Great video. Was wondering if CentOS 7 support also only goes to end of 2021? I guess so. One thing I don't understand with Red Hat and never have, is why can't people have ready access to freely use it and just not use and therefore not have to pay for the support component? They shouldn't have to strip out anything. Under the GPL, shouldn't they have to do this or have they somehow gotten around what the GPL is all about? That's what really sh*ts me with these mega corps. They fully leverage the free software built by the open source community for their own purposes, then do everything they can to profit from what they build on top of it. If they want to do that they should build their entire systems from scratch.

The GPL concerns only copyright and that's why the people who compile and redistribute the product have to remove all trademarks. Red Hat has to provide the source code for free but not compiled binaries. In fact, they provide full source code to the whole distribution even though they technically wouldn't have to, because large parts of it are under non-copyleft ("open source") licenses. Red Hat and IBM are among the largest contributors to the Linux kernel, and a lot of free software programs made by Red Hat for Fedora are re-used by other distributions like Debian.

Yeah, it is. Everything that you'd do with CentOS is done pretty much the same way with Oracle Linux.

Going to rocky, debian or .... Freebsd?

Any of those could be a good choice. It really all depends on the person's or company's needs.

I think there is a higher power driving this change, which is another step towards a future in which nobody will be allowed to own a computer.

Spot on. OS/2 Warp was vastly superior to Windows, 3.1, 95 and the rest. I had no problem running it on a generic PC, ISA bus. I only (sadly) gave it up when its browser was not being maintained and would not properly display websites.

Even though Rocky Linux claims on Github that it will not be driven by corporate interest (same goal as CentOS), Rocky Linux, eventually, i believe, will meet the same fate, what happened to CentOS: "RHEL will help to establish a platform well-suited to the needs of open source developers that integrate technologies in and around the operating system". Yeah, right.. I don't like Ubuntu, but i'm going back to Ubuntu.

Yeah -- it had to be 'down the road'. It seems to be a elitist corporate move that's all around these days. Charge for professional help, fair enough - this seems to be bending to the rules...!!!
