, too). I might be wrong but this sounds like it is actually live, unlike most of their other 'live' performances.

Been always wondering about the reasons why such simple beats and chord progressions feel so much powerful and overwhelming.
@cowsongs6 жыл бұрын
Because they are not as simple as they appear. A big part of it is that they are locked tight together and hit the breaks sharp and clean. That's what gives the whole song "groove". Listen to an amateur garage band cover this song and no matter how loud they play, it will still be lifeless and without energy because it's just not locked in like a clock. Five people having the natural ability to play dead-on "together" is not as simple as it appears, even for a 3-chord song. Another part of it, I think, is the emotion they play with. It isn't just "loud". It's JOYFUL.

A terrific song by one of the great "forgotten" 60's bands. And Mike Smith had one of the most distinctive rock-and-roll voices of that era (even if the back-up vocals by the rest of the band are pretty weak in this song). Great memories. I still think comparisons with The Beatles are a bit silly -- The Fab Four will always be in a class of their own -- but DC5 had a good sound.
@normanacree1635 Жыл бұрын
One of the reasons they were 'forgotten' is because of how Clark managed all the rights to the songs, which he owned.

The DC5 went to a local New York City studio and recorded a backing track to which Mike Smith sang live. This info comes from Lenny Davidson so it's probably true.
@audiomez11 жыл бұрын
My premise (mind you only a premise) would be that there are other factors that likely enter into this variant in pitch. Its possibly more related to drop frame resolution of the video, and the producer's decision when attempting to technically reconcile & syncronize the video frames with "the" original seperate audio format or perhaps even "another audio track version for a final result. Back in the analog days, an increase in speed yielded an increase in audio pitch or "key". Been there!

While the Contours did the original release of this song, it was more in the Doo-Wop style of music. I would suggest that it was Faron's Flamingo's cover of Do You Love Me that that band was playing in the clubs of London, that was the first 'rock-n-roll' style cover of DYLM. I would suggest that the DC5 heard this version and figured they could release it as a single. Lots of rumors about how Brian Poole and the Tremeloes came to release their version of DYLM prior to the DC5. The Tremeloe version went to #1, and the DC5 were beat to the punch in London market. In America, where it really mattered though, the DC5 version helped to solidify the marketing and sound genius of the DC5 with fans in the USA. Faron's Flamingos and Brian Poole and the Tremeloes weren't even heard of during the British Invasion of America in the mid-60's. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYScfZt4gcaWptU

As I tell people, the Beatles had (I think) 17 hits in 1964. The DC5 had 7. Just to compare, Michael Jackson only had 6 in one year; the same with Elton John. They were at one time #2 in the U.S.. I was lucking enough to see Mike Smith live when he toured with his "Rock Engine". I remember one time I had two tickets but my wife had to cancel out at the last second. My co-worker said he and his wife would go with me. That surprised me because the only music I knew they went out to hear was opera and were about 20 years younger than me. At the concert I was surprised when my friend's wife got up and started dancing to Bit and Pieces. Mike actually smiled and pointed at her while singing the song. Later, on the way home, I asked her about that. She said she didn't know Mike Smith but loved the idea of some older dude performing Punk Rock music like Glad All Over and Bits and Pieces. I then told her, "That was Mike Smith - he wrote those songs". She was surprised.

The DC5 were used to playing at football clubs and bars--they knew how to sing and play hard and LOUD. You also have to give DC credit for owning and producing nearly every song they ever did (so they kept their money, not give it to a pseud-Brian Epstein type) and producing well (he knew all the technical side on tracking and what you could do with tape.) Mike's a doll, ain't he? I saw them live at the Mosque Theatre in Newark NJ. My mom was....appalled.

Don't know how true this is, but I've heard stories that when the Beatles played at Shea stadium they couldn't hear themselves from all the screaming. +doug denslowe If the "tapes" of the British TV show "Ready, Steady, Go" are ever released, you'll see how the rock bands and artists performed live, every week on Friday Nights. Dave Clark bought the entire library of this show after it was no longer produced, to keep the tapes from being "wiped". Maybe one day soon...

Answers.com -> "The turning point for the group came in December with the release of "Glad All Over." Soaring to Number One in the United Kingdom..... Two consecutive appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and several coast-to-coast tours sealed the group’s popularity in the American market, As in "Glad All Over," Clark’s pounding drum sticks were the hallmark of "Bits and Pieces," the group’s follow-up hit. At this point, the group finally decided to turn professional." pull YOUR own head out!

I do the same thing to put myself in a good mood. I was lucky enough to see Mike Smith twice when he turned the U.S. before his accident. He stil had that great voice. Did you listen to his interview he gave while on tour; it's here on youtube. Just do a search on IkGYIl5s-6I . There is also an early demo they did you might enjoy. Search youtube for nK3TdiJDgQM.

Hard to argue, though I've always liked Clark's drumming, or at least the way they recorded it

@@thecountofbasie Dave Clark did not play drums on their records.

Dave Clark did drum on the records but on some of their early ones Bobby Graham would double it.
